I voted for "other". My reasoning? After a 4-12 season, with the off-season moves we made (minus Favre), I believe we headed toward a .500 season. Give or take a game. When we actually got Favre, my guess was still .500. Anyway I believe the playoffs has to be your first goal. That should happen within 2-3 years if the rebuilding is going properly. Super-Bowl contention in years 4-6. If you are still trying to reach the playoffs after this, it is time to relieve your front office and CS of their duties.
Oh God another whining for Mangini thread. Only this time its masked with a general question in order to point out that we're secretly hypocrites for agreeing that it takes two years to take a 4-12 team to be a superbowl contender. A point few bring up is that Mangini's second year was filled with injuries and we were probably around an 8-8 team last year if everyone was healthy. We weren't a 4-12 team because that was the best that team could possibly play. Some years teams just have bad luck with injuries, and it isn't unreasonable to see them bounce back into the playoffs the following year. Mangini also couldn't call the right plays, couldn't utilize the strengths on the roster and never made adjustments. He just stood there chewing his gum thinking his golden game plan was gonna work every time, good riddence.
it is very difficult for team to win super bowl and to build strong team after many bad season. But we can do it next year maybe if we hire good couch!
OP - What is your definition of "Super Bowl Contender"? In the playoffs? Good record? I saw the Falcons, Dolphins, Cardinals, Panthers and Ravens come from terrible records in 2007 to the playoffs this year. Some are still standing as of this post......
Not at all; the question is a simple one based on fan expectations after all the fa spending last summer to help turn this team around. It's interesting that although the majority of voters consider two - three years a realistic time frame to see the turn around; many were only willing to give it six months here with the Jets. JMO, but that is what I call seriously unrealistic fan expectations !!
"Potential SB contenders" are a dime a dozen. Truth be known, there are 32 potential SB contenders in the NFL at the start of every season. Building a SB winner, that's another thing. I'm hoping that's what Woody and Tannenbaum have in mind with their coach-firing and subsequent hire. It seems like that was Woody's direction with all that spending last year, he just needs to concentrate on that objective and not lose track of where we want to go.
There is no such thing as a 3 year plan in this NFL day and age. Teams go from bad to good in one season & we would have went from 4-12 to division champs if we had a QB that was just decent, instead we got a QB that was horrible when it counted most.
I agree and feel we have the majority of the pieces in play to "take this experiment" as some call it and go for it now. It doesen't make any sense to me to say "Well, we gave it six months, didn't make the playoffs; so lets change direction again". It seems to me that improving upon what we already have in place for a run next season is the best way to go !!
5 Year plan X 2 Owners plus 4 GM's plus 2 QB drafted in the top 5 picks/bad luck injuries+SOJ=53 years.
The Jets already went from bad to good this season with "Five More Wins" than last year. You have the QB in place; it's really just a question of how to utilize him properly now !!
The talent on this team was highly overrated! Until we get a Qb and Fix our Defensive line noting positive will come out of the Meadowlands. We are more than a few players from the Sb. Our personnel is far inferior to the ones of most of the playoff teams in the Afc. Except Miami and they have better coaching and a better front office.
Wins on the road against the Titans and the Patriots proved there is an excellent pool of talent on this team to build towards next year with !!
It is over with Favre in NY, it was a gamble that lost, a gamble I do believe had to be made but if he is brought back for another year it will be a disaster. Good luck with your next team! or do you go back and become a Packers fan if he does retire? I'm not sure how that works.
Aaron Rodgers failed miserably in Green Bay this year. Do you think a possible return to G.B is in Brett Favres future. Imagine the media frenzy on that one.
Hope he makes you eat your words. He has had a habit of making people eat them every couple of years !!! P.S - If you really believe that this team should have gone from 4-12 to having the kind of chemistry where it should be winning the SB six months after Favre got there; you really must be sniffing too much glue !!!
