For the first couple of years Madden was the best color commentary guy around. But you can only hear him laud a player for having grass stuck to his helmet so many times. He really should have retired years ago, and also, recently he sounds as if he is not in good health. Its a shame he stuck around too long, sort of like what Favre is doing, sticking around until the legend becomes a joke. Madden was one of the best coaches ever, would have won multiple super bowls in a different era, like one without the Steeler Dynasty. And for a while, the best color man around. I wish him well and for his sake I hope he's just going to retire and not have to deal with al-Davis.
I'll throw another rumor against the wall to see if it sticks: The guy they've targeted could be Steve Mariucci, not Madden. This is just an educated guess, but Davis said in his famous "Overhead Projector Address of 2008" that he wanted to hire a football exec who is a "local guy" who is "currently in broadcasting". Madden fits the bill. But so does Mooch. Furthermore, the coaching staff is gaining some guys who have a history working with Mariucci. Ted Tollner, John Marshall, Dwaine Board, heck even Cable considers Mariucci a prime mentor (he coached under him at Cal). I wouldn't be shocked if it's Mooch. Watch, it probably won't be either!
You could make an argument that Madden along with Cossell did more to make NFL football the national game it is today as broadcasters than any player, coach or commissioner did. Madden belongs in the HOF for his broadcasting alone. He has become somewhat of a characture of himself the last few years but his outright love of the game and simple diagraming and explanations of the game make him one of the all time greats of sports broadcasting. What ever you think of the man, he loves the game, the players the owners, coaches and the fans and it always comes through.
Well said. I agree that he belongs in the HOF for his broadcasting, but I'm glad he got in as a coach because he certainly earned it. If anything his fame as "character" has sometimes unfairly overshadowed his successes as a coach...
Yes, THIS will be the year. Hehe. . . it's the surest bet going. Someday, the sun won't rise in the morning and we'll all be surprised, but Jeaux will STILL be predicting that this is the season when the young and exciting Raiders will surprise a lot of people.
Well, it looks like the Raiders finally got their head coach per NFL Network. It's Tom Cable. Surprise! Surprise. 2009: 5-11 Raiders...here they come.
Ted Tollner the new OC for the Raiders is John Madden classmate. Now is this coincidence or is another indication John Madden will be coming back to the Raiders organization.
I wouldn't get too excited...Ted Tollner is the guy who couldn't "coach up" Alex Smith for the 49ers. He stinks....which means..."Buffet Table" Russell is in great hands next season. Can't wait to see that "train wreck" waiting to happen in 2009.
Paul Hackett is the QB coach. So Russell in Good hands. Cable probably calling the plays( did excellent job down the stretch) and Tollner just there to assist Cable . Raiders are good to go in 2009. http://cache.daylife.com/imageserve/00CX9Cr88T7Ao/610x.jpg
the Raiders are shit...like they've been for the past 6 seasons, Jeaux....nice try, spud. And what's Paul Hackett gonna teach that big retard.... how to run a Draw play on a "3rd and 15"?? good hands...no wait...he's in GREAT hands.
As a Jets fan, I believe I have the right, and experience, to say that putting best and paul hackett in the same sentence is a crime unless the string of words following "best" is something along the negative lines of "face for a target".
Son Paul hackett has the track record developing QBs. KNow your history. Excellent choice...Joe Montana, Rich Gannon, and Chad Pennington just rave about the guy. He might be one of the most respected position coaches in the game. He wasn't much as a O-Coordinator, but as QB coach he has been exceptional. Here is a JOe Montana quote.(hope you know who he was) Sam Wyche, who taught me the basics of the game. Reading defenses, reading coverages, how to study, how to prepare. Paul Hackett, who continued that. Paul, if anyone knows Paul Hackett, a workaholic. Work you to death and prepare you to death so that when you got in the game you didn’t say “God, I didn’t know about that.” You were prepared. BTW- Raiders been to two AFc Championships and one superbowl this DECADE. You would probably take one as a Jet fan, every forty years.
LEt me ask you a simple question. Do you know the diffrence between a Offensive coordinator and a QB coach? If you do <what is your point? LMao
Wasn't he that country singer who died in a plane crash a few years ago? EDIT: My bad. That was John Denver.
Frankly I'm concerned that they won't even hire a front office guy. I know they're secretive but there has been no serious buzz that there will be anything more than an introduction of Tom Cable today. I'm afraid Al would rather die with his boots on than actually swallow some pride and summon help.
I love it. He "stinks" because he couldn't coach up Alex Smith, who had no business being the first pick of the draft talent-wise. Mike Martz, Mr. "find a guy off the street and make him a Pro Bowler", couldn't "coach up" Smith either!
enjoy the 4-12 season next year....i guess you guys are used to that by now. Tollner is garbage...and so is Martz.
