This is kind of overlooked... but isn't Leon in the final year of his rookie contract? If so, he needs to be locked up ASAP. I would hate to lose him. I think Leon loves it here in NY. I know NY sure as shit loves Leon. To see him walk out the door would be awful. I don't know if he could carry the entire load but I'd love to have a 1-2 punch with him and Michael Bush when Thomas Jones' time is up. He must be resigned.
Leon is gonna want Sproles money, ie...top 5 average. I hope we get him, but he's gonna be a big hit for a non featured back.
I can't imagine the FO would let our most dynamic playmaker walk out the door. Still, though, I'll feel better after I hear about him getting an extension.
non featured backs are common place, but he adds a lot more than just that... he is a returner and can line up in the slot if he has to. When someone is that dynamic, and they make the pro bowl in any way - they get a lot of money. Right now he's the best offensive player on that team. Even though he wasn't used correctly.
We were discussing this during some of the cap threads earlier. You're absolutely right. He needs to be a priority, and I'm assuming they realize that.
better word for this thread is something that needs to be addressed. I trust it will get done, this team is shaping up a lot like combination of the ravens and the titans. As Ryan brings that defensive mentality that keeps offenses grounded and produces intensity driven turnovers and game changers. While on offense, they have the white/johnson type of tandem backs, the difference being that jones is more a focal and point and skilled but still the bruiser. Leon is a lot like Johnson, but probably less skilled and less of a focal point, but still a major threat. Our offense should Basically become a run heavy offense anyway because of the qb situation, but wont be a top scoring offense. Leon is a big part of that, and I'm sure the agreement will be mutual.
Rex seems to big on getting Leon more involved in the offense this year as well making it even more important to extend him. He stated in a recent article that he'd like to see him less returning punts because he wants to feature him more in their offense. Im excited to see what he can do with more than 2 carries in a game.
I'm worried about this too. Leon seems pretty smart in interviews and very confident as well. I bet if the Jets low ball him he will take his chances with getting injured or having a bad year and wait until he's a FA. In a way he's done this before, he was the FL state player of the year and then disappeared at FSU then hit the NFL and his talent came out to the top. If the Jets don't pay him like a star player he will bide his time and get a big payday from someone else.
