First off, he is not as great as you guys think he is. I go to University of Maryland and saw him in every game. He is also a below average blocker. But most importantly, tight end is probably the least important starting position in all of the NFL (except special teams players). Do any of the elite teams have great tight ends? Not really, and the teams that have the best tight ends even have trouble making the playoffs like the Chargers and Chiefs. To me, the most important thing that a tight end can provide a team with is run blocking, not playmaking ability.
I would love too get Davis if we could get him at #29 or #35. Good TE's get you first downs and short field TDs. They are a big a help to alot of teams, you don't need to only catch 50 yards bombs to be important.
Well said. TE is strictly a luxury position and a good TE should be a good blocker. Taking Vernon Davis would be a horrible decision. I garuntee that if he didn't run a 4.38, nobody on this board would be asking for him. He may be a good TE, but he's a workout warrior.
Who the hell were you watching? The first time I ever saw Vernon Davis on the field, I thought he was a huge WR. I thought, this guy is gonna be special. I know it won't translate to the NFL but there were times when college players were simply incapable of tackling him. He catches everything that comes his way, he can juke, hurdle, break tackles even when he's wrapped up. He's not a bad blocker--he's no Anthony Becht but he is hella strong and has the second highest strength index on his team. Now I don't think TE is a very important position and I don't think we should take one with the fourth pick. But I'm not a person who lives and dies by the draft either, and if the Jets took my favorite college player and one of the top talents this year, I would not complain.
A couple things here. Using the Chargers/Chiefs failures is not a good argument when the reasons for their struggles is unfair. Mediocore defenses are the reason for that. Both teams have elite offenses. The Broncos and Giants have also shown that you can win a super bowl with a TE as your biggest receiving threat. History has shown us more than enough times that there are plenty of ways to build a super bowl winner. I personally don't think Davis is worth pick #4, but he is the best receiving threat in the draft and will be a very good player.
i concur.. Davis ain't even that good, and if the Jets took another tight end, I would break something on draft day
VD would just score TD after TD.. Obviously not at the 4 but a trade down and then getting an impact de or olb like Lawson or Carpenter and then a tackle like wiston or McNeil. and then best avabile running back after that. one word sick
The kid runs a 4.38, can catch, can break tackles. Despite what the people above are saying, he most certainly can block. Having him on a team would mean that the safety would likely have to cover him, thus leaving Coles one on one alot more. I like him, I wouldnt complain if we drafted him
thats outstanding that he ran a 4.38, but seriously who cares. He really didnt have that great of a college career to begin with, but he's a good sprinter i guess, big deal. You are right though, a safety might have to guard him, leaving Coles one on on alot, but who's going to throw it to them? who's going to block so they have enough time to get open so someone can get them the ball? Tight end is a luxury position. If we were on the brink of the playoffs, sure adding Davis might be sweet, could put us over the top perhaps, but we are not, we are rebuilding and you don't rebuild around a TE. (Besides we blew our chance at a decent TE last year -see Heath Miller and his superbowl ring).
I don't know. You look at Heath Miller (PITT), Antonio Gates (SD), Shockey (NYG), Chris Cooley (WASH). TE is becoming pretty big I think. Of course drafting a TE in the first is pretty risky. I like Davis though.
Eh, youre wrong. If you have such a problem because his position is TE, then view him as a WR if it will make you feel better then, because he'll give you WR numbers. Chargers and Chiefs didnt make the playoffs because they were in a tough division, not because their TEs didnt contribute. Hmm, Chiefs went 10-6 and are basically playoffs contenders every year. Chargers went from the laughing stock of the NFL to one of the more feared teams in the NFL in 2 years. Dont try to make it seem like they didnt make the playoffs because of their TEs. same exact thing can be said about Mario Williams... Last year in 11 games played 51 receptions 871 yards 17.1 avg 73 longest reception 6 tds looks like the stats of a sucky player to me(sarcasm) seriously though, why does it bug people soo much that hes a TE. Would we be having this argument if he was a WR? I bet people have no prob taking an awesome WR in the top 5. Would you be pissed to draft a WR who is 6'3 256 lbs and runs a 4.38 and has great hands? I dont care if a player is a FB, if he can put up monster numbers and help out the offense in a major way, who am i to give a damn what hes labeled.
Hmm Let's see As others have said, you have a WR with a TE's body and a TE's strength His problems as far as blocking is concerned are technique, not lack of ability Having him at TE makes our WR's much better. We have no playmakers on offense people. We have competent players but no one who the defense is concerned about. When and where are we going to get that player from? We have the 4th pick in the draft. If Williams is taken, I wouldn't mind at all if the Jets went for Davis. This draft is not deep with offensive playmakers IMHO. It is deep with Offensive Linemen and Defensive Linemen. Vernon Davis comes around how many times? It all depends on how the Jets view him.... Do they see him as a difference maker? If so, then considering how little of that is available, why not take him.... I believe the returns will be better than picking an offensive linemen in that spot. And I would pick him only if Williams is no longer available.
