We getting Leon locked up long term or what? As a fan of the Jets, it really hurt when we lost A.Glenn, S.Moss, J-Abe and I'm already missing Coles in a way, lol, but it would kill me to see Leon play for another team.
Let?s see how he handles more snaps (that rex hopefully gives him) before we throw 4-6 million a year at a backup. No need to hurry. And I think there?s noone else important who?s contract is up, so we can still franchise him. The RB tag isn?t that expensive.
Leon has already showed what he can bring to the table, this kid is as explosive as they get and I'm not sure that Leon will ever be a #1 back who can carry the workload with 20+ carries per game but I know one thing...Leon can make plays with the best of em once he's in the open field. He's already one of the best kick returners in the game today and he can take a screen pass to the house in a matter of seconds. We dont need to wait until it's 2 late where we need to hit him with the franchise tag, as a Jets fan, Im ready to get the deal done ASAP
Leon is easily worth that money. Hes not simply a "backup". Hes a dynamic player whos incredibly valuable, not only for his running but his overall play making ability.
You absolutely right--what's the hurry? Boobway "locked up" Pennington for $64 million ($4 million MORE than the Pats gave Brady after Brady won 2 super bowls) because we supposedly needed to hurry up. Throwing a big contract now at a RB/KR would be insane as Leon could tear up a knee in a exhibition game like Sehorn. Sehorn was never the same after tearing up his knee returning a kick against the jets in preseason.
He's worth 4 mil on his kick returning alone. Throw in screen passes it makes him worth 5. If he can handle a heavier rushing load, possibly 7 mil/year.
i'm not missing John Abraham... why would I want the headcase who gets hurt during playoff time every year when I have a 12 year Center who is probably going to make another pro bowl after his 1st this past February?
Leon will get 5 mil+ because he is the most dynamic player on the offensive side of the ball, plus he's a pro bowler. Not to mention a team MVP. To protect against injury don't guarantee a lot of the money in the contract.
Well it looks like Leon Washington may get his chance as the #1 back of the Jets because rumor has it that Thomas Jones is asking for a new contract and honestly... I cant blame the man because he just set the Jets record for most TD's in a season and rushed for the most yards in the AFC and he's only due for like 900k next year which is dirt cheap for the production that TJ brings to the team but still...The man is 31, we missed the playoffs last year, and we only have about 12-14 million in cap space so if you ask me...Thomas Jones is an EX JET by the time the season starts unless both sides can work out a fair deal... With all that said...Behind our O-Line, I think Leon Washington could rush for well over 1,000 yards next year as the #1 back and you never know... He could be our next Tiki Barker or Willie Parker.
Nothing new to say here, he wants to be paid like a feature back. To date he has nor been asked to be or performed as one. Wait and see approach for 2009.
Thomas Jones will be a Jet in '09. I expect he will be gone after this year. It costs more to dump him then to keep him so don't expect him to be going anywhere.
Obviously there is no news. He shouldn't be paid like a feature back though, why would we do that if he isn't a feature back?
My gut feeling is that if the Jets don't offer Leon a monster contract he's going to reject their offer and take his chances in FA. Guy comes across as being very confident, I think he has tremendous faith in his ability to have a monster year and then get a monster contract.
From what I've heard recently, the Jets plans on giving Leon Washington and Nick Mangold long-term extensions in the future. I heard thst they would like to give it to them during this offseason.
Because only about 3 players have had more sacks over the past 4 seasons than Abraham, and the Jets basically missed the playoffs last season due to a total inability to rush the passer... I doubt that the Jets would just let Leon walk to free agency. There's no one approaching free agency on the Jets more likely to get slapped with the franchise tag, and never having been a starter Washington would have basically no choice but to accept it.
What about Nick Mangold, no way can we afford to let him go! He is so important to this franchise and should be here for the next decade!!!
Ya'll be paying Leon, now, you hear? There's no question he's worth it. What a find in the 4th round, eh?
