This FO is impressive. They are doing there homework. They appear to have (correctly) concluded that trading up makes no sense. The cost is too high and the return not worth it. They have also concluded that history shows that top drafted QB bust far too often. Don't look for a QB to be drafted at pick #4. Lastly, they realize that no matter what happens at picks 1-3, a very good non-QB prospect will drop to #4 - be it Ferguson, Willliams, or Hawk (or, even with surprises, Bush or Davis). See the article below on ESPN Jets standing pat? <Apr. 21> Despite talk about the Jets possibly trying to move up from their current No. 4 slot in the first round, the team doesn't appear to have any such designs, no matter what transpires ahead of them, ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports. The team's new football operation, headed by general manager Mike Tannenbaum and coach Eric Mangini, has determined the price of doing business to move up even a slot or two is simply prohibitive. Plus the Jets feel that, no matter how the first three choices play out, they will get an excellent pick at No. 4. Furthermore, don't bet on that choice being a quarterback, no matter which of the "Big Three" passers is still on the board. The Jets' brass has done an extensive study of quarterbacks taken in the top five and found the failure rate to be fairly alarming. Some player like D'Brickashaw Ferguson, Mario Williams, Vernon Davis or A.J. Hawk is going to fall into New York's lap.
i'd really like a player like Mario Williams but then again I wouldn't mind D'Brick A.J. Hawk would be nice too.... yeah....
Jets standing pat? ARE THEY REALLY? I F-ing hate the media!! They are so clever with their little titles arent they.....We get it! Mangini wants to model the pats, get over it.
Next weekend can't come soon enough for me. The FO is doing a great job of smokescreens. We the fans are confused hourly by what the media thinks Tangini will do - imagine how much the other teams' FO are getting confused by the Jets FO!
I feel like we really can't screw up unless we draft a QB. Whether it be Mario, D-Brick, Davis, or Hawk; we will be a better team next year.
The smartest thing for us to do is stay put at #4 and take either D'Brick or Mario (whichever one is left). I'm pretty sure Tangini knows this. This is a good QB class, but it's not great IMO. I don't see Leinart, Young, or Cutler ever becomming HOF caliber players. I do see that with D'Brick and Super Mario.
I love the way everyone has just decided that we aren't going QB.. cause the media says so. News flash for everyone, noone knows what direction we are going in the first or any other pick. I gaurantee that if we don't go QB, it is because we are not sold on these QBs, it will not be because QBs have busted in the past. I still say if Leinart is available at 4, he will be the pick..
I disagree with 1st round QBs being busts. People focus to much on the Ring factor, saying "Most QB in the 1st round never get rings". Then conclude they are ringless busts. The problem is not that their bust, but that they are good. When you draft a QB that high you expect him to be a great weapon, the focus of your team, your hero. And so too much preasure is put on him, and he isn't given the help he needs. The reason why a lot of non-1st round QBs win is not becuase they are better, its the TEAM. See teams like the Steelers, Pats, Bucs, Ravens, etc. They didn't have everything riding on their QB when they won. (Pats one 3 times, so maybe they did). They played top notch Defense with a grinding run game. Even when the Pats won their first SB, Brady was just in there, new. You think anyone at the begining of that season said "It's okay, we have Brady, the best QB in the NFL, he'll carry us to a SB"? No. See if you build away from the QB, if you focus on a top defense, then a grinding run game, then you can pick up a great QB (who might not seem like it at the time, or he might seem like it at the time) and be very effective. Again, it's not that 1st rounders suck, its that everyone puts everything on them they don't improve much else where (ie. everyone is hoping to ride on the arm of Eli instead of improving that defense). Palmer, Eli, Carr, Vick, Peyton, McNair, McNabb, Pepper. All were/are the focus and face of their teams and are being counted on to save those teams. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. But they are good QBs. You wouldn't want to have one of them?
everyone wants a QB in the first round, but the article is right, it just doesnt make sense for us to take one early
You think that title is a coincidence? They take every chance to relate us to the pats. I dont really know what u think actually because not sure if ur making a statement or asking a question. If it is a question then no, the only thing it has to do with them is that Brady was taken in a late round, which isnt even mentioned here. Anyway im not a fan of taking a QB in the first unless he is one of those anomalies that u cant pass up, like how Vernon Davis is with Tight Ends. Needless to say none of the first round QB's are on that level hence a later round QB would be a fine pick up. Of course that is hit or miss aswell so i guess it comes down to a little luck.
I think what the media has mainly been speculating on is exactly what you said: that the Jets aren't sold on any of the QBs in the draft. Here's something for you to chew on. Ramsey was given permission by the Skins to talk with Tampa Bay, Cincinnati, Detroit, and Miami but chose only to visit, his choice, the Jets. He had permission to visit Detroit before they had Kitna and McCown and Miami before they got Culpepper but he wasn't interested. Joe Gibbs acknowledged in a press conference that the Jets were Patrick's pick. Why did Ramsey prefer the Jets? How useful is it for him to showcase his talents starting for a team that can't provide the supporting talent? He's already been there and done that for three of his four years in Washington. Maybe it's just a one year gig for him or maybe Patrick knows something about the Jets situation that goes beyond the obvious.
Not taking a QB because you arent sure which is the best or how good they are doesnt make a good front office, it makes an uninformed but careful one. Now, not taking a QB because you know for sure that they wont be as good as a OT, DE, or LB is a different story and hopefully the one the jets FO has...I wouldnt want to see one of these QBs become a superstar without us because or FO was timid rather than smart
