I know Mangini is being hated on right now. I can't blame fans. But in my opinion he really has made mostly sound decisions this season. Here's where I'd make moves Schotty out --> Callahan in Sutton out --> Rob Ryan in I don't mind Mangini's inexperience, because he is well disciplined, but for Schotty making all the calls..... I think he just needs much more time. Rob Ryan has the experience in addition to the pedigree. Does anyone know if he'll finally be available after this season? Go Jets!
GOD FUCKING DAMNIT!! not rob ryan. we have had this discussion several times. Ryan has actually coached horrendous defenses the last few years in Oakland. His defense had one solid year under his tenure, 4 years ago. NO ONE should be taking a coach off the Oakland coaching tree. I am a firm believer that just about anyone other than Sutton is an upgrade, but Rob Ryan would not be. Hell i would rather see us promote Bryan Cox to be our DC than Rob Ryan, besides he actually wants to stay in Oakland
The Jets had one good coach in the last 20 years and that was Parcells. The fact that anyone "hates on him" is crazy. I KNEW that the Fins would win 8-10 this year. THere was no way with him pulling the string that they wouldnt. We need someone with credentials. Cowher.
K...everyone is Cowher crazy, but how long did it take him to win a SB with Pit? And you're going to throw Mangini under the bus after less than 3 seasons, after he inherited a HERM-EDWARDS TEAM?!?!?!?!?!?! Okay.
The coaching problems start at the top. It may very well be true that Schottenheimer and Sutton are the schemers that are failing so epically, but if that actually is true then it is Mangini who has allowed it to go on all season long.
Realistically, at this point. The fact Fact that Herm was our "previous" coach has nothing to do with the fact that we were 8-3 before thanksgiving and then shit the bed. I wanted Herm out at the end, and he was a terrible coach, but more or less he got the same results if not better during his tenure.
I see what you're saying, but one disadvantage of being a young head coach is that your "tree" is still relatively small because you've had less time to work with different coaches. So, if Sutton and Schotty were the best options that Mangini has had to work with the past couple of years then you work with them. Mangini got Callahan when he became available, before that Tony Wise was our o-line coach. Consistency is very important and firing either of these coordinators in favor of someone you might not really want (Bryan Cox as D coord, according to a former poster's assanine suggestion) would be tantamount to throwing away the season, imo. Get Rob Ryan and give Callahan a chance to run it for a full season.
Right, it doesn't change that fact. But if we win vs. Miami and Mangini led this team to two 10-win seasons in three years, i think that speaks louder than Herm bringing us to the playoffs in 3-of-5 years after being handed a BILL PARCELLS coached team. I mean, he walked into a great situation. Look how he's performed after walking into a situation with adversity in KC.
you cannot hire Rob Ryan to be the defensive coordinator unless he gets fired and is on the open market.
I wasn't aware of his contract situation, but I thought there was a chance it expired after this season. Thanks for the info.
I'm sorry, with lesser talent I would buy that. I gave Mangini a huge pass last year because I felt the talent simply wasn't there. This year, the talent is there and in all the right spots. We've got veterans and guys who have won Super Bowls before, guys that know what it takes. Mangini's philosophy is to implement a scheme and be consistent with it. No matter how much it isn't working, stick with it until it does work. For a while, it was working, but then went right back to not working. It cost us the season. This isn't Baseball where teams can go into slumps and just keep at it until they come out of it. Football requires thinking on the fly, flexibility, adjustment. And while you could say that Mangini's tenacity is a positive trait, I personally think it is a huge downfall. I don't believe consistent winning in football comes from consistently running a bad scheme. I think it comes from having a winning mindset that involves having your team go out there and do WHATEVER it takes with what you've got to pick up the wins. We had an insanely easy schedule this year but somehow we dropped the ball against all the easy teams. The Titans game showed what this team is capable of doing. The Raiders, 49ers, and Seahawks games showed the true colors of this philosophy. The only way we will ever win a Super Bowl under Mangini is if he changes his ways. His philosophy doesn't permit that. Hence, I don't see anything ever happening while he is coach. Maybe he needs some time off to think about it and adjust his attitude. That will only come with getting fired and going back to the coordinator level ranks for a while, and earning enough trust and good will by doing such a good job that another team takes a flier on him. It won't happen with the Jets.
If that's the case then yes you can get him, but for some reason I was sure he was signed thru next year. I thought that happened this past offseason...ugh..I'm not sure then.
Ryan signed a 3 year extension in 2006. That probably runs out after this season. Sorry about the confusion. Maybe we could go and get him, but I think Al Davis loves him. Who knows.
oh you mean the one that completely opted to defend the pass with everything they had, while we ran the ball down their throats, then inexcusably stopped running the ball? If we just ran the ball 20 times in a row (ring a bell Jets fans?) we would have simply walked up and down the field on the raiders, just like we would have against the niners, the seahawks, and we were already doing it against the Broncos. Why we stop running and pass the ball i have no idea, but that choice cost us games this season, including Oakland, Seattle and San Fran. if not the Denver game as well.
Okay, so Mangini gets this team to 9 or 10 wins this season. In your opinion, how many wins do we get this season with a better head coach, considering that: -while they were better players 2/5 of the O-line was brand new. -the new starting quarterback showed up in August We did great in our division this year. We did great versus the Titans. We had some stinkers elsewhere, seriously bad games, but I don't know how consistent of a team you can expect when the most cohesive unit (o-line) on the field is in their first season together and the QB thing and the generally large amount of new players. This team was completely different from last year. I mean, I'm clearly trying to see the bright side, but it's easy to call for the guys head when these losses come so late in the season. Maybe we just weren't ready this year.
mangini & co has to go...he was an inexperienced product of a belichick system. Yes, we did well in our division and a win's a win, but we lucked out against the dolphins (game 1); the recent pats game; and the recent bills game either rex ryan or mike westhoff as head coach callahan as OC wade phillips as DC
