Maybe Kellen is the type of guy who will do best when he's got the burden on his shoulders from the outset. I for one am willing to give it a try with the kid -- I think he'll be very good.
Archive In August, Brett Favre arrived in the Meadowlands with the promise of a new day on his shoulders. Gone were the noodle arm of Chad Pennington and the befuddled inexperience of Kellen Clemens. The Jets had the quarterback and veteran leadership they needed to propel themselves into the playoffs. And then the last five weeks of the 2008 season happened. While Pennington was leading a patchwork Dolphins offense to the playoffs, a very possibly injured Favre wasn't able to do the same. The result was a season in which he threw as many touchdowns (22) as interceptions, his sack rate (5.4 percent) was the worst since 2000, and his DVOA fell from fourth with the Packers in 2007 to 27th in the league a year later. (Football Outsiders' 2009 projections for Favre are depressingly similar: 18 TDs, 17 INTs, a 61.5 completion percentage and 37 sacks.) So now what? Are the Jets back at square one with regard to the quarterback position? Is former Utah quarterback Brett Ratliff ready to take over? Should the Jets turn to free agency or attempt to trade for a starter? (Jaws knows a thing or two about quarterbacks.) Research into college quarterbacks conducted by our David Lewin has shown that the only two factors that matter when judging college quarterbacks selected in the first two rounds of the NFL draft are completion percentage and games started. Clemens completed 61 percent of the passes he threw at Oregon and started 32 games, numbers comparable to those of Eli Manning (60.8 completion percentage, 37 starts) and Drew Brees (61.1 completion percentage, 37 starts) on the high end and Patrick Ramsey (58.9 completion percentage, 32 starts) on the low end. Furthermore, while mentioning Oregon invokes the spirits of busts like Joey Harrington and Akili Smith, Clemens was far more accurate than they were at school -- Smith completed only 55.7 percent of the passes he threw, while Harrington was at 55.3 percent. Slow Starters? Kellen Clemens didn't light it up in his early opportunities with the Jets, but neither did some of the game's best QBs. A look at QB ratings for a few recent standouts: Player First 7 games Career Kellen Clemens 66.8 59.3 Peyton Manning 64.1 94.7 Donovan McNabb 63.2 85.9 Carson Palmer 62.6 88.9 Drew Bledsoe 61.9 77.1 Eli Manning 55.2 76.1 While Clemens struggled in his first go-round as the Jets' starter, that's not particularly surprising considering his inexperience and the fact that Pennington, while better, also struggled as the team's quarterback. Since 1995, the average quarterback has put up a quarterback rating of 75.0 in his first seven starts. In Clemens' seven starts in 2007, his quarterback rating was 66.8; not great, but certainly salvageable. Among the quarterbacks with worse ratings in their first seven starts include Donovan McNabb, Carson Palmer, Peyton Manning, Drew Bledsoe and Eli Manning. With an improved offensive line and another potential breakout receiver in tight end Dustin Keller, Clemens will be in a better situation than he was in 2007. I can get behind offering him a chance. A real chance, not like 07 with no OL, a playbook designed for someone else, insufficient reps and a team that was already out of the playoffs.
I've always liked Clemens, you can't honestly say we've already given him a chance we our disaster of a team last year.
I agree. This kid should have a chance to either sink or swim. He's finally got a good team around him and he knows schotts offense. Once and for all, this organization and the fans need to see what this kid is all about. I think we could be pleasantly surprised.
I want Kellen, plain and simple. Anyone remember the Steelers game last season? Drove us down the field to tie the game with under 2 minutes left. Then he went into OT and drove us down the field to win the game.
He's got the ability to lead this team, more than Ratliff or Ainge, that's for sure. I'm in the camp that says hand him the starting job, give him confidence moving forward and he'll produce. I still don't think he's ever had a fair shot.
I'm repeating myself. I don't like doing that. :sad: Until those last two minutes in the Steelers game, he was HORRIBLE. Even with the last minute drive (thanks to DRob and Kenyon Coleman, BTW - And disregarding Smith's diving drop in the end zone, Clemens was 3-3 for about 40 yards plus a 15 yard scramble, so take that into account on the game stats), Clemens was 14/31, 161yds, 1 TD 1 INT. Until he went into the spread, he was HORRIBLE. Once running a spread (look mom, just like college!) This is what kills me when it comes to everyone else who thinks that Clemens is a PROVEN loser. Nothing has been proven to me other than that he got his first true NFL shot on a crap team.
So, your saying he has the poise to plau a bad game, yet pull it togeather nad make big plays to win it at the end when it counts? Sounds like a glowing review to me.
I'm old and my memory is for shit, but didn't Clemens look pretty decent against the vaunted Ravens defense (and our present coach's defensive schemes) until that one end zone faux pas?
Clemens showed a great arm, great release sucked until the game was on the line and picked up his game in the pressure moments. Sounds good to me.
