Favre had a legit injury that prevented him from throwing downfield at the velocity he was accustomed to. Penny had no injury in the Baltimore game. The Jets and Miami played near-identical schedules, but the vastly more talented team, the Jets, lost to the same teams that the mighty Chad-led Dolphins managed to squeak by. Yes, clearly Chad is the reason Miami won all those games. It couldn't be anything like the Jets were overrated, or that Miami has a lot of young players and a motivated new coach. And if you seriously believe Belichick would have entertained the thought of Chad Pennington playing QB for him for even 30 seconds, you're out of your mind.
Junc, your Pennington bias is ridiculous. Pennington is guilty of the same mistakes that you point out about Favre, but when Pennington makes a mistake you rationalize it in any way that you can to put the blame elsewhere. Favre was horrible down the stretch. Nobody's denying that. Pennington's play on Sunday was horrendous, yet you blame it on everyone around him and place no responsibility on Chad. Anyone that has been following the Jets for the past 8 years knew exactly what was going to happen on Sunday. It's not an isolated incident; it's the story of his career.
The blueprint for getting Chad to commit horrendous turnovers first surfaced in the Kansas City game, the very first game of the season back in... what the hell year was that now... 2006? That was vintage Chad-nese Firedrill at its best. Chad had no chance against the Ravens defense Sunday. They knew what they had to do and did it... the longer the game went on, the worse it got. I can still picture Chad trying to make that tackle on Reed singlehandedly and getting bowled over on the sideline. The thing about bringing pressure on Chad that works so well is, it's not just the INTs, its that the turnovers come in all forms and from everywhere... miscues... poor handoffs... unprotected balls... holding on too long... bobbles and tipped passes... etc. Had we kept Chad, I'd could have quite possibly been sitting in my seat Sunday watching us play the Ravens and watching the same exact scenario unfold right in front of my eyes. I don't know what's more painful... watching Favre go down in flames against the Dolphins or actually making it to the first round with Chad and then seeing those 5 turnovers.
I like and respect Chad, but we had to move on. In the end we would have been better off just trading him out of the division and seeing what we had in Clemens and Ratliff. We still don't know and that makes this offseason a bigger guessing game than usual.
Yeah. Favre was worth the shot but we all knew going into that whole thing that we'd be delaying a solution to our long-term QB situation. And here we are now. No closer to knowing than we were in August. That's the ass-kicker. I'm not sorry we took the chance on Favre... we had to do that... but the anxiety now is going to be, who do we start now? I do not want Favre back, I do know that.
OK and it still wasn't the reason he sucked. I like you Alio but you are clueless when it comes to football. Chad had a bad game, Favre had a bad year. Chad took a less talented team further than Favre took the Jets. If the blueprint was available in 2005 how did he lead 2 teams to the playoffs in the next 3 seasons? Why do I even bother to respond to such nonsense?
Junc, as much as we argue, you're still one of my favorite posters. Regardless of that, you're the only person on the planet that feels the way you do about Chad. This thread tells you that pretty clearly. So either you're the one who doesn't get it, or it's the rest of the world.
Are you sure? Yeah, he made some bad decisions..ok. He also had us at 8-3 and with a real HC we might have been 11-0. There was no reason for any of those losses but the HC can be absolutely blamed for NE and Oakland. The last 5 games he looked like he could barely throw at all most of the time.
Its amazing that i see all of this anti-Pennington sentiment for his making the playoffs and losing to the number 1 defense in football. Let me ask you : what did that so called golden gunslinger HOFer accomplish this year, besides showing once and for all that he has been washed up for a long time, is a total one way malcontent, got a capable coach fired, his team hates his guts and no NFL level coach worth his salt will coach this team until they get confirmation that he finally walks away? Brett Favre did not really think his "aw shucks" act would work on us here in NY, did he?
2 teams to the playoffs in the next 4 seasons ('05, '06, '07, and '08), but who's counting. He did make it to the first round twice, with some help from other teams along the way, and lost both of them. So let's talk about that. Would you say his play in those 2 out of 4 season, first-round playoff games was good enough to go further? Was he going to "lead" that team, as you say, deeper, or did he choke in those big games? When up against legitimate pass-rushing teams and good defenses, does he get the job done? Games that matter? The answer is no. And I'm not settling for a guy who takes us 9-7 or 10-6 and an occasional first-round playoff game that we squeak into because we get help. Chad is a choker. He first exposed it in that September '05 Kansas City game and he exhibited it thereafter many times. And it got worse with the injuries. Now he's healed and it still reared its ugly head on Sunday.
I'd say he was first exposed in the '03 playoff game against the Raiders. Vintage Chad. Little did we know then that we'd be seeing that same scenario play out over and over again for years to come...
Being the only person is ok. I was one of the few to criticize the Favre move and I turned out to be right. I don't really get swayed by popular opinion and I like that. Sometimes I'm right and sometimes I'm wrong. W/ the same coaching staff and less talent in '06 we made the playoffs w/ Chad. The coaching didn't cost us early. I don't balme Favre for week 2 since he was new then but our O only scoring 10 cost us as did the STs. At oak Favre cost us and we just got whipped at SD. I'm counting and it was 2 in 3, he was out for the year week 3 of '05 so he didn't have a chance to get to the playoffs in '05. What help did he get from other teams? In both years he and his team faced a win and in scenario and they won each time. NE didn't have a great D in '06 but they were better than us and the game turned on a fluke play though I doubt we win anyway. Tom Brady NEVER loses at home in January. Chad was first exposed as a choker for losing a game week 1 in 2005?:rofl2:
