I think this thread is wrong and makes no sense. It is attacking Rhodes the player, when really Rhodes is in this system. Switch him out with Troy Polumalu or Ed Reed and he makes more plays in those Defenses. Guarenteed.
the tree man rush, lining up 40 yards deep.... etc. non have anything to do with him giving big time pops like a Sanders or Troy P. I keep seing running backs & tight ends running 5-10 yards with him on their back like a dam rodeo deal. Cmon!
I'm sorry to tell you this but Rhodes hasn't proven he is as good as either of those guys. You are putting WAY too much blame on the defensive coaching staff (Like most people on this board). Rhodes has plenty of opportunities to make plays, he just isn't making them at a pro-bowl rate.
Wrong. Rhodes plays deep so often because that is what he is great at. That is his strength. One of the biggest myths on this board is that Rhodes is great at blitzing. He isn't. His timing is quite bad somtimes and he takes himself out of a lot of plays as a direct result of it. Also, he isn't a big time hitter and his coverage skills (as I have stated) are a bit overrated on this board.
I still think he is better than average but I agree that he definately hasn't been the pro-bowl player so many people on this board have suggested that he has been.
You guys are talking about 2008 right? And not overall. He was very good in 2006 and 2007. This year he has been thrown at less and has not made the big plays, I agree.
eh, as I indicated in my first post, I started thinking this in the middle of last season. I thought he was great in 2006 and deserved to be in the pro-bowl. I think the past 2 seasons he has not played up to his 2006 form.
I'm really glad that some people agree with me. I was worried I would be the only one. He seems to be one of the most popular players on this board and I thought I would be ridiculed for suggesting he might be overrated.
He's overrated by Jets fans. In case you havent noticed, there is an all or nothing mentality among Jet fans. Either someone completely blows or he is God's gift to football. Either the team is going to play in a "Subway SB" or they are pathetically "unacceptable". There is very little in-between.
Rhodes obviously doesn't get much respect around the league because he has played well in the past and hasn't made it over guys who are old and washed up(Lynch) or Polamalu(who played like 4 games last season). He has to blame for how poor the secondary has played but he isn't overrated. He may be overrated by Jet fans but as a player he's still very good/

Rhodes isn't making the plays he made in 06 and 07 because he is being thrown at way less ala asomugha. Why challenge revis and rhodes when u can attack our weaker secondary. Rhodes should have already been in the pro bowl twice but he has been screwed by the likes of lynch and bethea who suck. Rhodes IMO is still up there with reed and polamalu