Here's my reply that no one seemed to read from another thread: I'd like to see where all of the guys clammoring for Heath Miller last year (before our trade) are now. I understand that this situation is different (with a much higher draft choice at stake), but in order to disagree, I don't understand why people need to use hyperbole's such as "TE is the least important position" and "the Jets can never draft a TE in the first round because of history". First of all, yes, the Jets have had bad luck with TE's in the past. I don't see why past luck in the draft should affect our current draft choices. I don't care if Kyle Brady and Becht were not what we were expecting, that was no one on this current team's fault. Give it up already. Second, just because some teams don't utilize a tight end doesn't mean that a TE is unimportant in general. If a good TE's full potential is realized, they can drive an offense forward, taking coverage off of the WR's to open them up more. It makes for a much more even passing game, and one which could greatly benefit our system. Not only that, but our protection for the quarterback increases with a good blocking TE. Davis can bring the full package and then some. An argument in the other thread was made saying that even the best TE's weren't up with the best WR's in yards. Well gesss what, they do more than just recieve! If Super Mario is off the board, I see no reason why not to draft Davis. He will most likely be gone by pick 6 regardless, only 2 picks lower than us. It's not much of a reach, if any at all. Many boards have him ranked 4-7. Anyone who thinks that Jones is good enough at LT should love this pick if Mario is off the board. If you think that D'Brick is the next Orlando Pace than I understand your argument, but otherwise this man can change an offense. Has anyone else seen him play? The man is a beast, and I loved him since way before the combine. If you haven't or are not sold, watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kq5g7O9YvwQ&search=vernon%20davis The man has great hands, is a good blocker with all the tools to become elite, and is supposedly also a class act. Like I said, if the Saints take Mario and Leinart is gone, he's my pick.
whoever said they went to Maryland and thinks Vernon Davis is avg is insane. I'm an FSU fan so ive seen alot of him prolly alot less than someone who actually went to Maryland though But honestly, Marlyand has been a avg team the last few yrs, and the only person to be mentioned in a Marlyand uniform is Vernon Davis. And people wow'd over him long before the combine. This same person who made the comment about his blocking was correct though. He needs work on his blocking, but then again hes not a prototype TE. If Vernon Davis had solid blocking hed be one of the best overall players available this yr. I know why people are complaining though, at this point Vernon Davis is moreso a player of intrigue to talk about instead of actually seeing in a Jets uni cuz TE is the last of our worries. But to try to say he is not a good player to shut people up is stupid. He's a strong player with great hands and speed, but what will make him succeed on the next level is his engine. He is a nonstop meanstreak player who will be dishing out blows as a rookie. plain an simple. with all that being said taking him would be a waste of a pick considering how many other positions need to be addressed.
We have a competent players but no standouts I see no standouts at Wide Receiver in this draft and as far as RB is concerned. There might be 2 who are NFL stars, and the rest will probably be just part of the mix. With that being said Baker is competent, but he will never be a Vernon Davis. I want a playmaker on this offense I think he is the best player that will be available. I just hate spending so much on an OT. It's needed, but damn that is alot of money for someone who doesn't score touchdowns.
I'm a firm believer that offensive line is the most important piece of the rebuilding puzzle. 1) I don't care how many offensive playmakers you have, if the line doesn't give the QB time to read the defense, go through his progressions, and make a throw he will be killed. If the line can't open up some holes for the running game, this magnifies the issue. (3 injured QB's, 2 injured RB's last season) A phenomenal TE who isn't a good blocker is not going to help correct this issue. 2) When your QB's are getting killed and the running game is getting stuffed, that leads to a lot of 3 and outs. This leads to a huge time of possession advantage for the other team. No matter how good our defense is, they will end up tired towards the end of the game - this will be more visible as the season gets older. That being said, the best defensive player in the draft doesn't immediately help solve any problems either if we don't fix the O-line. 3) At the very least, we need an offense that can control the clock and get first downs consistantly so that the defense isn't hung out to dry. A good o-line is the most important aspect of a ball control offense. A smart QB is second IMO. 4) I know some people want to respond with the TE is a QB's best friend when he needs a quick dump off. Agreed, but Baker or Jolley can catch a 5 yard dump pass just as well as any TE in the draft. If we draft a TE in the first round, I'll stab myself in the right eye with a pencil.
