"Top 10 WRs" just seems too short of a title. Either way same as the RB thread. I give mine, you give yours, we question eachothers, and have a jolly ol time. My Criteria: Production. Consistency. Playmaking. Explosiveness. Dependability. Chemistry. Off the field. #1- Marvin Harrison: Marvolous Marvin, IMO, is easily the best WR in the league right now. Granted he's old, but that just makes it more amazing. Some of the surest hands, if not THE surest, in the league. Top gun speed, great route running, and smarts. In the pass 7 years have all been 1000+ yards, 10+ TDs, 14+ 20yrd or more catches. Imagine a more athleticly talented Chris Chambers with a brain. #2- Randy Moss: Yes, the FREAK. Granted he had a wrecked season, and still got 1005 yards. He's avg a sick 16 ypc through his career. Health has never really been an issue except for last season when he got double teamed and pile drived. He can make up for a QB like no other WR. When a pass is off, short, long, he'll go to it and make it look like it was all perfect (See Culpepper). When your on the 20, one play, who you want? A corner jump ball to Moss, easy. No one can jump with this 6'4 freak. You can argue a bad case of dependability and chemistry, true. But his bad side usually comes out when the games already lost, he doesn't make it a lost. #3- Terrel Owens: TO. The most physical WR in the league. The reason why WRs have a break tackle rating in Madden. Can make something good into something great. People might make a case for him being #1 "When he's on the field", but he can't GET on the field! People might consider that off-field issues, I don't. The Love Boat is off field, a DUI is off field, Drug Chargers are off field. When you piss on your coach and he walks onto the field and you don't, that's dependability and chemistry. Last chance in big D, TO. #4- Torry Holt: Poor Holt has had 6 or 7(maybe more) QBs throwing him the ball throughout his career. This past season he had Marc Bulger, Jamie Martin and Ryan Fitzpatrick, yuck! But he's still put up 1300+ yards the past SIX seasons. If he actually had a premire QB, he'd be like a mini-Marvin. Big-Play-Holt is just that, with 147 20+yrd grabs in just 7 seasons. That's 21 per season, higher than all the top 3. Was #1 WR in 2003. #5- Chad Johnson: Use to be my personal favorite before this season, now he's everyone's personal favorite. Besides what you may think, he's a real student of the game. Spends endless hours studing game film, many times sleeping over at the Bengals training facility. With out the Media influence, his production earns him a top 5 spot. If he wants to get any higher he will need to dominate all other WRs on the field. He only broke into the top 3 WRs (in yards) this year. Was quitely here at #5 all along, even before his celebrations. But even with them, I still feel that this is where he stays. #6- Steve Smith: The future clearly belongs to him and CJ. However a frail 5'9 185lbs frame that cost him the 2004 season leaves him out of the top 5. Yes, he was the #1 WR last year. He had the most explosive and most productive season than any other wide, but again, with only two 1000+ yard seasons he's going to have to still prove he can produce year in and year out if he wants to move up. #7- Hines Ward: Who says possession WRs can't be great? This guy is there in the clutch, and he can explode too. As Pitt WRs begin to be stripped away, first Plax, now Randel El, they know who to keep. Super Bowl MVP, Ward. No better attitude in the NFL. Makes everyone around him better. Big reason for Big Ben developing the way he has. Sadly he got the rough side of fortune with Maddox, and an inexperience Ben. When Ben hits his prime (IMO, he hasn't) it might be too late for Ward. #8- Joe Horn: The guy everyone has forgotten. I think it's more than fair to not count last season for any Saint, really. 2004, he was explosive falling short and being in the shadow of the rejovinated Muhammad by only 6 yards. Still, this guy is one of the few motors that keeps the Saints above water, and stays healthier than most NFL WRs, missing only 4 games in NO. #9- Anquan Boldin: With a record setting rookie season and the best comeback from a sophmore slump you can possibly ask for he's proven himself. Great talent, and skill, and he will only get better. 1402 yards last season with a Holt avg of 21 20+yard catches. This kid has yet to reach his full potential and will be a cornerstone for AZ for years to come. If they can actually get themselves a premier QB (please don't be a bust Cutler), you will see this guy on the top of the chart for years. #10- Isaac Bruce: The diffinition of Veteran. Like Holt, he was on a QB carousel last year, only he doesn't have youth to make lemonade out of lemons anymore. Still, IMO, a top 10 guy. Big part of Holts rise, and the Rams being the offensive powerhouse their known as. (or were known as). A top 5 WR just two years ago. Give him a stable QB, not even a good one just a stable one, and he's locked for 1000. Makes everyone around him better and is totally selfless. Old school and complete opposite of today pre-Modonna WRs. My hat goes off to you Bruce.
