You cannot have a guy a top five paid player on the team and afford to make him inactive. A good coach will find a way to utilize the players he has. At least in a limited roll. Mangini was a fool. So what should Rex do with Vernon? It is a fact that Rex will blitz 90% of the time and also a fact that Gholston is fast, but lacked the ability to cover TEs or shed blocks. Start with him as a backup OLB for both sides. He can rest our #1 & #2 and still get almost as much field time as the starters. You have to be on the field to learn and get better. Also we have no depth anyways. Second, until he proves he can cover or shed a block he should be only utilized as an OLB. 25% on the time he will blitz around the outside. 25% on the time he will blitz to the inside. 25% on the time he will blitz along with a Safety 25% on the time he should slide to the outside and back about three steps and stand there to cover any screen or QB scramble when the Safety blitz in. My reason is that from on OLB position he will have enough time on his blitz before he gets to the line for the D-linemen to already occupy the O-line so he doesn't have to shed a block which is proving to be a big fault with him. Also on the rare occation he isn't blitzing, he will have time to see the play develope and learn as well as maybe make a play. When used as a DE he has a hard time seeing the play and is shoved around by the BIgger OTs. The only thing Vernon did in college was go after the QB, so let him do it, but from a position where he can use his speed and find the holes. jJust my though. I may think he is a bust, but we are stuck with him, so why not use him.
The jury is still out on this guy. I am confident that Rex and Mike will get him on the field and light a fire under his ass. What remains to be seen is will he just be a solid player or can they push him enough to be elite? If they even get him to "above-average" we will have a great group of lb's.
Well, there is a story that he is in NJ working out which is a good sign..not only did he suck last year but he also got fat as the season progressed. This will be the last chance he has to prove he was worth the #6 overall pick.
Let's put his 2008 season in perspective... Laveranues Coles had the same amount of solo tackles as him.
I have a feeling The Ghost will have some impact this year. If not, Ryan and Tannenbaum will either force feed him playing time or ship his ass down the road in '10. I like the idea of putting him in on blitzes. He'd make a great decoy wouldn't he? Just like every time we send in our trick play guy, its always a trick play, every time we send in the Ghost, we could fake blitzing and drop into coverage and every now and then actually send The Ghost in to occupy a body or two.
Jesus, you think we are going to be blitzing safties that often? or is this just one of Gholstons four plays per month?
1 - Nice to see Post-it Notes Girl back. 2 - Jonnyd, I think you meant "off, off, off, off". I disagree. It's the Post-it Notes that give Post-it Notes Girl her air of mystery and exotic appeal. 3 - I fully agree with JetsFan. I don't know why Gholston was lumbered with learning (or attempting to learn, anyway) every nuance of a new position in his rookie season. I wanted to see the Jets keep it really simple for him, just sending him on a few blitzes until he got his feet under him. The results might not have been any better, but they couldn't have been any worse.
My expectations for him as a rookie were not high and even w/ low expectations he was a mjaor disappointment but people talk like this guy has been playing 5 years. he had a horrible ROOKIE season. Give the guy a chance to develop, he may not get better, he may be complete bust but lets give him a little bit of time.
This is a clear case, the jury has been tampered with and Gholston is guilty as charged. The DNA was all over the field sometimes you have to believe the evidence. He has an alibi in Mangini but I suspect with a little investigation the alibi won't hold up. I hope I'm wrong but this guy seems like a pussey to me.
Deep down I also have a questionable feeling, though, I also hope Rex can get something out of him. Do I ever think he will live up to a #6 pick? Nah, but we have him so I am just hoping he wont be a total bust. BT never lived up to his pick, but he has been serviceable.
How sick would it be and what kind of tone would it set if on our first play of our first game next season Gholston got a sack.
I love your enthusiasm, but there are so many things that are incorrect with this post that I can't even start. I can agree with "A good coach will find a way to utilize the players he has", though. How about just remove one post-it. :breakdance:
