Did you guys hear that Dr. Z (Paul Zimmerman) had a stroke in November?

If anyone is wondering why this is in the Jets forum Paul Zimmerman is the Jets representative in the HOF selection committee.

Apparantly he is unable to walk or communicate

I hope he gets better soon.

And from a Jets stand point I hope he gets better soon to make a push to get Klecko in the HOF.

I think Peter King wrote about it at the time.

EDIT: I see that's what you've linked to.

Well, if he doesn't make it all the way back at least he spent a lot of time in his final years with Brooklyn Decker.

    Where've you been?

I'm really going to miss his articles and Power Rankings. He always did have a soft spot for the Jets.

Yeah, they didn't really announce this and I'm not sure why. He's only SI's best football guy, right?

I read his Power Rankings pretty religiously, not because Power Rankings are legitimate, but because he's a funny motherfucker and he knows football better than anyone at Sports Illustrated. All of a sudden one week, instead of "Dr. Z's Power Rankings," I see "Don Banks' Power Rankings," my most hated of all sports journalists. W. T. F?!

If King hadn't mentioned it in his column, I would've assumed he just got canned for smart-mouthing the bosses or sexually harassing Brooklyn Decker, both of which are excellent reasons to lose a job.

    Hope he gets well soon.

EDIT: Not for nothing, but one of his last articles was about how loyal Jets fans were hoodwinked by Woody, Favre and the PSL's. Stroke or Jets-induced broken heart?

Dam that's a shame.... hopefully he can make some sort of recovery. It'd be great if he could see his Jets win the big one again just for one of their few friends in the national media.

It's very sad news. Dr.Z is one of the few media folk who actually care about the Jets.

He was beat writer for the Jets in the late 60's when they were on their one great roll as a franchise and I think he always has that team in the back of his mind when he's opining about the current messes in front of him. He follows the golden rule for a sportswriter who is also a fan, the less you say about your team the better but never criticize them.

My favorite Dr. Z story is the one where he got his hands on the Jet's injury report in 1968 from a friend who was one of the trainers. He made a few choice changes and a couple of minutes later the sheet was handed to Weeb Ewbank to read at his weekly press conference. Here's how it went (as I recall the story):

Weeb: Ok gentlemen here the list. John Dockery - Piles. John Ebersole - Worms. John Elliot - Pulled Eye. WHAT THE HELL!

    {room breaks up laughing}
