I am a Bill Parcell, Jimmy Johnson or Bill Cowher kind of guy. I want my coach involved and antimated. Nothing like a coach grabbing a player by the jersey and screamong in their face at the top of their lungs. A coach who just stands their and shows no emotion is anything but a motivator. I also like coaches who scream and get very emotional with the refs.
not only does Mangini not show any emotion, it doesn't even look like hes thinking while hes standing there with his fist against his chin. Westhoff looked animated today limping around with a cane.
A GOOD ONE!!!!!1!!111 LOL!!! No, but really a smart dude that can't stand to lose but knows that a loss happens. We have that, but fans are fans.
I personally think that the sideline demeanor of a coach is vastly overrated and overvalued. I want a coach who knows how to gameplan, manage a game with wise in-game decisions, and motivate his players. Case closed.
I like a coach thats winning. All that stuff is BS if you ask me. You don't need to yell and scream on the sideline to be in control and discipline your players. A coach like mangini plays it cool which is good. Ther are many highs and lows in this game and during the season. If your coach stays even keel throughout it lets the players know that when things are bad they arent that bad and when things are good they aren't that good. I beleive it's more important how he acts in the locker room, the week leading up to the game, and how he calls a game rather than to how he acts on the sideline. If you are going to question mangini thats where you should start.
I think Herm is the epitome of a "fired-up" coach. Big huge motivational speeches, great soundbites for the media, and crappy coaching. Beli-cheat, on the other hand, always stands around with a scowl on his face. I've never seen the man smile, nor have I seen him yell. But, as much as it pains me to say it, he's the best NFL coach in ages.
I honestly dont care what type of emotion they show on the sidelines as long as they get their guys to perform. I just am not pleased when you see your coach looking blank faced completely confused and totally lost ala edwards. I want a coach who gets his players to give 200% and then when they need a play, he has them so well coached, somehow someway they find a way to consistently get it done for him.
Did you compare Belichick and Coughlin??? They are at opposite ends of the spectrum. Belichick is angry faced and even keel while Coughlin is an emotional roller coaster.
Those top five names I made refrence to all have SB rings. Look at the success the more antimated coaches have had. Even Don Shula was annitmated, especially in the early years.
I want a guy the way I am. I've player/coached teams and i wasn't quiet, and I was up and down sidelines making sure defenses were tight and the direction was never run off course.... went a championship, but lost to a team that was unfairly dominant, but gave them their lowest margin of victory all season. There was never an unconfident time, or inconsistency. There was always passion, ever single game. Thats the coaches I love. I know Mangini isn't like that, and that's fine. But if ever were to pick a dude, thats the guy i'd pick.
that's why I get so crazy about the pussy defense... I don't play on teams that play scared. If my team can't out physical yours - then hopefully we can outrun you - if not, then its game where the tempo and crowd have to be controlled before anything else. Take one aspect of the game, own it, and then move on to the next one to master. If we aren't that good, then you fight like bunch of crazed dogs and play mind games with the other team. there are ways to win, you find them. This applies to all sports, not just football. I really want to sig that quote. lol
The coaches that show the most emotion also have the most all around knowlege. Parcels, Belichick, Coughlin and Cowher are defensive guys but all can run the offensive and call plays as well as coach the ST units. Parcells is one of the best ST coach around. When our offense is on the field, Mangini looks lost.
I can understand wanting players to be fired up, but I prefer my coaches to be cool and calculating. Emotion clouds judgment. Get too upset, and you make a rash or unwise decision. This is not to say that you can't make a wrong decision while you're calm... but those are errors of calculation, not of passion. Of course, there is something satisfying about watching a coach scream at players when I'm angry at players, too, but I'd much much rather see my team have a better chance of winning (due to making sound decisions) than to see a coach all fired up and possibly botching something.
How about one who wins Super Bowls? We haven't had one of those in my lifetime and I'm just about 40. That's the kind of coach I like on the sideline.
