This site is an extreme in the world of fan-dom. 6 weeks ago most of the site was convinced we had the worst coaching staff in the league and would never beat a good team until they were fired.
The more we get ahead of ourselves, the more chance patsfans.com will be filled with lolz threads with pictures of Favre substituted for Brady, as below. Rememeber how much we all ripped the Chowds for assuming 19-0*?
Just chalk it up to playing in New York. It's all about hype and many of the fans buy into it. Negative or positive so it comes with the territory and it really is just a sideshow and a distraction. We are one measly loss from struggling for our playoff lives with the competition nipping at our heels. Clinch a playoff spot first, then start talking about the big game.
Who cares what's written on another team's messageboard? They're never going to write anything nice anyway (and why should they?) and if you don't go there you'll never have to know...
i would expect no less of a post from someone with an fn "blair thomas" avatar. change it to a brett favre avatar and then maybe you can feel the moment. don't drag us all down with your pesimissim. it's been toooo frigen long so lets just enjoy it.
Well. since we have seen a number of savior QBs come and go over the past 20 years, how about I change it to a Boomer themed one? Or a Vinny one? Or a Richard Todd one? Or a Ken O'Brien one? Any takers? All of those guys fell short. If Favre gets us to the SB, I'll think about changing it.
I don't mind us talking about a SB as much as I mind the media harping about it to the players already. Reporters and guys like Francessa, etc, are already getting in the faces of our players and asking them about itand talking about it on air, etc. Of course, our players' response has been what you'd expect it to be, but still, it plants that little seed on their minds about going to a SB. I don't like it. I don't like having the players have to address it constantly, because after awhile it starts to become like, "Well, maybe this IS possible. The reporters keep on bringing it up, so maybe we ARE headed for the SB." And that's exactly when things start to break down. Mangini is doing what he has to do... it's 5 game season now. One game at a time and that's the one game you have to win and can't lose. There is no room for losing the next game. Every single game becomes more important than the last game. As long as he can keep the players on track with this, I think they'll be alright.
Thanks for posting this point; this is exactly what we should all be concerned about. The more the fans talk about a SB appearance, the more the reporters will put it in the players' minds (and vice versa).
I think Mangini and the entire CS are well aware of how much of a trap it is to even begin thinking SB. In fact, the closer we get, the more emphasis is probably going to be placed on diminshing the expectations of it. "There will be no SB if we don't win the next game, period. And the week after, the same thing... there will be no SB if we don't get it out of our minds and concentrate on the next game."
Most still do. However, most on this site will not settle for one and out again in the playoffs too. You want to see a call for blood? You will if that happens. This team has the players to advance deep into the playoffs. If they don't (and remain healthy) then the finger can only be pointed at the coaching.
Thinking you're going to the superbowl and focusing on the next task/opponent are not mutually exclusive things. I hope that every player on the team thinks they're going to the superbowl and win it. I also hope they're working there ass off and focusing on beating the broncos right now. If you think you ARE going to do something you are much more likely to do it than if you think you aren't.
I remember that guy on tv guaranteeing the Jets would not win another game. When it happened I decided the Jets were cursed. Anyway, I think the Titans remind me more of that team than this year's Jets team. The Titans have all their hard games at the end, lets see how they do.
When the fans are pessimistic (I've certainly been guilty myself) they get ripped for not supporting the team. When the fans get excited and start talking SB they get ripped for getting ahead of themselves. It will always be that way. Personally, I've got my heart set on a 13-3 finish and a Suporbowl win. Shoot, I mean, how often do we get this kind of chance to dream big as Jets fans? If you can't handle the optimism, so be it. I'd rather ride this emotional high until there's a reason not to. :jets::beer::jets:
This must be shaping up as mangini's worst nightmare. As I said erlier nobody is going to accept a one and out playoff run for this team after what they did the last two weeks. Maybe we don't get to the SB but we certainly better get deep into the playoffs.
Yes, I'm sure it's his worst nightmare to be 8-3 with the division lead and a team playing at a very high level. How does the man sleep at night?
Thought this thread was worth revisiting. So just like I said two weeks ago, let's all hope and pray we can just QUALIFY for the playoffs. Doesn't all of the SB talk from two weeks ago sound a bit, well, silly at this point?
