Brand new here, life long Jet fan.

If we are about 13 mil under the cap. Here's what we should do IMO.

    1. Sign Byron Leftwich, I'm sure we could get him for about 2 mil

    2. Make a move to sign Terrell Suggs, he would be a huge improvement on an already decent D.

    3. I doubt we can make a move on Nnamdi Asomugha, the Raiders will find a way to keep him, so why not go after Kelvin Hayden? Isn't he Indy's #1 CB?

If we can do those three things, I'll be a happy Jet fan.

Everybody else is reporting that we would be $3 or $4 million under right now except the Star Ledger. Maybe the star ledger took Favre's salary off already, because they seem to be about $13 million off.

Found a possible explanation for the discrepancy. While the cap was originally projected at about $123 million, apparently some are projecting it to be closer to $130. As I said, we're currently at 119.8. If we're at the higher cap number, that leaves us about 10 million under. That's a lot better than 3 or 4 million, but still not enough to sign the rookies, let alone make a big splash in FA. We need many more moves.

They don't need to make a big splash in FA. They need to draft well and sign one other quality defensive player.

My shopping list would like this
Devery Henderson, UFA, New Orleans Saints ( Probably a Bargain)
Henderson?s career high in receptions may be 32, but he?s a deep threat and can make big plays down the field when things are clicking for the offensive unit. He?s had at least three scores in each season of his four-year career and set a new career-high in yards with 793, averaging almost 25 yards per catch...

Rocky Bernard, UFA, Seattle Seahawks (Another Bargain Backup)
Bernard had an off the field incident prior to the ?08 season, but returned from a one-game suspension to have another quality season while playing for a struggling team Seattle team. He also had a career high of 55 tackles this year and forced a fumble.

    or

Tank Johnson, UFA, Dallas Cowboys (Bargain Price?)
2008 Year to Date 22 tackles and 1 sack

Michael Boley, LB, Atlanta (26 y/o bargain)
Boley became a starter as a rookie because of injury and has held onto the role ever since. Had totaled three in each of the previous two seasons and has a five combined interceptions during his last three seasons. In ?07, he was credited with 110 total tackles, three sacks, three forced fumbles, and two picks, making for a very strong showing. Boley isn?t known as a star player, but he is a hard worker and a solid presence at the strong side position.

Mike Brown, UFA, Chicago Bears (Bargain because of his health concerns)
When healthy, Brown has proven to be a valuable part of the Bears defense. Brown?s best season was in 2001, when he had five interceptions and three sacks, but he has always been a steady contributor when he has been in the lineup. In four seasons, from ?04 through ?07, he played in just 21 games. In ?08, he played in 15 games, making 74 tackles and two interceptions.

If we re-sign Richardson, Clowney, Wright, Ratliff, and Elam.
This will maybe cost us around 4-5 mil?

    Jenkin’s 4 mil roster bonus.
This adds 4 mil to our cap.

Trade Coles saves 5 mil in cap space.

If we cut the following players Coleman, Baker, Barrett, Bowens, Moore, Brad Smith, and Eric Smith saves us about 14.5 mil in cap space

    Rework Sean Ellis deal.
This can save us up to 2 mil in cap space.

Favre retiring saves 13 mil in cap space.

This will give us approx 23 mil in Cap in a perfect world..If we do something with Bryan Thomas deal which I believe is $26 million with $9 million in guarantees but I think it is backloaded for 2011, we could even have more

Can you cut a player not on your roster? Franks signed a one year deal last season. He's already a free agent.

Jenkins was already factored into the cap space.

No one is going to trade for Coles and his 7 million on the cap this season.

Brandon Moore should NOT get cut, but rather restructured.

    David Barrett was already cut.

The remainder of your cuts net an extra 6.7 million, resulting in a maximum of 16.7 million (with an elevated cap). With restructuring, we could have more.

Henderson is somewhat interesting, but I'm sure Clowney can fill the role he would. He's little more than a deep threat.

The rest of them, I can do without.

I have been reading elsewhere that the Jets simply reclassified Pace and Rhodes respective roster bonus. Rhodes and Pace were both scheduled to get a 9MM roster bonus that counted this year. The Jets were/are able to spread that out 5 years. So instead of counting as 18MM they now count for 3.6MM a savings of 14.4 MM........ hence the Jets are now 17MM under the cap.

    The Math:

If left alone Pace and Rhodes @ 9MM per = 18MM

    Spread out over 5 years= 18MM/5= 3.6MM

    Total savings= 18MM-3.6MM= 14.4MM

So it is pretty easy for the Jets to be a under the Cap significantly.

I think these are realistic moves....

    1) Sign Leigh Bodden. Man coverage CBs are worth a look.

    2) Sign Bart Scott. Fill the void at ILB

    3) Sign vet QB (Leftwich or Garcia)

    4) D-Line depth

Whatever the cap figure is, the first thing they should spend a penny on is locking up Leon Washington long term. Pay the man.

Hmm...that would make a whole lot of sense. I hadn't heard that it was actually done. I'd imagine every team out there would want to move roster bonuses to signing bonuses this season. Get the savings now and when the cap goes away next year, it won't make a difference anyway.

Also, they wouldn't be able to spread out the full amount. It looks as though reclassifying the bonuses would spare about 12 million, which is a nice chunk of change.

I know that I've mentioned signing Gracia before but the guy is just too old. It'll be like bringing in Favre last year. I agree that we could use a veteran but I think we can go without mentioning Garcia until Leftwich gets picked up by another team.

I think we can go without mentioning Garcia. Period. Ever. It's not like bringing in Favre last year. It's unbelievably worse. I don't think we need Leftwich either, unless he comes very cheaply. I'd be ok with signing the cheapest veteran backup on the market, but I don't want either one of them starting.

If there's one thing Tannenbaum can do right, it's manage the cap. I really don't think it's going to be a hugely prohibitive issue.