YES, i LOVE the fact that you have marvin at number1, people say im crazy for saying that. Otherwise i think it's a great list, but TO is number 2 without all of the extra bullshit
List looks good, I would have Fitzgerald over Bruce and Bolden before Horn, but that looks good otherwise. Thank you for not putting Santana Moss on that list, because he is definetly not a top 10 reciever, he's a top 10 reciever in the right system.
Great analysis. My only disagreement is that health has been a concern for Moss for more than the last year, but I still wouldn't label him as injury prone.
I have Torry Holt as my number one. He is the All-around best WR in the game in my opinion. Plus he isn't an asshole like most of the WR's in the NFL. Just look at his incredible consistency since being drafted. The numbers speak for themselves.
Same thing with Marvin Harrison, he's not an ass-hole either and has put up great numbers since he came into the league. Keep in mind that the Rams also play in a very pass-friendly offense so Holt is going to get a lot more oppurtunities to make big plays and add to his stats.
1. Marvin Harrison- Production wise over his career and even today his productivity rules over the rest. 2. Randy Moss- Still the man, if he can get healthy. 3. Chad Jackson- A true gamer and no matter how much smack he talks he always shows up on the field. The Rasheed Wallace of football, only better. 4. Steve Smith- When the Bears gameplan is "Stop Steve Smith" and he still burns them a few times you know he's elite. 5. Terrell Owens- IMO he is the most talented receiver in the game but his big head, big mouth, and overall arrogance bring him down. 6. Rod Smith- The most underrated player in NFL history 7. Torry Holt- Good, fast WR but is overrated because he plays on "The Fastest Show on Turf." Makes a great #1 option but is only on the borderline of being elite 8. Hines Ward- Great WR and always seems to know when to get the big catch. His arm is pretty good for those WR passes too. 9. Anquan Boldin- 259 catches in his first 3 seasons is amazing... and even more amazing he was injured for part of the 2004 season. He and #10 are going to go down as the best duo of all time in a few years. 10. Larry Fitzgerald- A little byast here because I love the guy but he's great and has drawn comparisons to Chris Carter, while backing them up 161 catches and 18 TDs over 2 seasons. Honorable Mentions: Santana Moss, Joe Horn, Issac Bruce, Laveranues Coles, Donald Driver
I would definately have Chad Johnson at #3, hes been putting up good numbers even before Carson Palmer came to town.
I agree with this COMPLETELY..especially about CJ...I feel exactly the same way...except he still is my fave WR (he and donald driver, both great guys)
about Rod Smith, Yes you are correct. I'm surprised you recognized DD  nice job....but no walker?
True but who would you take out? TO? Chad is great, and the future of the NFL is having Holt, Chad, and Steve locking up the top 3 spots. BUT as of right now the elite stand as MM, Moss, and TO. Chad has been putting up GOOD numbers. GOOD. Top 3 is more than good. And he's yet to outshine all other NFL WRs, on the field. He has clearly done that in the media. Donnie, your right about Rod Smith. I was really looking for a way to put him into my top 10, but I just couldn't find it. I will still take any of my top 10 over him. He would've been on the top of my honorable mentions list had I made one. I strongly disagree with Holt at #7. IMO, he's the next in line after the Elite 3, and has already one foot inside that Elite Group.
