When I threw out Spags's name, I didn't really think about it, I kind of just thought that he would be a big-time coach next year. Someone needs to take the fall for this collapse. I don't know if I want Mangini fired yet, and I haven't started looking for replacements yet, but thinking about it, I would much prefer a 3-4 guy again.
I'd rather have someone who is going to have the defense blitzing all day long. Spagnoulo seems like the type to do that... that's all I can ask.
Good point Cakes- I don't know enough about those assistants so I'll yield to you. If Woody and co. sit down and think a guy is the future for the organization, his defensive preference should not matter. I don't know enough about those guys to speak at length about their skills, but if Woody wants one of them, he's gotta take him. I agree with you about Cowher too.
Yup, I totally forgot about that hire. Still, there's an immense depth of talent in the NFL coaching ranks; it's a job that everyone wants and only 30 men can have, so there are always going to be qualified candidates out there waiting for a chance. If the Jets decide to keep Mangini, I should certainly hope it's because they figure that they can't do better.
This is exactly how I feel. I want someone with a more aggressive approach to defense and a more basic approach to offense. You don't need to have motion and shifting and odd formations on every play to be successful. I just want the next coach of the New York Jets to not run a play out of the shotgun on 3rd and 1. At least make them think you might run it.
Frazier has a fine pedigree. He started every game at right cornerback for the 1985 Bears. He also has a Super Bowl ring from the Colts. After that, he moved on to Minnesota. He's the defensive coordinator/assistant head coach. The Vikings are now the 3rd team in which Frazier helped take to the postseason (he was also on the Eagles staff from 99-02). Heck, he was with the Bengals for two years and they actually went .500 both seasons. Through the years, I have always heard his players especially enjoyed playing for him. Schwartz is considered to be one of the most intelligent assistant coaches in the league. He's been on the Titans staff since 1999 and Jeff Fisher is finally going to have to say goodbye to him soon. Schwartz has played a key role in the success of the Titans defense and there's no way he won't get a head coaching job. Todd Haley was a Jets assistant coach in 2000. He's another coach who is considered to be intelligent. His father, Dick, was a prominent personnel man back in the day.
I forget his name the Cardinals offense coordinator is suppossed to be a young up and coming prospect. Worked under Parcells so maybe he has a connection to Mike T. I don't think it'd be a bad idea to go after an offensive minded young head coach ala Sean Payton and bring in an experience DC.
Eh I somewhat disagree. Defense is key in the NFL and generally speaking defensive type coaches usually make better head coaches than offensive minded coaches do. The Saints didn't exactly light it up the last two years either. It's not a bad idea but I'd rather have a defensive guy with a mind for attacking.
Yes, he's been noted. His name is Todd Haley. I like your idea. Haley's been with the Jets before, albeit one season. He will get a head coaching job. It's just a matter of when and where. Why not next season with the Jets? Matt Raich is a defensive assistant for the Cardinals. (Clancy Pendergast is the Arizona defensive coordinator.) I don't know exactly what Raich does, but he's probably being molded to eventually become a defensive coordinator. The guy certainly knows about the 3-4 because prior to joining the Cardinals staff in 2007, he was with the Steelers from 2004-06. Prior to that he was in the college ranks. So Raich's been coaching 3-4 NFL defenses for five straight seasons. Todd Haley as Jets head coach and Matt Raich as defensive coordinator? It could happen.
I don't agree with that because there have been many good head coaches who had been offensive assistant coaches. Look at the Jets final defeats of 2008. Three of their four final losses were to head coaches who had offensive backgrounds (Shanahan, Holmgren, Sparano).
i think the main point is this......you loose this team worse than it is already if you clean house and start a new. You need a high caliber coach to turn this around, you won't get one because there is no QB to grab their attention.
As much as I detest Mangina, I wouldn't go that far... Pete Carroll was an interesting name to threw out there though living in SoCal, I know there is no way in hell he leaves SC for a 2nd go around with the Jets. Really though, right now I would take just about anyone over Mangini.
Realistically I know there's no way that Carroll leaves USC to try the NFL again, he's a God down there and really has very little to gain by going back to the big leagues. It couldn't hurt to offer him a truckload of money just for the hell of it though, it would be an amazing hire.
Carroll was recently quoted on 60 Minutes as saying getting fired by the Jets was the best thing that ever happened to him. Beyond Carroll, I don't think the Jets would hire a head coach from the college ranks. They need to go with a highly respected NFL coach. If they can't get a big name like Cowher, then they will have to do what the Dolphins, Ravens, and Falcons did and hire a "no name." The guy in my avatar is Leslie Frazier. I think he's the best and most realistic candidate to take over for Mangini. Frazier did interview for the Dolphins and Falcons jobs. The Rooney Rule may or may not have been utilized in both cases. It very well may have been in the Dolphins case because I think Bill Parcells was going Sparano all the way.
