going to either take williams at 4 or trade out....... just going over some articles and listening to the overall comments made and i get the feeling this is what will happen..... if we look at it in a simple way - the jets were 4-12, regardless of the reasons, and need players that will step in and contribute from day one... this being the first year of the "new" regime i think the biggest splash these guys can make is by accumulating picks as they have done and still look to add some more during the morning of the 29th IMO - the best way to make an impact in a turnaround situation is by getting a defensive stud who makes an impact right away and can enhance the players around - if the right system is in place. williams obviously qualifies and would be a good pick at 4. the talent gap between ferguson and the other tackles, IMO, is not great enough to warrant taking the OT at 4. The ot can be had at 29 or 35. the only other scenario i see is the jets trading out if they are offered a sweet deal. moving bown a few spots and taking the BPA - whether its davis, ngata, or even hawk - who i think will slip a couple spots. this is all conjecture but it makes for some nice conversation and hope that the jets will have a better team come May 1st. jil
Well trading down isn't a bad idea, but if Bush, Mario and Leinart are gone, the scenario I can see is a team like Arizona trading up for Young, unless they love Cutler. Finding a trading partner and agreeing in 15 minutes is the difficult thing....the Jets have to work out a pre-draft day scenario with an Arizona or Detriot to have all the logistics in place before we are on the clock. All the Jets would have to do is make one phone call and ask if they want to finish the deal. The more picks for the Jets , the better.
Trading down is the ideal situation because now that the Saints are out of the market for a QB there will be a huge market for Young/Leinart when they drop down to #4. They are guys that a team like the Cardinals would drool over, and quite frankly the Jets don't NEED a QB because i still have faith in Pennington so we would be better off with more picks to fill more holes.
I think anyone who thinks it's "clear" what the Jets will do with their first round picks this year is clearly out of their mind.
Well look at this way we are already down near the bottom of the crapper so it should be real easy for us to improve ourselves.
I would add Fergie to that mix. If either M. Williams or DBrick are available the jets should and will draft him. if not trade down. and pick up a vernon davis / huff / hawk?
I feel that trading down is what the Jets want to do - IF they can find someone who is a willing partner. The Jets would like an additional 2nd or 3rd round pick. The best case scenerio is if Leinart and/or Williams are available at #4 since this will create more interest for the teams drafting behind the Jets. The other key to trading down is that the Jets shouldhave choices of players they would be comfortable taking if they traded down - if you trade down and have ONE player you truly want it's a gamble and you can get burned. Thus, you want to trade down only as far down as to guarantee that you will be able to get one of these players. At #4 it is assumed the Jets can get the player they want, but they will have to pay #4 $$$$. My feeling is the Jets are willing to trade down to #7, maybe #9. If the Jets trade down to #7 this means there are two players they are interested in - ie. the likelihood of both of these players being taken 4th,5th, or 6th is highly unlikely and thus they are comfortable with this position. If they trade down to #9, then they may have 3 players that they are touting and the likelihood that one of these players is available is high. If the Jets trade down further - say with Denver (15 & 22) - that signals the Jets will pick the best available athlete at those #s. My feeling is the Jets would like to trade down. It is also my feeling that they would like a DT. However they trade down only if they rate both Bunkley and Ngata equally. One or both of them will be available at 7 and one should be available at 9. If they go back to 9 they should be willing to lose both of them and thus should be comfortable with a 3rd choice - say a safety or an OL. I think the main competition for a DT comes from Buffalo. Finally, if the Jets are truly in love with one DT they will not chance it and that player will be chosen #4.
your scenario is certainly the one I would most like to see happen, but I'd like to know why you get the feeling it will happen this way. I just feel like Mario is climbing right now.
My sense is that Williams is not the Jets top choice - they just got rid of a very talented DE who wanted alot of $$$$ and had some limitations with regard to being flexible in transitioning in/out of the 3-4 and 4-3 and being able to cover downfield on a moment's notice if necessary. Maybe Williams is a more flexible athlete, but my sense is that he may not fit the bill completely. I know I will get ridiculed, but the Jets already have a player that will fit very well into Mangini's scheme - Bryan Thomas. He's fast and he has alredy proven he is good against the run. He also can provide coverage downfield. If the Jets take Williams it will show they have no confidence in Thomas, but I don't think this will be the case. The Jets can create a front line that includes Ellis-Robertson-Ngata-Von Oelhoffen-Pope-Reed-Thomas. Potentially dominant with a very good LB squad behind them.
I would say the only thing clear about our plans for this draft are none of us have any clue about our plans for this draft..
Jill (and others) Driving around Vegas in the mornings I get a shot at listening to Colin Cowheard on ESPN. A few days ago he went over the guys he would pick in the top 4 and Mario Williams was not one of them. He explained it in his usually direct fashion by saying that Williams took too many plays off during his career. His feeling is that someone who does that will never change his ways in the bigs. He's been a star with tons of press and that's that. Now no one has to agree with that assesment, but Cowheard is a big time watcher of the college game, and I respect his opinion. His college picks for winners this past year have been superior to most...another reason I respect him. I loved the sound the cash register made at the book on some of the games I played. I'm suprised that no one remarked about that program on the board here.
I think those who feel Williams at 4 is our guy are probably right. Two great scenarios are if the Titans take Young at 3, that could leave both Williams and Leinert at 4. Wiliams only at 4 is not bad either. Pure speculation, but does anyone else think Al Davis could have the hots for either leinert or Young? If we trade down, maybe we can do something where we get he #7 pick. If Williams was on the board at 4, that leaves Hawk, Williams and Cutler still available and we would have a good chance at a defensive stud while getting an extra 1 next year or t wo this year.
and yet another reason why I think you are the most intellegent poster here. I'm all for trading down. The only way I think we can get the maximum value for #4 is if Tennessee takes Vince Young instead of Leinart. I think New Orleans will end up taking Mario Williams. I've always said that I think Minnesota is willing to give up their 1st and 2 2nd round picks to move up and grab a QB. If Leinart falls to #4 I think they would jump all over it to get the #4 pick. In a scenario that would give us a 1st and 2 more 2nd round picks and potentially a 1st round pick in next years draft. I think this would be the best option!!
That goes without saying. The fun is in the speculation and trying to get in the heads of the Jets draft philosophy. What really makes me laugh is that we assume that the Jets draft board or other teams for that matter resemble the Mel Kipers of this world. For all we know Williams could have a mid 1st round rating for the Jets. That's why I find it amusing that when someone says "that wasn't a value pick" - according to who? These guys watch tons more film and know so much more about technique and potential than the multiple draft gurus.
If we do trade down, i agree that we should remain in the top-10; but i disagree with what many of you are saying we should get in return. I think that we should get the teams 1st round selection this year, 3rd round selection this year, and 1st round selection next year.
After 1000+ posts I would think you'd know to put the entire subject of the tread in the title instead of half the sentance and then "..."
I agree ferguson is a stretch at 4 well a bit of a stretch, he is a long island boy, maybe him being drafted a jet will motivate him to be dominant and not just take the money and chill. I like other tackles in the draft as well... And wouldn't mind them over fergy, but fergy does separate himself from the others, and that little separation in the NFL is huge. I want mario all the way at 4, but if he is gone, maybe fergy is the pick... We have even less holes to fill now..
To me it seems clear they are working to trade up to take Leinart. They picked up # 29 which they need to make the trade. They signed Teague which , for the short term, fills the hole at C. Looks like Leinart to me.
I don't think the Jets will give up multiple valuable draft picks for one player who is not a lock and who would have to beat out Pennington and Ramsey.
