I'm guessing Sutton is calling the defensive plays on gameday but how isn't Mangini watching game film during the week and ordering Sutton to stop calling this formation. I have never seen a team basically run a prevent defense for the majority of the game. This has to be the worst strategy I have ever seen in a football game, it hasn't worked at all this year yet we still run it so often this late in the year. Any casual football fan knows if you give any QB all day in the pocket he will find someone eventually. Any casual fan also knows the way to mask a suspect secondary is by pressuring the QB not giving him all day to throw the ball. This is completely mind boggling to me, I'm not asking for all out blitz on every play, just a basic 4, 5 man rush. We are getting pressure when we rush 4 or 5 guys, then the next play we drop 8 into coverage and give up a big play. I would put this at the top of the list as far as changes needing to be made in order to finish out the season strong. Followed closely by running the ball more and better production out of the passing game.
The CS just doesn't have any other way to mask the secondary's weaknesses. Their only answer is rush 3 drop 8. We can't play man coverage because everyone in our secondary outside of Revis is slow as molasses; and at the same time we get no passrush because of the stupid 3 man rush. We end up playing stupid cover 2 zone (which is vulnerable down the middle of the field) and which can be easily disected by your average NFL QB because someone will always get open eventually if there's no pressure. Mangini and Sutton probably realize this isn't working, and are playing percentages. If we rush 4 or 5 there will be pressure and QB will be more prone to a mistake but someone WILL be open because we have guys like Drew Coleman and Dwight Lowery trying to cover guys. They are trying to play it safe by dropping an extra guy into coverage but it clearly doesn't f*ckin' work. I'd much rather rush 4 or 5 and get a big play or a 3&OUT, occasionally giving up a big gainer, than watch the opposition carve us up drive after drive. Hopefully our next DC has some brighter ideas, and we bring in some real DBs too.
I agree with everything. It's amazing that we could be this vulnerable in the secondary especially with a Pro Bowl caliber player (Revis) at CB and a used-to-be Pro Bowl caliber player (Rhodes) at Safety. Just goes to show how bad the other guys are. Lowery and Coleman are a train wreck I agree.
they say pressure does bust pipes.. but our d is like letting a hydrant flow.. god dammit blitz someone..
There's a reason that KC was able to stifle Denver...they don't sit back and let Cutler get comfortable. Doesn't matter how week the secondary is...you have the play inside out...in other words, take away the short throw, the quick throw, the QB's safety valve option...force him to hold onto the ball for another second or two and give your 7, or 8 man blitz a chance to get there. Also, the Jets need to send these guys in waves...ala Pittsburgh's zone blitz...the Jets rush everybody right away and the lanes aren't open yet. Let the first wave create some movement in the offensive line, then second the second wave through the holes.
I saw a lot of blitzing yesterday. In fact that's all Bryan Thomas did. They just aren't getting to the QB.
I saw Gholston tryinig to rush in a couple of times; just pathetic! He could be Sapp's next Dancing With the Stars partner.
To me it's when they dial it up... perfect example is having SF deep, they dial it up on first down, great.Sack, and a 2nd and 12, OBVIOUS passing down, they rush three, play an 8 man zone... completion in the middle and a first down. They are so inconsistent, from drive to drive, on putting pressure on. And when we do blitz, how many corner blitzes do we bring? They are useless. Feels like Rhodes hasn't blitzed in 4 weeks. He should be hovering around the LOS like Polamalu. Yet he is consistently 15-20 yards off the ball. Sutton is awful. He has no idea how to disrupt what a team is doing to the defense. Week in and week out. No adjustments. No creativity. We were winning games getting ahead in those other games, and holding on. Seems like the last two weeks, if a team gets to us early on offense, we will not have an answer for them all day. Sutton really needs to go.
Thank you. I was beginning to think no one actually even watched the game. They blitzed all damn day. The players just sucked. That's not Sutton's fault.
Rushing Bryan Thomas is not blitzing, when it is a four man rush. He is an outside backer in a 3-4. They rushed Pace all day as well, as part of 3 and 4 man rushes. That is not a blitz, especially when said players line up in a down position, as pace and BT did quite often. And the problem, in my opinion, is not how much he blitzes, its when he dials it up, (down and situation) and the type of blitz he dials up. There is no creativity. There is no disguising who is coming. When they zone blitzed Harris today, I could tell pretty much every presnap that he was coming. Now if I can do that, don't you think an NFL qb can?
