Ellis has 13 sacks in 2003 & 10 sacks in 2004 as a 4-3 end his real spot. Gholston dominated as a 4-3 DE at Ohio state. Harris played 4-3 MLB at Michingan & Barton played 4-3 weakside outside linbacker at Maryland why not put guys in the spots they have been successful at ?
Your entire list is the B gap, or are you one of those people who like to make generalized comments and never back them up?
^^Mosley/Pouha...and draft low or sign a 4th guy on the cheap. A 4 man DT rotation would work just fine. I know, not the point, but it got me thinkin'.
No, no, its kinda the point. We lack some speed in the LB core. Harris was a 4-3 MLB in Michigan and did well. Barton used to be a 4-3 OLB before Mangini. So we need at leat one 4-3 OLB and? Ellis can play DE in the 4-3. So could Pace, Thomas and Gholston. Phoua and Jenkins can pla DT in the 4-3. We could also rotate Mosley and Coleman in there. The DB's are the same no matter the scheme. Were are the huge holes that should be there that cannot be fixed in one draft?
negative. i like the 3-4 because its speed that will become, if it hasn't become the dynamic already in the NFL this generation. The linebackers are quicker and faster, some could play safety, and there are safeties that are so tall and muscular ala Brian Dawkins, they could play linebacker. We have Kris Jenkins. Coleman who underachieves. and then you have Ellis who is consistent. To bolster out line now. we need a DE/DT to rotate in to give guys on opposing O's a different look, a different style. Allow Jenkins and Ellis to come out for some plays, and keep the defense balanced, and aggressive. one guy the entire site will love, that NOONE has mentioned is: Vince Oghobaase DT- Duke I hope we can steal this LB to replace Murrell or Spencer and actually have someone who could perform on game day if needed. Zack Follett LB- Cal Our primary need is safety. And if you have seen the work that Rex Ryan has down with safeties in Baltimore. Leonhard, Landry, Reed. He is very successful in bringing out the best in his players. If we can't get Taylor Mays in the first, we would need to go after the more dominant playmakers on offense ala Harvin, Maclin, Britt... but Spikes, Curry would be worth the 1st round drop. I like Patrick Chung, and Rashad Johnson as solid safety candidates.
The Bolded part is not at all what we are currently set up for. Our 3-4 has larger LBers because it is a copy of the Pats system, not the one used in Pittsburgh or Baltimore. No one on our Current roster could swap between Safty and Linebacker. Very few players in the NFL have the size and skill to pull of such a move. The two positions require vastly different sets of skills. I like the 3-4 as well because of the blizting options it opens up, but our current (past in Mangini's case) coaches did not take full advantage of it. Too often playing it safe and never going for the throat. Our Coaches call the plays like a bunch of cowards and our play reflected it at the end of the season. Yuo say its a negative that we can not swap back to a 4-3 with current personal? Why? What are the reason? What holes would we have to fill? NT is Still Jenkins and Phoua. The 3T duties fall to Coleman and Mosley. DE to Ellis, Pace, Gholston, Thomas. Linebackers of Barton, Harris and a big ? after that. Its not a huge reach.
i mean... out of these defensive coordinators, Dick Lebeau is by FAR the best, he just wouldnt want the job.
Yes, but he was an awful head coach and at 71 gettign up there to handle the every day duites of a head coach for a long time. He would not be a great hire by any means.
you read too much into what i read. i didnt say realistically a linebacker could play as a safety, but back in the day you never had safeties as big as they are now, and linebackers with as much speed and coverage ability as some have right now. DO NOT tell me that Pouha can be a solid NT if that was the case we wouldnt had such a horrible run defense when Jenkins had to come out. Truth is a 4-3 DT cannot play 3-4 NT. Jenkins has proven to be an excellent exception, with a little learning curve. Gholston is a non factor. Thomas lacks the size and skill set to be a DE, Barton will not be back, and Harris will remain a MLB/ILB. Sutton does not know how to implement the 3-4 effectively hopefully we remain with this system because it is truly the cornerstone of our defense right now. Switching back to the 4-3 takes Pace off the starting lineup, and then he isn't worth his paycheck. What your recommending is nonsense, and unrealistic. It's never going to happen anytime soon. The personnel has become accustomed this season to a 3-4 it will remain a 3-4.
