Hloti Ngata with our top draft pick! Sure, we can probably trade down a few spots and still land him. I see most mock drafts have Ngata going #7 overall to San Francisco. The reason I'd go with Ngata #1, is that he is the ONLY true NT who can be a presence in the middle of a 3-4 and be a disruptive force. Sure, D'Brickashaw Ferguson would be a fine pick at #4, but there are a host of LT's available throughout the first round. If we plan to trade Abraham, and if we trade down anyway, we could easily land a second first round pick and draft a Jonathan Scott, Winston Justice, Eric Winston or a Daryn Colledge with another first round pick. Any of them would be a starting LT for us at this point. Personally, I don't think anyone compares with Ngata for our Dline, and any of those OT's would help us. Heck, we can stick with Jones and draft a RT with the late #1 or our own #2 pick. Either way we help the Dline and the Oline. gg
I don't wanna draft anybody I can't pronounce. I have trouble enough with Sione Pouha and Austine Nwabuisi.
While it would be good to sure up the dline, we need to invest our 1st round pick on our putrid offense
Penny, the trouble with drafting a QB is that he'll get KILLED until we build an Oline. Just look at David Carr as an example of what happens when you take the QB first. Look at the Dallas Cowboys of the 1990's to see what happens when you start with the lines and then draft the QB.
Actually, Aikman was drafted first...and then they went O-line. He got absolutely hammered his rookie year.
That's always the assumption, but who says the rookie would start and who says we can't address our offensive line via the draft and Free agency? If we drafted a rookie QB (which I think we will) I would not expect him to play.
The Cowboys had some of the line pieces first, and added Aikman after. If we drafted ANYONE who didn't play this season, it would be a waste IMO. Build the lines, that's where it starts. Look at the Steelers if you don't like my Cowboy idea...
But Guy, we're two seasons away from making a run anyway. Besides, this year's draft is top-heavy on O-line. We can pick O-line in later rounds and still get quality (and even go back to addressing it next year) and still be okay. Ask yourself, when is the next time we'll have a #4? God... don't answer that... I hope it ain't for a long time. I think Penny is right, take the best available QB.
I say no to drafting a QB unless it is V. Young. He is probably the only one who would have a chance to survive behind our o-line. There are some really good FA o-linemen. Hutchinson, Bentley, and Backus (sp). Not sure how much it would cost us. But any of these three would look nice in a jets uni.
Why would it be a waste? Most if not all rookie QB's are not ready to play their first year. I don't see your logic their.
With the 4th choice in the 2006 NFL draft, the New York Jets select Jay Cutler, QB, Vanderbilt.
We already wasted a #4 overall pick on a DT a couple of years ago. What makes you think it's a good idea this time? The Jets are in rebuilding mode. Last time I checked, DT is not the way to go for a rebuilding team with the #4 overall pick.
Look guys, the problem in all these threads is how a poster views the perceived time-frame of a Jets comeback. If a guy thinks we can actually be contenders next year, then their thinking is totally different than those who know it's gonna take two years or more. I've come to the realization that we're not going to be ready next year (actually, this year. I'm saying ready by September, 2006). That's what this debate should be about even before we talk of taking a QB or not. In fact, a poster should probably declare his thinking on this before ranting about how useless it is to draft a QB behind our dismal line, so that we know where he stands and it can be discussed rationally knowing that he thinks that scenario is possible. No one is saying anybody's for taking a QB and throwing him to the wolves in September, 2006. It seems like most guys who propose taking a QB at #4 are aware that we've got a two-year rebuild job ahead of us (at least). The guys who want O-line and other positions first are probably of the opinion that a patch-job will make us contenders this year. I am not of that opinion and quite frankly, don't know how that's at all possible, given the number of positions we need to address.
I dont know who we NEED to pick, I do think however the likelyhood is increasing that AJ Hawk will be a Jet next season.
Do you understand that there is a salary cap in football. You can't just spend all your money you have on one area. That is one of the reasons why they are in all this trouble. They put so much money into the defense and not enough into the offense. If you draft that NT in the first round than thats 2 guys you drafted top 5 the past 3 years that arent what most people call "Impact guys"
I have to agree with Penny. Draft a QB, then build around him. Keep Mawae, draft Max-Jean Gilles, start Jones at LT, keep Moore at RG, sign Tom Ashworth or another FA RT. That's a pefectly fine line to have going into a rebuilding season. Everyone assumes we need to address the line through the draft, when that is not the case.
