Given that the Jets are essentially moving to a 3/4 base defense is this out of the question come draft day? Robertson is not the prototypical 3/4 DT as he does not have the size or strength to clog the middle. Robertson is a 4/3 "Sapp" like DT that uses speed to penetrate upfield. A team using that type of defense would consider adding Robertson. His salary cap hit would be pretty substantial, but the Jets do have the cap room to absorb it this year through a trade. There is some precedence for this. Several years ago, the Lions were shopping Shaun Rogers after 2 dissappointing seasons. The Jets were in some preliminary discussions with them before talks broke down. Rogers then went on to have some very good years followed by a contract extension. The Jets will not get close value on this deal given Robertson's knee and the fact that traded 2 #1s and #4 to get him. However, given that he is a large cap hit and is not a good fit in our 3/4 base defense, would it not be smart for the Jets to move on now??? Additionally, the Jets could then either take Ngata at #4 or move back a few spots, picking up additional picks and then select Ngata. Ngata would be a much better fit for the new Jet's D with Von Oelhaffen, could gradually work his way into the rotation at DT.
I don't know what his contract is, but if it is huge, why wasn't HE asked to take a paycut? Maybe they have big plans for him?
He is damaged goods, the guy has no cartilage in his knees. I agree with SigmaXJet no one would ever take on that huge contract.
??? You obviously didn't read my post. We are obviously going to play a 3/4 defense. If Robertson isn't the guy at DT and is traded, Von Oelhaffen would hold the fort with Ngata rotating in.
D-Rob is still only catagorized as a "disappointment" ... he gets one more year before we pull out the Bust label. The Jets have to get what they can out of him, he's not going anywhere anytime soon. The positives: He's got heart, he can be explosive off the line and perhaps the change of scenery scheme-wise will bring out the best in him. Yeah I know, the no cartilidge, let's hope for the best.
Theres no way we would ever trade a guy like Dewayne who has so much potential and was a top 5 pick for a 3rd rounder which would probably be the best market price we could ask for.
I was very happy when we drafted him. However, after seeing his performance since then, any combination of the words Robertson and bye are fine with me.
Really? Is it the same saving if he is traded? I always thought I heard that if we traded him there would be a hit...
i assume we'll keep and play him until his contract is up, all the while hoping for the best. but if he doesn't improve by the end of his contract, Mangini will say sianara, Robertson. cheers
No way we trade him. Hes a good player. He only had one off year and you guys are trying to rid of him. He could play in the Nose in the 3-4 he does have the size and strength. Casey Hampton of the Steelers is 325 and Robertson is 317. Even if NT doesnt work out he could always be a good end in the 3-4. he would be too big for the OT to handle and he has good pass rushing skills.
