I had been thinking of starting this thread for a while, and when someone mentioned it on the PSL thread I figured now is the time. So, does anyone have any good recommendations for TVs? I work at Target (after being unemployed since November, which is why I can't afford my tickets) and do some work in the electronics department. We have a nice chart in the store to determine best screen size based on distance and I've learned the difference between HDTV 780p and HDTV 1080p (the highest definition possible at this stage). With my employee discount, unless a super sale occurs elsewhere I'll probably be choosing from the selection there, but I'm interested in any brand information, etc... people might have. Plus we can commiserate here while we discuss... Sad to be giving up my lower end zone seats. Sad I won't get to take my daughter (she's only 3 now) to many games in "our" seats. And sad to not be called a season ticket holder. But looking forward to a big TV...
Samsung HDTVs right now are supposedly "highly rated," according to the Indian saleman with whom I've done business many times at PC Richards in Edison, NJ. Of course, someone needs to verify that before we accept it as fact, but I bought a 50" Samsung on this guy's recommendation during the holidays and I'll tell you what, this Samsung TV definitely kicks ass for the price.
For watching Broadcast tv all you need is 720p. If you want to watch blue ray go with 1080p. That being said it doesnt cost alot more to do 1080p these days and prob worth the extra $$$. I have also been told plasma is better for motion then lcd. I have a 42 720p/1080i lg lcd tv. If you get the tv and dont get sorround sound its 1/2 ass
supposedly the new vizios are just as good as the samsungs. (Samsung makes Vizio) as well if you are a cosco or BJs member they have good buys there. Or 6th ave electronics as well as buying a refurbished one online
Per my research Samsung's are the best makers of LCD HDtv's for both 1080p & 720p. Samsung also manufactures screens for the Sony Bravia. Not sure about Samsung making Vizio, but pending your needs a Vizio may get the job done too. Other good LCD brands are LG, & Sharp. As for plasma, I'm not as well read/researched, but from what I remember Pioneer's are pretty good in this area. As is Sony but like i said I did more search on the LCD market since thats what I wanted..
only get a plasma if you will primarily be watching it in a dark room with no windows, otherwise get LCD
plasmas are real nice...i dont like watching sports on lcd ive never had any problem with plasma burn besides the day of the draft..that same bar up for 8 hours stuck there for a minute but after changing to a bright channel(like the weather channel) and back it was gone
CAN'T go wrong with a Panasonic Plasma. This is the one I just bought. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage...c+65"&lp=1&type=product&cp=1&id=1215217075311
there's a whole thread about TV's in the bullshit forum...search function it. There's a lot of great info in there.
i was the one who mentioned it yo. and i already made the purchase. i got a sweet deal on a samsung lcd 52" 1080p with a samsung sound bar and wireless woofer with a built in dvd player.hooked it all up tonight and it is unreal and rocks the house. check out www.abesofmaine.com in raritan center in edison.
another recommendation for the panasonic plasma here.pioneer are supposed to be the best but are overpriced, can't go wrong with a 50" 1080p panasonic
Today I purchased an LG LCD HDTV, It's still in the box in the car but when I get it home I'll crank it up and report back.
I did this a long time ago - Bought Two Vizio 42'' TV's...... Not 1 complaint about Vizio or the LCD.... I thought plasma was being phased out - I wonder how that will effect repairs and such.... Plasma also runs real hot and uses more energy... I respect the people who still do the commute to Jersey for games but, with the family and all, I like getting stuff done in the A.M. and then comfortably watching the game on the LCD.
just bought a 52" sony bravia lcd from costco (1080p) for 1499.00. Im very happy with the product & the price.
Panasonic Plasma's are great and much cheaper than Pioneer for the quality. We've got a 42" Panasonic Plasma and a three year old 32" Samsung LCD. There seems to be a big price jump after about 52" in plasma, so I think a 52" panasonic 1080p plasma would be AWESOME.
Actually, you can't go wrong with ANY LCD Tv....I have a Vizio and an Insignia AND a Panasonic.....and you can't tell the difference between the three once you get into HD broadcasts. Don't let all the magazines fool you...these are the same types of people that tell you the difference between a .000001 THD and .00001 THD on a stereo receiver. Unless you are a trained professional sound engineer your ear can't discern the difference. Pick what you can afford in the 1080i scan range and you'll be money. Just trying to save you a couple bucks. Funny thing...if you tear these tv's apart they are the same damn chips and boards in each one. lol LCD over Plasma by the way. LCD lasts longer and is cheaper to fix/replace than plasma. The Mezz! (btw...THD is Total Harmonic Distortion...for those who are going, "what the hell??")
LCD over Plasma? Not even close. LCDs have false coloration and the gimmicks used to avoid motion problems have led to contrast and sharpness problems as well. As far as the life issue, I'd have to leave my Pioneer on for 10 hrs per day for over 16 years to kill it. Hopefully I'll have a new TV well before 16 years go by, especially with the advancement of technology. Sadly, plasmas are being killed by the big box effect. LCDs are brighter, look flashier in brightly lit stores, so the plasma technology is being abandoned. That actually makes it a great time to buy a Pioneer if interested. Panasonic has excellent plasmas, especially the new generation, but you can get a Pioneer for about 33% to 50% of what they normally cost. It's all about finding the right dealer. Almost forgot the brightness issue. While plasmas look best in a dark room, most have matte or anti-reflective screens that make them watchable in any setting. Even in a really bright room, I'll take my Pioneer over any LCD on the market.
If your not worried about space saving look into dlps I have a 62in and a 50 in they look just as good and are actually the tv you are supposed to get if u go above 50in. You can get a 50 in 1080p for under a g I'm pretty sure. Repairs are extremely easy and cheap as well only thing u need to worry about is a light bulb and possible ballast
