Just curious. I'm not sure if this was already taken into account with the signings we've already made. If not, this leaves us a little more room to work with Washington and Jones. I know some of you guys don't believe Jones should be getting paid anymore than what he is. Mangold can obviously wait, he's not a RFA until next next season. Just something to BS about until we get some updates from OTA's today. What do you guys think?
When you say 'new salary cap', do you mean for 2009 or do you mean the one they haven't decided on with a new CBA?
For 2009 NFL salary cap increases $12 million over last season Associated Press NEW YORK -- NFL teams will have nearly $12 million more under the salary cap this season, the final year with one in place unless the league and its players' union can reach a new collective bargaining agreement. The cap was due to increase $7 million to $123 million this season, but additional adjustments stipulated in the current CBA will increase the total amount that teams can spend on player compensation to about $128 million. The $12 million increase is the largest in three years. The league informed teams Wednesday that a "cash-adjustment mechanism" from final accounting figures in May will give clubs $947,000 of additional salary cap room, NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said in an e-mail to The Associated Press on Friday. About $4 million in cap room had already been added earlier this year. The adjustments were triggered after spending on players fell below 59.5 percent of the league's total revenue in 2008. The adjustments, first reported by FoxSports.com, do not affect the minimum team salary of $107,748,000. Aiello said the most recent adjustment would typically carry over to next season's salary cap, but that isn't possible after NFL owners decided last year to opt out of the CBA with two years remaining. Unless a new agreement is reached, there will be no salary cap in 2010. Recently hired NFL Players Association executive director DeMaurice Smith said earlier this month that he speaks three or four times per week with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, although Aiello said Friday negotiations had not begun on an agreement. "Negotiations with the NFLPA on a new CBA have not commenced," Aiello said. "We have two more seasons to go on the current deal." The process likely won't be easy with the economy in turmoil, but Smith has said he's hopeful of reaching a deal to avoid a work stoppage for the 2011 season. NFL owners will likely discuss their strategy for negotiating a new agreement next week at the NFL Spring Meeting in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Copyright 2009 by The Associated Press
more money to work with is never a bad thing. Especially when you have two pro bowlers you want to keep.
Even with this (increased?) new-found monies, I'd be a little hesitant in giving TJ a new contract. Next year he'll be 31 years old and I would hate to extend him. Maybe a raise. No to a new contract, and an emphatic NO! on guaranteeing him the remainder of his current contract.
Yeah, I'm on board with this aswell. I think that our running game is gonna be fundamental to our offense, so I'm all about having happy RB's on the team.
I'm more curious as to what our cap space will look like next year. We should be getting some significant dead money off the book with Pennington, and maybe Coleman (not sure). There needs to be space to re-sign Mangold, also if Sheppard does really well he's due a ton of money. At some point we're going to need to find a top receiver for Dirty.
hi, everybody! maybe with new money we can get Boldin to the team. it will be very good for sanchez to throw to him.
I don't get the mentality of giving a new contract to a 30 year old non-dynamic runningback and saying that the best young center in the league can 'obviously wait'. I'd lock Mangold up for the rest of his life as soon as possible.
I never thought about it from a future cap problem. But if the new CBA they come up with does away with or greatly increases future caps, then wouldn't you want to lock in LW and NM and any longer term prospects in to whatever you can get them to agree to. Wouldn't no cap mean dramatically higher salaries next year? Pay Leon and Nick now! Plus they owe it to the little guy. Leon barely gets paid anything right now. He has a new baby on the way. Give him some moneys.
Sign Mangold to an extention, give Leon what he wants, screw TJ. Now we can make a move with Jones as part of the deal and maybe get the 2nd receiver we need. Hey Eric....want another former player??
That Part I agree with, the rest, not so much. I'd rather try Clowney as our #2 then invest anything in King Dropsie.
guys like mangold and leon have a leg to stand on with asking for an extension they are young valuable guys the jets shouldn't trade TJ, and they shouldn't give him an extension, let him hold out and it'll be up to him if he wants to flush his career down the toilet ... chances are he'll realize he doesn't have the leverage to pull it off and be back before week 1
I love that everyone here hates on TJ. I know he is getting older, but he hasn't had as many carries as other running back his age. I think he's a machine, and adds great value to this team.
The problem is that he wants a huge salary and extension. We're going to end up with a 33-year-old RB making $5 million a year.
I don't hate TJ, I just don't think it makes sense for the team to make another long-term investment at such a replaceable position. He may not have had as many carries as a lot of RBs him age, but that doesn't change his metabolism. And while he does pile up the yards, just think that if you follow examples of success around the league as far as teams go, they don't tend to hang onto RBs his age. Always stay young at that position.
Given our cap situation I figure the only way TJ gets a raise is if he is traded and his new team gives him a new contract. So I figure he will be pushing for that. I figure its goodbye TJ. As long as they have someone in there for depth in case of injuries we don't need TJ because both Greene and Leon are better. edit: I don't think we have the cap space to add the star WR everyone wants. Most of the Jet free agent signings of the last few years had front loaded contracts, it won't take too long for some cap space to develop. Until then don't expect anymore exciting additions. Since I said that it means we'll prolly get Boldin tomorrow.
Sign TJ - his birth certificate says 31 but his odometer says 29. The guy's a workhorse - been lifting weights since he was 3 years old. Not lazy. LED the AFC in rushing last year which I think he can repeat for another two or three years at least. We FINALLY have a running back who performs and you guys want to start over. Little Leon is not an everydown back - he'll be broken down before TJ if he's used as one.
TJ will get nothing from us, nada, zero, You told Coles to take hike for the same reason, the Jets have said they don't do it. Its ok to be under. We need to stop with the FA's signings and trading away or picks. They are gonna have to become fiscally respsonsible at some point so the time is now and the extra cash will help
