2007 New York Giants Regular Season (10-6) -Lost first 2 games, Won next 6 games -In their last 8 games they went 4-4 with some ugly double digit losses, and a couple of close wins -It took them until week 17 to establish confidence within themselves that they could win a championship --> look where that confidence took them when nobody believed they would make it out of the first round 2006 Indianapolis Colts Regular Season (12-4) -Won their first 9 games -In their last 7 games they went 3-4 and instead of having the #1 seed they were destined for after 9 games they dropped down to #3 -2 of the games they lost were back to back losses versus inferior opponents in week 13 and 14... sound familiar? 2005 Pittsburgh Steelers Regular Season (11-5) -Started off the regular season with a mediocre 3-2 record -Ripped off 4 straight wins -Immediately following the emotional high of winning 4 straight big games, they dropped 3 in a row (sound somewhat familar...?) -They bounced back from the slide to win their last 4 and use this momentum towards the playoffs What we can learn from this? -We have 3 big games on the road this season (@Buf, @NE, @Ten). Someone please try to convince me that we got lucky 3 times on the road this year? -Momentum can be built at anytime during the season, as long as the team shows that there is an essence of a capable of group. -You do not need the number one seed, a first round bye, or a division title to win the superbowl. -You'd rather lose now then in February ats_suck: -This season is not over, the new york jets are not over, and there is no reason to lose hope.
No one can predict the future, and judging by the way the Jets have played the last 2 games, I think it's safe to say that this season is lost. Is there still a chance we'll make the playoffs? Sure, of course. A chance we'll get to the Super Bowl? Highly unlikely. One thing's for certain, I'm not going to stop rooting for this team. I've never missed a down and I'm not going to start now.
Great points here. I think everyone needs to chill (myself included), and just hope we gain some momentun next week. While I don't think we're a great team, it's not hard to build momentum with one big win.
Great point. Who the fuck were the new york giants until they played a close game versus the new england patriots on week 17 and STILL LOST! nothing.. and look what blossomed from that.
You're using stats from previous seasons. I understand the point you're trying to make. But this season is completely different. All divisions are more competitive, records are different. Ask any team who's not the Giants in the NFC East if they think they're getting in with a 10-6 record.
I see what you're saying here, and yes you are right - this is a different season. However, the point of my post was not exactly to show numerical statistics, but more to show the general trends of a football season (a championship football season) and how there are big bumps along the road, there is never a perfect team, and as much as it pains me to say it, it almost seems necessary that a good team must get smacked around by an inferior team for them to refocus. NFL teams (all sports in general) tend to thrive on that "us against the world" mentality, and it just shows that 2 losses is something this team can overcome.
I hope you're right. I really thought this team got it together when they got beat up by Oakland. Even they said it was a wake up call, but apparently they hit the snooze button, because they got beat up by DEN, and SF after that. Who knows though, we could turn around and be the Giants of next year, similar to what they've done over the course of the past two seasons.
The season is over. This is a bullshit team with no heart and crap coaching. Mangini is an absolute fraud and should go back to being an assistant.
It's going to take a lot more than just optimism...you need a new head coach, a new offensive coordinator, a new defensive coordinator, and you just might need a new QB after this year is over.
I really think you're right. I think the Jets will get back on track next week. There is too much talent on this roster to keep playing like this. It all depends on if the CS decides to send 5 or 6 guys at the QB instead of the meesly 3 bullshit we're doing right now.
We have played poorly this season, and we have rebounded nicely. We just have to do it again. Let's just hope the players are still hungry and don't just give up on the season
I cant even begin to understand how anyone can say Jets and Superbowl in the same sentence. I feel as if I was the only one who watched them play the last 2 weeks. Bad coaching, inconsistency, secondary playing like trash, and offense not playing much better, the Jets dont have a snowballs chance in hell.
The thing is, we're not losing these games because of mistakes or issues that look to be correctable. We're losing because we're getting completely pushed around. Where are the bright spots? They're non-existent.
There's no doubt these examples show that the eventual SB champion doesn't have to be dominant all year. Unfortunately, taking encouragement from that ignores the other side - the teams that hit that late bump and didn't recover. For example, last year Tennessee started 6-2, went 4-4 down the stretch, and then lost in the first round of the playoffs. Pittsburgh started 9-3, lost 3 of their last 4, and then lost in the first round of the playoffs. Tampa Bay started 8-4, lost 3 of their last 4, and lost in the first round of the playoffs. In 2006 Dallas started 9-5, lost their last 2, and lost in the first round of the playoffs. KC started 7-4, lost 3 of their last 5, and lost in the first round of the playoffs. The Giants started 6-2, lost 6 of their last 8, and lost in the first round of the playoffs. Cincinnati and Jacksonville started 8-5, lost their last 3, and both missed the playoffs. Denver started 7-2, lost 5 of their last 7, and missed the playoffs. A lot more of the teams that stumble down the stretch don't recover, rather than go all the way.
I just want to see this team win games again. We had a big safety net now that's gone. We just need wins, they don't have to be pretty.
not 7 straight. But at least win the one home playoff game. That would be nice. The NFC is winning it all again.
