The Jets have asked permission to interview Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo for their head-coaching opening. At least on paper, Spags is the quintessential head coach. His players love him, he looks the part, and he's awesome at in-game adjusting. He'd also be the antithesis to Eric Mangini, who backed off blitzing late in the '08 season. Spagnuolo is willing to bring pressure from any position on any given play. Fantastic news.
I think Spagnuolo is about as excellent as a head coaching prospect can be... that said... he's still a prospect and I'm not sure we want another prospect... If we did go with one though, he's the one I'd choose.

he could pull a Tomlin, keep the 3-4, hire a great 3-4 DC, and with his mentality the team could do well.
I think some folks here need to stop being so worried about Spags, simply because he's another "first-timer" like Mangini. This year proved that rookie HCs can put their stamp on a team early and get success out of 'em. Besides, didn't Mangini play a rather insignificant role in NE anyway? Spags seems to have much more influence on the Giants D, than Mangini did for the Patsies.
And what if he doesn't? Who friggin cares. It isn't as if our 3-4 defense is some type of top 5 defense. It's filled with holes. Switching to the 4-3 at this point is even simpler then having the "perfect" 3-4 pieces.
I'd be all for it. It's about time we get a tough, defensive-minded guy in here to kick this team into shape. We've had plenty of years where the offense was easily good enough to get the job done but the D just couldn't hold up it's end of the bargain when it came down to it. How many times have us long-time Jets fans watched huge leads evaporate due to a defense that turns to mush in the clutch?
We have to at least consider Spagnuolo. He has built one hell of a defense with the Giants these last couple of seasons. He lost Strahan to retirement last year and then Umenyiora this year to an injury and they are still one of the top defenses in the league. He could do a lot for this franchise. At least this season there is some good blood out there to consider and interview.
Don't like the move. 1. Once again, Jets need to change defensive schemes. 2. He still only has 2 years of experience as a coordinator. 3. The defense he has lead is a VERY talented one. 4. I love him. For all these reasons I would not want to see Spags as Jets HC.
You won't be. Our D has talent, will get more talent this offseason, and can flex into both fronts IMO. And Spags uses 3 man fronts...the Giants would line up Tuck, Robbins, Strahan in there during their Super Bowl run...with Kiwi and Osi as the pass rushers.
*his players love him* Enough said, lets move on. The best head coaches... players RESPECT them, but definitely don't love them. Most the team in NE doesn't necessarily like Bellicheck, but they have a great respect for him and his philosophy.
the 3-8, 3-4 defense was filled with holes... I have a feeling if more pressure was sent, it would be a different story. The D was top 10 early in the season. If they don't wear down, it stays the same. Going back and forth between two fronts is fucking stupid. Where is the consistency that is preached by this FO?
The Giants under Spags have used 3 man fronts. This does not mean they have done so consistently. Not the same as a base 3-4.
He'd be my second choice behind Cowher, I think he has the balls to kick these guys asses and he certainly isn't this passive conservative type guys either.