Our LBers are just as big as Baltimore's. It's just that we have Kenyon Coleman and they have Haloti Ngata. We have Bryan Thomas/VG, they have Suggs. We have Barton, they have Lewis. Baltimore's D is really a more aggressive version of the Pats D IMO. Two similar styles, but very different philosophies when it comes to "the right time" to be aggressive. Both D's try to get pressure with minimal affects to coverage basically...and for that you need well coached, very high end personell at key spots. We have Rhodes, Jenkins, and Revis in their early or mid-prime. We need more while the windows open.
In 2010, when Terrence Cody become available perhaps I'll change my opinion. But there is no DT in this years draft that we could realistically get, to complement Jenkins size and power. It would be nice to get Raji from BC, but right now we need to play the cards dealt to us. No Pouha and Mosley do not cut it as starters. Thats why theyre backups for a reason. I'm assuming Rex Ryan comes, and he implements a 3-4 system, occasionally using the 46 as a changeup. Our defense is not a carbon copy of the Pats our linebackers could outplay theirs any day. The 3-4 commands the need for bigger, stronger DE/OLB hybrid linebackers. Thats why we have Gholston, Pace, and the underachieving Thomas.
I agree completely. If were able to add speed/size to an aging DE position or add a DT that can bring Jenkins out and play in his absence effectively. Then we have an all-pro caliber line.
DE - Ellis is old but can still play, Coleman on the other hand does not have the speed to be a pass rushing threat on the opposite side and his head will be called for in about 3 weeks into the regular season. Thomas is a train-wreck of a player in general but more so as a DE as everyone who is a fan of this team knows. Pace had a shit career as a DE in Arizona before making the switch to LB under Whisenhunt and the 3-4 system. I'm still not sure where the logic is coming from when people argue in moving Pace back to DE. He sucked when he tried it, he changed positions and did better, so let's put him back??? DT - We have Jenkins and ??? as our starters. Pouha is a career back-up and a lot of people seem to forget that he is going to be 30 years old in February, not exactly a youth movement on the d-line. Mosley is a solid backup, but no more than that. MLB - We have no one to play this position, absolutely no one. Barton is a WLB in a 4-3, and Harris is too slow. Try putting a guy with a 4.59 40 time in the middle of the field and see how much fun it is to watch every HB and TE look like a perennial pro bowler. He hits hard, he's strong, and he has good instincts but he's not the type of player you can leave out on an island in the middle. He translates to the SLB position much better than as a MLB. If we put in a 4-3 this leaves us with the following defined starting positions SDE - Ellis NT - Jenkins WLB - Barton SLB - Harris Thomas = axed, Pace = ?, Pouha + Mosely = backup/committee, Coleman = axed, Gholston = we have no f*cking clue.
...and how exactly is this much worse then our current problems? We have no pass rush from the outside. Pace is a decent LB in the 4-3, but not a world beater. Thomas is just as horrible as a 34 linebacker as he was a 43 DE. Gholston, did nothing as a 34 LBer this season. Not being able to get to the QB often was our biggest problem in the second half of the season and that is the primary responsability of the two OLBs in the 34. They did not get the job done on passing downs. The D line has the same problem with Coleman. Still cannot pass rush to save his life and should be replaced. his main attribute is that he holds his ground on running plays and is almost 300 pound. Which is why I suggested moving him inside in the 43 on a switch. Ellis is still gettting older. We have Jenkins, Harris, Barton, Pace and Ellis who do thier Jobs well in the 34. Your list for the 4-3 drops off Pace. One less front 7 player. One that already plays DE in our Nickle sets. So I had the line as Ellis Jenkins / Phoua Coleman / Mosley Thomas/Pace/Gholston .:riMeTiMe_KiD::. (the dots in your name are awful bud) wants to keep saying Phoua and Mosley are not starters and I did not suggest they would be, but would still rotate in as they do now. The Second DE slot could work out or be a complete mess. Kinda like the second OLB spot oppisite Pace is now. There are problems in both sets that need to be fixed in this draft. The fact is we seem to need a lot of help no matter what set we stay in. A pass rushing demon is a must if Gholston does not suddenly come alive. Even if he does another would help greatly. That can come in a DE or OLB in the 34. If we did switch back it would need to be a DE. At the very least we need to replace Thomas and Coleman no matter what set we stay in if we want an elite defense some year. Thats 2 of our current front 7 starters.
because he did not build that defense, the front office did. all he did was take great talent and make the most of it. difference being, giants have great defensive talent, jets do not!!!!!!!!
