Jets owner Woody Johnson has been pushing for the league to consider lottery partnerships.

The Jets are about to hit the lottery and the payoff could be $1 million.

Sources told the Daily News Thursday that the Jets and New Jersey are in serious discussions about the state using the Jets logo on a scratch-off lottery game during the upcoming 2009 NFL season and that an announcement could come in the next week. The Jets, who had no comment, have also been negotiating with New York and Connecticut about similar games.

The Giants have not entered into any lottery agreement, but a team source said they "are not ruling it out." In other words, hey, you never know.

At the May 19-20 spring meetings in Fort Lauderdale, league owners voted to allow teams to enter into licensing agreements with state-sponsored lottery games as another avenue to increase revenue in tough economic times. One source estimated, based on the revenue produced by other sports teams' involvements in lottery games, that the Jets' take could be around $1 million this year.

Jets owner Woody Johnson, a member of the league's business ventures committee, has been pushing for the league to take this step, which has met with resistance in recent years. In the last few months, Johnson has been making his case to other owners with backing from the Redskins and Patriots, the two teams that have already announced lottery deals. The Skins made a deal with Virginia and the Patriots with Massachusetts.

The league is against betting on its games and is currently fighting Delaware's plans to legalize gambling on games. "The lottery is something completely different," one NFL source said. "It is not related to the outcome of games. We don't want there to be any correlation to the outcome of games and anything the team is doing. There is a significant difference between betting on the outcome of games and buying lottery tickets."

Lotteries are designed to raise money for state-funded ventures, primarily education. Presumably having scratch-off games featuring NFL team logos will increase the popularity and revenue of the games. Generally, lottery deals are done one year at a time. The Mets and Yankees each have had games in the New York state lottery with a Subway Series instant game ticket.

"We are going to implement a policy that will allow clubs to engage with their local lotteries, the state lotteries, with certain very important parameters," commissioner Roger Goodell said last week. "It would not be based on the outcome of games. This would purely be scratch off and chance games. They are not in any way connected to the outcome of our games. That is a critical feature for us. We do think it is responsive to the pressures that states are feeling right now to help meet some of those budget shortfalls. What we can do with the states and our clubs is to try to create some additional revenue. It has been effective in other sports and it is something that is a reasonable policy."

    none at all.

The Delaware issue is a different story, but this is a good business venture for teams. They will receive revenue for having their name on a lotto ticket. That isn't a bad way to make money, and give your fans the opportunity to make some money as well.

    Every team should do this.

You wanna throw away your money, that's your business.

It can only lessen the argument for PSLs in the long run, so cool.

another avenue for woody to make money. id be all for it if say the profit made would decrease the psl fee for season ticket holders. nj buffaloed the taxpayers into the lottery will go towards education. we all know how that worked out. but look on the flip side another jets ticket that will cost you money and give you nothing in return.
