I am pissed off, drunk, confused and still trying to put this season in perspective. Anyhow. Maybe we can sort things out. Is this the worst New York Jets collapse in team history? I am trying to remember a worse season, but I am having a difficult time doing so. Yeah, I know about the 1-15 under Kotite (watched every minute), and, it seems, a dozen 4-12 seasons. But I cannot remember a season that offered so much promise and ended in so much disappointment. Really, when the Jets were 8-3, I thought they were a lock for the playoffs. Yeah, there was 1999 when Vinny injured his ankle. The team that was coached by The Mighty Bill Parcells that was supposed to go to the SB went nowhere (mostly because he insisted on playing Rick Mirer instead of Ray Lucas). But that year, you knew the deck was stacked against the jets from the start. And there was the 1985 season, when the team went 10-1 and lost their last 5 games. But at least they made the playoffs and even won a game. (Paul McGuire made it all worse by predicting the end result of every game, of course!) Then there were the 1994 Pete Carroll Jets, who were 6-5, then lost their last five games to end up out of the playoffs. And the Bruce Coslet team from 1993 who lost their last three games. But the Jets weren't that good back then, so it didn't seem to hurt so bad. Then there were the Al Groh Jets in 2000. That guy inherited Parcells' team and (something Herm Edwards fans fail to remember) managed to lose the last three games of the season to fall out of the playoffs. That was totally disgraceful, but IMHO not as bad as this. Close, but no cigar. I am at a loss. But I am beginning to think that this is, indeed, the worst Jets collapse in team history. And I think that the only thing that could make it worse is if Woody Johnson retains this coaching staff.
I would say that the collapse after the "Spike Play" was worse but this one hurts more for some reason...
I think we were tied for 1st place at 6-6 going into the fake spike game with miami. after the fake spoke we lost last 4 games.. and then i think we went 3-33 or something
Yes. This was it. At least we made the playoffs in 1986. And we were little better than a .500 team going into the fake spike game. Words cannot derscribe how much I HATED this football season.
We were 6-5. We lost the last five to go 6-10, We went 4-28 the next two years. But I had a better time during the 1-15 season in 1996 than this year. I knew things were going to get better. Now, things are probably going to get worse.
I don't know if this was the worst collapse of all time, I definitely do think this was the worst winning record season of all time.
It was a pretty big collapse but we suck pretty bad on all levels so I don't think we would have done anything anyway. If average teams like the Bills, Seahawks and 49ers can expose us, a team like the Ravens... So its a collapse but for some reason it doesn't hurt that bad for me anyway. The Mets ones were a lot worse to me.
1986 actually. At least we made the playoffs then. No one has mentioned 1984: a 6-2 start and a 1-7 finish to end up at 7-9.
I have to go with these season, 1994 was bad, but this year we beat a team that had no losses on the road and everyone was saying we were going to the SB. What a joke this season turned out to be. Please fire Mangini
My bad. But on the other hand, was 1984 really worse than this season? When we had a Hall of Fame QB and all this free agent talent? My point is that this past season WAS the worst. And I can't wait to hear those magic words from Woody Johnson: "We have decided to go in a different direction next year."
I'm kinda scared to hear those words come from his mouth. Things could get much, much, much worse with a new identity, then again, things could get much, much, much better. I guess it is a roll of the dice. IMO.
This one's the worst for me. We drove from ATL to Nashville for the Titan game and I spent the drive home seeing visions of a SB dancing all the way down I-75. As a darksider and cynic, I saw the fundamental pieces there - and then they were all just mismanaged. Disgrace. What's worse is I'm not sure firing Mangini is the right move. The question is - is there somebody out there who will be better, recognizing that Mangini may still be on a learning curve (if Mangini's ego will let him learn and surround himself with seasoned coordinators). This just sucks.
I don't see how things could get much worse. Without talent, we were awful last year. With talent, we were awful with a decent record this year.
