The orginal poster asked if Rex Ryan-style defense was coming to the Jets. I just pointed out that what they have in Baltimore is Baltimore Raven-style defense which Rex Ryan was fortunate enough to coach. There's no way in hell that he has a system that is going to make David Harris into Ray Lewis or Kerry Rhodes into Ed Reed or Shaun Ellis into Mike Mcrary or Calvin Pace into Peter Boulware. Those are all good players but they are not great players and the Baltimore system works the way it does because Ozzie Newsome went out and found great players to fit into it. You're not going to take Mike Tannenbaum and Terry Bradway and Al Groh's picks and get the same results. Not in this or any other universe.
Wow, I'm amazed that you posted such a negative, doom-and-gloom type post. You NEVER do that so I'm completely and utterly shocked
Temper, temper. One of us understands that this is just a place to exchange opinions about the state of the Jets and other sundry notions. The other one is apparently more invested in personalities, making him less able to actually see the world as it is.
With these guys coming in, Terrell Suggs, Bart Scott, and maybe even Ray Lewis will become possible signings.
I suppose you make a good point, but can't you also say that Ryan has been around all these great players for so long that he recognizes the talent we need and can recommend we get those kinds of players?
Ryan clearly has been around good defenses and probably understands what part of the performance on those defenses was talent and what was scheme. He has a couple of more years experience as a defensive coordinator than Mangini had coming in the door and he has a better pedigree overall because there's no question that defensive coaching ability exists in that family. He's going to be getting good input from his family, not shut out like Mangini was. There's still going to need to be a lot more talent on the defensive side of the field for the Jets before he has any hope of creating that type of defense. There is also going to need to be a lot of offeensive talent brought in to replace the aging players on that side of the ball. It's a tall bill to fill in just a couple of seasons and based on Woody's ownership style I don't think we can conclude that Ryan has more than a couple of seasons to make a big splash before Tannenbaum and he are on the outs and the next regime is coming in. I'd have been a lot happier with a hire that took into account the fact that this is a very hard place to coach and you need credibility coming in the door if you want to make it here.
Just because he doesn't have those players, doesn't mean his system won't work here. There are a bunch of talented players on the Jets D, and Ryan will be able to draft the players he wants in the upcoming draft. Ryan can build the defense around Revis, Harris, Rhodes, Jenkins, and whoever else he brings in via FA/draft. Ryan's system is very aggressive and he's basically the opposite of Sutton in terms of playcalling. I think it will work, but we'll just have to wait and see.
its a possibility...ray lewis and suggs are both unrestricted free agents...you think they love rex ryan enough to sign with us?...those 2 will give our D a hugeee boost
I think Jenkins, Pace, Harris, Revis and Rhodes are a real good start at having a talented D. What coach out there, that is available this season for the Jets, has more credibility than Rex right now? Credibility comes from your players, and the toughest marking players in the league, Ray Lewis and Ed Reed, LOVE this guy.
My point is, while Tannenbaum is certainly not Ozzie Newsome, he'll receive input from Ryan as to what kinds of players he needs to make this D elite.
I hope he brings that mentality to the Jets. I don't know why he wouldn't. I'm expecting a strong, attacking defense as opposed to the soft, read and react style that Mangini and Sutton had them playing.
So you don't give coaches any credit for developing talent and getting the most out of the players they have? Isn't that one of the most important parts of being a coach?
This is a stupid reply. Those names you mention were pro bowlers before the Defense was run by those coordinators? Bart Scott now? Who the hell was Bart Scott before the SYSTEM? Players become good due to the system they are in a majority of the time. Do you think Matt Cassel would be good any where else? And by the way, the Ravens D was statistically the best in 2000. Thats 8 years they have been top 5. The players change but the Defensive achievements stay the same. Has to be SYSTEM!
You can bet your ass the 2009-10 NY Jets won't be sitting back in zone coverage rushing only 3 guys on 3rd and 9. You can also best your ass that any slow, unmotivated defensive players who are unable to get after the QB will be not be drafted or in the starting lineup. Good riddance to mangini-suttonball!
