We don't necessarily need a coordinator. We could hire a very good positional coach, like Miami did with Sparano. As far as a head coach with experience goes, who out there with experience would you like besides Cowher? Marty? Doubt he'll come here after his son was fired, and he's not that great anyway. Wade Phillips? Romeo Crennel? Besides Cowher and Marty, there aren't any head coaches available who have been successful before... realistically, I mean. It will probably be a first time guy. Here's hoping it's someone from a successful team who has done a good job with whoever or whatever he's coached.
Apparently, Cowher's not an option. Per the AP's story on Crennel's firing: Browns owner Randy "Lerner has already begun the interviewing process. On Saturday night in New York, he met with former Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cowher, who told him he has no intention of returning to coaching in 2009 and asked Lerner not to include him on his list of coaching candidates."
Its really not a big deal, Most teams other than the jets, Pats and chargers switch all game long. They are the only 3 that religiously play the 3/4... of course were the only one whos defense really sucks. lol
What about Pace? I have to agree, this Front 7 wouldn't be all that bad without the upgrades. As long as Gholston turns into a monster and the new DC makes QB's afraid, I'm down for it.
A 'defensive minded' coach. Not sure how I feel about that. Sounds great on the surface, but we have to hope he isn't a moron that will annoy us with the play calling on offense. You have to hope that a defensive minded coach hires a very good offensive coordinator. That is huge. I want a coach who is aggressive, too.
Why would we move Ellis to DT? He was a 4-3 DE for almost his entire career. Herm tried that (3T) and it failed miserably.
Yeah, with the exception of Ellis; I forgot to add that. I guess the other DT would have to be found in FA and/or the draft. Unless we want DeVito and Pouha in there (which I don't).
I would like to stick with a 3-4. It makes your defense that much more sophisticated and we are very close to having the personnel to fit it perfectly. We just need someone who actually knows how to coach an aggressive 3-4.
Actually Mangini has had coaching experience now. Unlike before. Also has 2 winning season under his belt, play-off appearance, years under Belichik's tutelage, SB rings as assistant. When we got him 3 years ago, I thought one problem was experience. Now that he actually gained that, while compiling a good resume in the process, we let him go. Woody is ruining team. First Chad, now Mangini. He is trying to find a scapegoat for what turned out to be a monumental season ruining mistake of releasing Chad outright to Miami and replacing him with Favre. What he is doing now is making another mistake by trying to cover up the first one. In the meantime, us fans are the ones that are going to pay the price.
Jim Schwartz.Another young d-minded DC.42 years old.Another apple off the BB tree from the Browns.Jeff Fisher guy. They play a 4-3. Josh McDaniels.Pats OC. Mike Sherman.Ex-Pack HC.Texas A&M HC.The Jets interviewed him 3 years ago. Mike Martz. I like Schwartz.
Oh yes, Jim Schwartz sounds like an excellent candidate. I'd be happy with him. After reading this, I want him even more: Schwartz got his start in the NFL doing research for Bill Belichick on the Cleveland Browns staff in the mid-1990s. Since then, he has continued to do work with Pro Football Prospectus and Football Outsiders founder Aaron Schatz, which has earned him a somewhat unique reputation among NFL coaches as a "Moneyball-style" statistical analyst.
Uh..yeah, that's what a few extra million a year does to you....stop pretending anything in the NFL, player or coach, is anything other than a job..it's not.
