Agreed, if Santana couldn't flourish in our offense like he did with the Deadskins, neither would Sinorice
ok fine lol, the only reason i would want him is because of his speed, he could be the next steve smith, but you are right we need a big reciever which we lack at this point
I appreciated Moss's Bomb and the punt return, I was at the SD game, I loved it. Moss is a playmaker and that's great. He also had poor games in 2004. In Pittsburgh it was our defense and special teams that put us in a position to win, but mainly the defense. At the SD game I remembered JMac catching slants over the middle, jumping for stuff on the sideline putting us in FG range... anyway... we'll agree to disagree about JMac, that's fine... Doesn't make you a bad person, doesn't make me a bad person. Ha ha ha. But about Chrebet... you are mistaken. I guess everybody has their definition of greatness, but for me it is as simple as this... Of course he did not have a career like Jerry Rice's and was not as glamorous as other "great" WRs, but he was undrafted out of unkown Hofstra on LI, too small, too slow, never given a chance, and he was a warrior for the Jets, had over 7000 yards receiving, made phenomanal clutch catches, wasn't afraid to block, wasn't afraid to go over the middle, and fought threw all those concussions, not to mention his #80 Jets jersey is the most widely sold jersey among Jets. As a long-time Jets fan, that to me is greatness.
Chrebet If we came away with a guy the quality of Chrebet in the middle rounds I'd be happy. Check my thread on 2nd and 3rd round picks to see the receivers we picked up from 87-00. Memorable names like ... Reggie Rembert Alex Van Dyke Ryan Yarborough Good Times.
Wayne Chrebet was a good WR who had a fairly long NFL career. He was an extremely well liked player by the fans. He had a very productive career, he had a lot of heart and he was tough. He was never a great NFL WR. For the record I don't consider Santana Moss to be a great WR either but so far in 5 years he has had two years that are better than any year that Chrebet every had in the NFL.
This is why I would have no problem with the Jets taking Davis with the fourth pick. Granted he is a Tight End, but he is bigger than any Wide Receiver we have by far and he is just as fast and more fluid than our starting wide receivers. Our offense will become much better when almost every sunday you have a tight end who is a mismatch for any defender no matter who they put on him. I think that will make the QB better too... Now Understand, I only make this move is Mario is gone.
I believe that the Jets taking a TE at the 4th pick was predicted by Nostrodaumus as the first sign of the end of the world. The second sign was Paris Hilton not being a whore any more.
Your definition of greatness and mine are completely different and it is as simple as that. That's fine, agree to disagree. Obviously I'm a Jets fan so I will be biased with Wayne, but stats don't define greatness for me. I would never consider TO a great WR, because he lacks the overall wholistic excellence as a player, even though he could put up gaudy stats. Chrebet was great because he was a possession receiver (not a deep threat or big play guy necessarily) who was always open on 3rd and 4th downs and moved the chains along with his toughness and team mentality etc. While his background may not matter to you, to me that was a lot to overcome, thus making him great. Again just difference of opinion. How long have you been watching the Jets? I started watching in the Richard Todd era so my favorite Jets receivers are Wesley Walker and later Wayne Chrebet. I have watched old films of Maynard and read about him, but didn't see him play live. Just wondering because all my friends are also huge Chrebet fans also. We agree about Moss, he is not a great receiver... yet. He might be one day or not, we'll see. For me he is not in Wayne's class yet just because he had 2 years with more total receiving yardage. That means nothing. That is his position to be a big play guy, a deep threat, speedster, he should have the big gains on his team. After some more consistency he could be really good. In 2003 against NE, on Pennington's 5th INT, he should have made the catch, but he had alligator arms over the middle when they were only down by a TD. He was young and it was a down year and he probably fixed that, but I don't ever remember Chrebet doing that. There was a reason he was extremely well-liked by the fans.
Wayne was not a great reciever by any stretch of the imagination... Gutsy is more like it, but great, thats LAUGHABLE. Ellis
I've been watching the Jets since 1965. The most talented Jet WR without a doubt and as talented a WR as I have ever seen in the NFL was Al Toon. The best possession and toughest WR in Jet history was George Sauer JR.
Ellis, "by any stretch of the imagination" and "laughable"??? Wow. I guess we are all entitled to our opinions. I disagree and that's fine. I don't know many Jet fans personally that would call it laughable, but I guess they are out there. Who was your favorite Jets receiver then?
Haven't had one... we haven't had a receiver who had the tools to be a great reciever since Al Toon. Keshawn had a chance to be a very good receiver if he could have ever kept his mouth shut, and Coles has the tools to be a very good receiver as well. But great receivers have all the tools, except for maybe Steve Largent, who many compair Chrebet to quite often. Largent was great because he defied everything AND stayed healthy, something Wayne had problems with. Now I'm not putting Wayne down... he was a good Jet, and a fan favorite becuase of his underdog status, but to clasifly him as great... thats a strech. Ellis
So, you have been watching almost from the beginning and that's where Wayne stands for you. Fair enough. Where does Maynard rank for you? I loved Al Toon and wish he didn't have the durability problems he had, I actually met him as a kid at a football camp on LI. I still liked Walker better though. I don't know enough about Sauer Jr. except he looked great in SBIII and that he left football early and did some writing or something. I saw in a Namath documentary recently he wrote some articles about football being brutal, but it did not go into much detail.
Fair enough, I guess it's how folks classify or define things. I don't classify Chrebet as elite of all time like Jerry Rice and Largent, but for me he was a great player, and I tend to gravitate towards players like him and Curtis Martin rather than someone like Keyshawn, and that might have something to do with my definition. I always like Largent's play as well and was annoyed when Rice asked to wear his retired jersey.
Maynard was probably the most productive WR we ever had, he was great. Personally I think both Toon and Sauer were more talented and Walker would rank behind all 3 of them. I also think Keyshawn and Coles are very talented WR as were Moore and Jerome Barkum who played both TE and WR. Wayne in my mind wasn't as good as any of those above however he was highly productive particularly when we had a real go to guy like Keyshawn and Coles on the team with him. Toon in my mind might have been the single most talented player the Jets every had. He was a special one of a kind player that doesn't come around very often. It was to bad we had such a short time to enjoy his talent.
that crazy.. thats a great 4th rd if that happens.. lets hester be 5th string(as he learns the position better) WR/KR/PR.. and stoval give us the big reciever we need he we be a #3 wr
I agree with u Wayne , no matter how much u liked him u cant call him a great reciever. lovable and tough but not great.
