This guy has Johnny Mitchell written all over him. Yeah he's somewhat faster and stronger in the weight room, but they are selling the same product in a little bit nicer package. An offensive weapon who will change the way defenses play the Jets, but he needs some work on blocking ... that doesn't sound familiar?

Also, for a TE who gives a rats ass if he runs a 4.38 or 4.55, he's a friggin TE, how many fly patterns will he be running?

The clincher: He has that Johnny Mitchell cockiness and arrogance that turned into instant headcase when he got on the field in the Big Apple.

He's too much of a hype pick for me at this point, All-American or not. If we are sitting pretty next year we can go after a top notch FA TE, it will be alot cheaper (no not some lame ass like Jolley)

If the jets do indeed draft Vernon Davis I will not follow the Jets this year. He would be the worst pick possible. He is not that good and tight end is the least important starting position in the nfl.

I don't think the Jets are concerned if you follow them or not. The one thing I hope this new Jet regime have is tough skin. I'm pretty sure Belichick has told him so, because the things that I've read, heard and see, he is going to need it, if he doesn't go QB.
    QB is dumb, Dumb, DUMB
Everyone who wants QB answer this one question.
Are you willing to pay 100 million for two players watching the game?

So you'd rather have DeWayne fatboy Robertston (former top 5 pick) than Antonio Gates (Vernon Davis is compared to)??

Why would we trade with the niners. The niners know that he's not our top priority, and the only one between them and us is GB, who is all but certain to take Hawk.

The niners won't move from that spot...

Tight end is the least important position in the NFL? So tell me, how would the Giants, Chargers, Chiefs, and Falcons be doing right now if they didn't have Shockey, Gates, Gonzalez, and Crumpler?

An elite TE changes the whole dynamic of the offense. A TE plays a big role in both the running and passing game. Football is a complete team game, and every piece of the puzzle counts. Having an elite player at any position in the NFL will greatly improve your team and bring you one step closer to success.

You don't draft 'building blocks' in the top 10, you draft game changers, period. Reggie Bush, Mario Williams, and Vernon Davis are the only true 'game changers' in this draft IMHO. If Bush and Williams are gone, Davis is the no-brainer pick. Davis makes every person on the offense better, and gimps the opposing defense due to the mandatory safety help that any linebacker covering him will need. That's one less guy to double Coles, one less guy to stack the box, and one less guy to rush the passer.

At 29 we can start drafting 'building blocks'. The dropoff from Brick to Eric Winston is not a big one, but we'll save 10-15 million in signing bonus. Then, since we didn't get Williams, we can take a guy they seem to like in Gocong DE/OLB in the 2nd round, and round out day one with a DT and a C.

Would a first day of Davis, Winston, Gocong, Watson, and Eslinger really seem like a bad thing to you?

You see Winston as dropping to 29? From what I've seen thus far he's gone by the middle of the first round.

There is a good chance that either Eric Winston and/or Marcus McNeill will be there at #29. I just find it too hard to believe that 4 OT are taken in the first 28 picks especially with the amount of talent in this draft.

Sure you're not thinking of Winston Justice? He's going middle of round 1.

What's my point? You don't need a game changing TE to win superbowls. Our TE's put can contribute enough in a well balanced offense.

    Yea, nice story but....

All those are if's for next year...I can come up with a million little stories of what if's...keep in mind that Fergusson only covers one side of the line...he isn't THE line...secondly, Davis would be the ONE guy on the Jets offense that actually might spread the field and have the defense thinking...right now, I don't see our offense doing any better than the bottom 10 of the league...and that's if Martin comes back strong too...we have absolutely NO receiving threat at all...what does it matter if our QB has time if he can't even have an open target to throw to...

Everyone keeps criticizing Davis, but I for one see him becoming an instant playmaker/star in this league...the only way I'm happy if we don't draft Davis is if we get Super Mario or AJ Hawk...both will take our D into very good/elite status....

Jets would have gut to take Davis. I'd like to see it,,, though I'd really like to see AJ Hawk on the Jets ,,, however, haven't heard that once!!!!!!!!!!

    Super bowl winners

Heath Miller was a big part of Pittsburgh success on offense...awesome running game, Hines Ward and Randel El...
Daniel Graham/Jermaine Wiggins...Patriots won with Defense, a future HOF QB, and 5 good wideouts...
Ken Dilger...Tampa won with Defense and the running game...

your point still doesn't make sense to me...???? all those teams had awesome Defenses....how about you name some teams who actually used a great TE to win it...let me see....Jay Novacheck (Cowboys), Brent Jones (49ers), Shannon Sharpe (Ravens), Mark Chmura (Green Bay)...Yeah, my thoughts exactly...I don't think those teams would have won with Chris Baker and Doug Jolley, and even if they did win, it would be much much harder...

You don't pass on a playmaker like Davis when they come along because they don't come along very often!!!

How do you know that Williams doesn't fit well in a 3-4??? I guess you saw him playing in a 3-4 for a long time to make that kind of an assumption right???

point is, you take a guy like Williams or Davis because....
Williams will make our D elite for years to come with him and Vilma...and if Robertson pulls through this year, watch out...
Davis makes the offense instantly 10 times better...simple as that...he scares the opposing Defense...and as of right now, we have NOONE that scares the opposing Defense...

Except for Todd Heap and the Ravens, the rest of those teams barely missed the playoffs
And all those TE's contribute to putting up points on the score board
Teams gameplan with those TE's in mind.
Our TE's in 2005 with ten years experience between them had TWO Touchdowns
Two Damn Touchdowns from two players....
    Our TE's cannot block
There is a reason Baker has been the back-up to Becht....Please
No one knew who Jolly was until he got here, and we still don't know who he is....Another TE who cannot block
    What good are they?
And no one is saying we need a game changing TE
But we do need something on offense, and after Bush there is nothing left. We have an opportunity. You weigh all options.
There is nothing there that any Defensive Coordinator is losing sleep over. Let's stop making these guys jobs so easy....
    Let them earn their pay
    Keep em up at night
With the Offense we have now, I can see Defensive Coordinators going on vacation the week they play us. Not much to do...