You're talking about the #2 and #5 WRs of 2004. Receiving Yds 1. M. Muhammad CAR 1405 2. J. Horn NO 1399 3. J. Walker GB 1382 4. T. Holt STL 1372 5. I. Bruce STL 1292 So they didn't match their performances of 2004 in the 2005 season. IMO, that doesn't mean their washed up. However, I do believe that they now depend on their QB a lot more than they use to, and probably a lot more than any of the other Top 10. But that still doesn't make them washed up. I'm not saying they need a Manning or Brady or Palmer to be good, that's just silly. Just an average QB, they'll give you the numbers. On J. Walker. Yea I considered him but turned him down. He's had only one good season, and it wasn't even steller. He needs to stay healthy, AND produce if he wants to make that list. It is becusae of a one-season-wonders like Walker that I make consistency a big part when judging. Not saying he'll never get a good season again, I think he will. But he hasn't yet. Seriously, look at his career, do you really think that is a Top 10 career? http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/302233
1. Marvin Harrison 2. Randy Moss 3. Terrell Owens 4. Steve Smith 5. Chad Johnson 6. Torry holt 7. Anquan Boldin 8. Hines Ward 9. Joe Horn 10. Santanna Moss
1.Randy Moss Size, speed and toughness. You can't ask for anything more than that. His route running could be better but it's not that important when you can out jump, out run and out-muscle the guy covering you.His character is a concern but it would only come into play if this list were about the top ten WR's I'd want on this team. The guy is 2 TD's shy from 100.Thats almost 100 in 8 years. 2.Terrel Owens Very similar to Moss except isn't as tall and as good a deep threat(although probably more dangerous after the catch).I went with Moss as the number 1 WR as i feel he can cause more problems for defenses than Owens can,Owens is a threat when he has the ball but it's tougher to stop Moss from getting the ball. 3.Chad Johnson. A very tough player with enough speed to be a threat down the field too.Plays with a higher motor than the two above him although isn't as physical meaning he isn't as good in the red zone. 4.Tory Holt As someone else mentioned,Holt has had 6 straight back to back 1300+ yard seasons.I believe no other WR currently playing can even come near that.Holt runs fantastic routes and has great speed to.Not as physical as those mention above him and probably benefits from playing in a pass happy offense. 5.Steve Smith Explosive player who plays bigger than he has actually is.His lack of size hurts him.He won't be as good a red-zone threat as those mentioned above but the guy is a playmaker who causes problems for defenses.Attitude is a concern 6.Marvin Harrison Harrison is very overrated in my book,i hate his lack of his toughness and can be shutdown by a physical CB.He runs great routes and has great speed, but i prefer my WR's to be tough and to show up in big games. 7.Hines Ward Does the little things well, great blocker, great route runner and great at finding the soft spots in the zone.Good enough speed to be an all round receiver. It would be interesting to see what he could do in a pass happy offense like Harrison and Holt. 8.Rod Smith Very consistent player with 9 1000 yard seasons out of the last 10 seasons.Good route running, great hands, smart player and great motor.Isn't as big a play maker as others but can kill you quietly. 9.Jimmy Smith Two smiths in a row and two players with 9 1000 yard seasons out of 10.Doesn't run as great routes and doesn't have as good a motor as Rod but is more physical. 10.Anquan Boldin I don't know much about Boldin but i get the impression he does everything well. He's not the fastest,or the biggest,or runs the best routes but he has enough pace, size and...er...route running ability to do the job.I think he's meant to have great hands. Just missed... Chris Chambers just misses out simply because he's only had one great season. If he repeats this season then he should leapfrog into 8th place. Joe Horn and Andre Johnson suffered poor seasons last year (although is understandable with the Texans and Saints problems).Horn is a good player although plays with a great fantasy QB in Brooks.Johnson needs to regain his 2004 form.
I'll explain as requested, but my list goes: (My criteria: playmaking, consistency/dependability, in-game dominance) 1. Terrell Owens 2. Randy Moss 3. Marvin Harrison 4. Steve Smith 5. Torry Holt 6. Chad Johnson 7. Hines Ward 8. Chris Chambers 9a. Anquan Boldin 9b. Larry Fitzgerald 11. Santana Moss
^^ Respectable list TEN. I really like how you got both Rod and Jimmy in there. Very good. Only real disagreement is ofcourse with Marvin. Not even top 5? You question his toughness? Granted he might not be TO tough, but he's tougher than Moss, physically speaking. Not to mention he's the toughest WR in the game mentally.
Harrison is always ducking out of bounds or hitting the deck before the big hit. He's always catching the ball in space and is never forced to out muscle the defender or take a big hit from a safety.Plus the guy just disapears in big games. He's a very good player but i think he benifits from playing with Manning and for playing with him for so long. They've got a great understanding, pretty much every other WR has had to go through a change of QB.
