This does make a lot of sense. If you think about it, Mangini is a complete disciplinarian, someone who has been criticized as being overly detailed to a fault..Favre is the antithesis of this. He plays on the edge of his jock strap and love to improve on the field, he never seemed like a "Mangini Guy." Chad was however a Mangini guy. I do realize that Chad limited the offense that we wanted to run here, but as a student of the game, the X's and O's and the intangibles, Chad had that going, and I think EM was more than comfortable going into this season with him as the starting QB. Woody orders the Favre move done and EM most likely made it vocal in the underbelly of Giants Stadium and in Florham Park that although he likes Brett, Brett's style was keeping him up at night. This would cause a huge tidal wave through the FO, as Woody would feel slighted...given the 5 game collapse, he needed no excuse to rid the Jets of Eric, and he did just that. All the talk about Eric's dedication and all is true, but behind the scenes the forced hand Woody made Eric play most likely instigated Eric's fate. HOWEVER....It was not Bretts decision to punt after a 45 yard FG that was taken back, which would have been good from 60. It was not Brett's fault we did not blitz enough, or pressure Seneca Wallace and Hill,or even Chad. It is not Brett's fault that in-game-adjustments failed time and time again, or the lack of them for that matter. Eric wants to play a certain type of football..and Brett likes to play another..Brett puts asses in the seats and money in Woody's pocket..Eric never did and never would. This is my "Guiding Light" soap opera version of the 2008 Jets
I never said Favre cost Mangini his job, and I hate beat writers, especially ours. Mangini and staff did a shitty job the second half of the season, and a lot of the first. There is no arguing against that. I just don't think that Mangini would have been fired if there hadn't been PSLs to sell. And I am beginning to think there would be no Brett Favre in a Jets jersey, either. Before this week I would have been of a different opinion, but something about how things have been going down just stinks to high heaven. And something about this whole situation makes the premise of the article ring true for me. Rhodes saying Favre better start putting work in next season. Jenkins saying Mangini should have been allowed to do what a coach is allowed to do. Woody and Tanny sucking up to Favre in the Fire Mangini presser, the ditching of Pennington in the classless way it was done, the showcasing, the meeting with the Mayor, all of it. I'm really beginning to hate Woody Johnson.
Talk to the Packers, find out Favre's not interested, tell Woody he doesn't want to play here, and move on.
Woody and tanny complimented mangina too. they were dignified in their remarks. No one forced thousands to buy #4 jerseys, just like no one forced 10,000 people to show up at TC when Favre came aboard. the fact that he played badly the past few games is indisputable, but the animalistic venom of Jet fans lashing out is...par for the course i guess.
Really Rich... way to be up to date on things. Cowher has made nu such demands and Tanny has already said he is willing to make accomadations in order to appease Cowher. Sounds to me like Cimini is reaching here.
I'm sure you've been a fan a long time too, so I think you'd agree that having a hungry owner (regardless of PSL's) is a good thing. Penny played like shit last year, as did the rest of the team, and he looked like shit in preseason. I hardly find it classless the way he was let go, as we could have restricted his new assignment. We let him go free and clear, with all the bag fulls of money he made here.
Even if Mangini didn't want favre here, that doesn't explain the disgusting way the defense played in the last few weeks or with the season on the line and the media saying start running the ball he still refused to run the ball. Favre may not have helped mangini, but thats not why mangini is unemployed right now. Hes unemployed cause he couldn't get it done.
I always felt it was all Woody and that neither Tanny or Mangini wanted anything to do with Favre. WHAT A FREAKIN MISTAKE!!!
All this does is prove what many of us have been saying all along. Favre was a publicity stunt to help the team sell more PSLs and that's still the case. Woody wants Favre back not to make his team better, but to make him more money. What a shame for true Jets fans. If this is true, this will go down as one of the worst moments in Jets history.
And we know those things are true how? Tannenbaum actually spoke to the media and told them that? We're hearing so many things it's almost impossible to tell what's true.
If Mangini didn't want Favre then he should be fired for that alone. Going into the season with Pennington or Clemens would've been a disaster.
Going in with Pennington we would've probably had the same record. We just would have beaten more bad teams and lost to the good teams.
I've stated a number of times on these boards that Favre was brought here for marketing reasons and not football reasons. And every time people said I was crazy. You don't build around a 39 year old QB. They got a lot of attention and sold lots of merchandise. I won't be surprised in the least to see more of these reports coming out. I don't think these forgives any of Mangini's sins, but I think a good portion of the late season collapse is on Brett. It was a mistake to bring him here. If Cowher does come here, I hope his first move is to show Brett the door. DbJ
our record would not have been the same considering we beat two good teams all year, and lost to four crappy one's down the stretch. we would probably be like the dolphins, and in the playoffs.... even if for only a one game playoff loss to a better team.
I'm pretty sure EVERYBODY ON THIS BOARD knew that Favre was brought in the sell seats. Duh? For what Cowher will cost (and I hope Woody spends it), it will be for no different reason. Cowher won't get the chance to show Favre the door, as Favre would retire the day the decision was announced. Cowher would actually have the sack to bench Favre if he plays poorly, and he won't go out like that.
