We definetly need help in the secondary. We also need linebackers who can cover guys. Hopefully that changes with Harris coming back this week.
This, I think, is really the core reason behind why our ranking is pretty bad. We simply are not getting pressure on the QB. We have to figure out ways of applying much more pressure as far as pass rush. If we can not figure this out, it likely will be our eventual undoing in the playoffs, assuming we get there.
This just makes no sense to me. How can a team top 10 in sacks, a top 10 coverage safety and a top 5 cover man be so bad? I've been sayin all year eventually we'd figure it out b/c we have too many factors(the aforementioned) on our side..and it still hasnt happend.
Dropping Pace into coverage instead of having Harris back there may have something to do with it. Not to mention having a rookie #2 CB who started strong but got weaker as the season went along.
Actually, I think there are some factors who play into that 1. our LBs aren´t exactly great in Coverage, which isn´t that surprising, if you consider, that (after Harris went down) 3 of our 4 LBs played DE 3 years ago. 2. our other Ss are just boneheaded, which forces Rhodes to stay back instead of attacking the crossingroutes over the middle and help the LBs out. 3. The Prevent, we play it way too much and it almost everytime sucks and lets the opposing QB look like a HOFer. 4. our Nickle- and Dime-Backs suck. 5. Sutton sucks
Harris is a big part, but I think the overall weakness on defense is our LB's. They can't cover and they aren't helping the Dline get consistent pressure on the QB. Barton has been a tackling machine, but you really aren't supposed to have a 3-4 LB rack up tackles like that. Something is wrong with the LB.
Good 34 ILBs usually do rack up tackles. OLB not so much. I think all our LBs are pretty good blitzers, we´re just not using them a lot to Blitz. I mean Jenkins creates huge holes in the middle for our ILBs to bitz, but we´re not sending them. Also our OLB blitzes aren´t very creative, and our DL doesn´t do any stunting. One of the biggest advantages of the 34 is, that the OL doesn´t know who the 4th rusher will be, the way we use it, the opponent usually doesn´t have a hard time guessing, because Sutton is playing it safe all the time. Fire Sutton, get a real DC!
You hit the nail on the head and the reason for concern. You would think after getting torched by Cassel, they would have a plan by now. Or are they just waiting for Harris to save the day? This can't continue and expect to go deep in the playoffs, especially if the Colts come calling.
Then that means you liked the loss this week. Personally I would like 12-0. You may get some more losses you can like if the pass defense doesn't improve.
Last season opponents didn't pass on the Jets because they didn't have to. They could run the ball instead. Surely you remember this.
Remember where we were last year, at this Point? The D couldn´t stop the Run and couldn´t get any Pressure and (if needed) was completely picked apart by just about any QB. The D this year is so much better than the D last year. If you would have told me a year ago, that this year this D would be one of the best against the Run and get a ton of Sacks, I would have called you crazy. It´s one thing to discuss about why they still have those problems in Coverage and what can be done about it, but just bitching about the one area this D still struggles, without bringing anything to the conversation, as you do, is just retarded at this Point.
We're not making the Super Bowl with a 30th ranked pass defense. Something has to change real fast or it'll be a very short postseason.
That's just so wrong. It's not the prevent, it's the crappy pass rush and the poor coverage. What do you think the team does, spend 20 minutes a game in prevent?
Right. We could even further the concern considering how well Ty Law has generally played. His coverage has been just a notch below Revis.I've never seen a team play the outside recievers so well and have SO many problems covering over the middle and the slot. It's actually an awful lot like the Jets of the mid 80's. Decent outside corner play, great run stuffing LB's...a fierce pass rush..but the Lb's couldnt cover for shit.
I thought Denver was a great opportunity to show improvement. As it turned out the whole team laid an egg so that failed. I'd love for the Jets to show improvement in this area and I think they will return to a middle of the pack type pass defense ability. That said, I think it is possible to make the super bowl with a weak pass defense this year. Of the AFC teams in the playoff hunt we may have to face include Titans(186), Steelers(201), Broncos(280), Colts(239), Ravens(180), Dolphins(239), Patriots(224). Of those there are four teams that are above the NFL average in passing yards per game including Broncos, Colts, fish and patsies. It would be possible to draw Ravens, Steelers and Titans for three better matchups through the playoffs. I don't know what the chances of that are, but it is possible. Hell, it is possible to have one game where the defense plays out of its mind good against the pass and upsets a team like Indy. Once we get in the playoffs anything could happen.
