The Giants, with the notable exception of Plaxico Burress, have been the more businesslike team, and have been in the background this off-season because of it. But a correlation between talking and winning has yet to be found, and some Jet trouble spots have already developed over contracts. One of our commenters, Walt Bennett, explores some of those issues here: By Walt Bennett One can only wonder what words have been spoken in Patriot camp since the hiring of Rex Ryan as HC/NYJ. Over the course of the Bill Belichick era, the organization has developed a reputation for doing its talking on the field. Not the Rex Ryan Jets, who have yet to to take the field, yet cannot stop talking. In the weeks since the draft, where the Jets made a bold move to snatch USC quarterback Mark Sanchez with the fifth overall pick, there has been a steady stream of quotes by the GM, the coaches, the future starting quarterback and the once future starting quarterback, all before the veterans even officially hit town. Speaking of veterans: Thomas Jones and now Leon Washington are both now refusing to report for non-mandatory workouts, because both want some contract security. Washington has perhaps a better case than Jones, who is only halfway through the four-year, $20 million contract he signed with the Jets after the 2007 trade with the Bears. Washington is entering the final year of his rookie contract and stands to make a relatively paltry $535,000 this year. Considering his impact to and importance in the Jets’ offensive and special teams schemes, it seems senseless not to lock him up long term at a fair price. Perhaps the Jets are reluctant to sacrifice any cap room they may feel they need to get Sanchez signed. Yes, there are guidelines and a certain “budget” the Jets must stay within with regard to rookie salaries, but certainly Sanchez will be looking for the maximum allowable amount. If the Jets enter the preseason dealing with payroll squabbles, there will be nothing but needless distraction from the essential task of building a winning organization from the ground up. Tannenbaum/Mangini were not that combination; the pressure is on to prove that Tannenbaum/Ryan are. This organization can ill afford to allow the perception that a player like Leon Washington cannot get paid, while the organization at the same time catapults an untested rookie into the starting quarterback position over Kellen Clemens, a four-year veteran who was assumed to be ready to lead this team to the postseason in his first full year at the helm. One can only imagine what will be going through the minds of the Patriots as they come into town on Sept. 20 for their first Ryan-era showdown. Tom Brady, having not lost a regular-season game since Sanchez was waiting his turn at USC, and a veteran defense against the new kid on the block and the vaunted Rex Ryan defense. One wonders what sort of reality check those Patriots will have in mind for Sanchez and company.
Normally they'd be right about the talking but after dealing with Mandoofus for 3 years, we need someone whose going to be loud and obnoxious to get this team firestarted. We'll be fine.
Not surprised at all. The NY Times doesn't even cover the local teams half the time. Their sports section is more an op-ed on random sports stories than a true local hearty sports section. Over the last few years I've seen numerous kiss ass stories on the patsies and the lakers and/or anything else that's cool in sports at that moment. Great newspaper overall but sports section is a joke. The Post, Daily News and Bergen Record have the best sports sections IMO.
i agree, the writer is very correct about there sure being alot of talk before ever doing anything but its kinda necessary at this point. i am fairly confident that bart scott was told to bring swagger with him. i am also fairly confident it will slow down at some point.

I read the NYT so fuck yalls. Not that that is an article, so it shouldn't really reflect on the Times. However, I would like to see something before I hear about it. There are signs, I'm not denying I'm excited. For Rex, for the D, for Sanchez, for legitimacy.
What is it. August 15? Its May 16th and they indicate that not signing Leon would be a mistake and the Jets are suppose give him what he wants and not negogiate. Its funny stuff. Its called playing a game. The talk part, well, I am sick on Sanchez quotes and while I think Ryan's gonna be good, the media is kissing his ass because he is entertaining. Off season is tough once the transactions/drafts are done. RB's hold out, no Wr's, QB issues, no punter, 4 new guys on defense, new coach, do depth on the OL and LB. That's us, nothing but questions. I am afraid the 13 picks in 3 years is gonna bite us in the ass
Ohhh the people in Jets land are way too happy for my liking. I much prefer them to have the SOJs philosophy that the rest of the league all know and love. Damn them for all being so positive before a ball has been thrown ! They should get back to being pessimistic , like normal. Look at saint BB in NE land , quiet as a mouse and lets his football on the field do the talking , not this endless stream of quotable funny sound bites , Damn!!! Did I say Funny???? Blogs are worth reading? Big media still has not tumbled to the fact that columns are becoming less and less valuable in the new age of information. A short less heavily edited column, which is what a blog essentially is, is probably the weakest way to attract readers while also making a coherent point. If the NY Times was being smart about the transition that is taking place they'd just set up a huge number of forums on various topics, with a format that is much easier to use than the blog thread format in favor, and then parse content created that way by the number of hits and responses it generated. They could promote contributors in a ranked system, based on the criteria above and also on general coherence and grammatical refinement, and create their alternate content line in the process. The people speak is fairly likely to be the dominant form of news and information exchange moving forward. Hiding your head in the sand and pretending that paid talking heads are going to control things in other than a moderating role is probably a bad bet at this point.

I actually love TNYP - for real. The nyuk-nyuk factor and all, the last bastion of yellow journalism. Nary a day passes when I don't almost spit out my coffee perusing the headlines at the convenience store on the way to work. Haha, I remember the Paris Hilton one where she cried in court: 'Cry Baby!
