If anyone is wondering the complication of the Shockey and Vilma trades I thought I would post this for everyone.

The first trade was for Vilma who the Saints gave the Jets their 08 4th round pick for.If Vilma plays in 85% or more of the defensive plays the Saints give up their 09 3rd round pick and if he completes that step and is resigned the Saints then give up their 09 2nd round pick. With either of these the Saints will get back their 4th round pick in the form of the Jets 09 4th rounder.

With the Shockey trade the Saints gave thier 2nd and 5th (2009) for him if the Jets though get the 09 2nd round pick the Saints then give their 2010 1st round pick to the Giants for him.

So If the Saints resign Vilma, which they will, the Jets get 2008 4th rounder and 2009 3rd and 2nd

If Vilma reaches certain playtime incentives and signs a contract extension with New Orleans, New York would instead receive a second- or third-round pick in 2009. The Jets would then give the Saints their fourth-round pick next year.

hmm...so i havent been paying attention to vilma on the saints but ill assume he is playing in most of the games.

therefore, it seems to be that at the worst, we have lost our 4th rounder to the saints, and have already received their 3rd rounder. if vilma resigns, then that 3rd rounder becomes a 2nd. am i reading that right?

There's one thing I'm wondering about... if they franchise Vilma next season, is that considered 're-signed'? Because a franchise tag requires the signing of a 1-year tender.

    Correct.

It is considered resigning for 1 year. Being they would need to give up the pick either way I would assume they will try to sign him to a longer term.

cool. now i know to root for the jets (obviously) and root against the saints, redskins, and potentially broncos so that those picks keep rising higher and higher. we need to make up for being last in each round of course :)

So just to clarify, WE ALREADY HAVE their 4th rounder? If the trade escalates, as it likely will, we then give them BACK THEIR 4th rounder, or our fourth rounder?

So we'd get their 2nd and 3rd rounder and swap 4th rounders? That sounds like we're moving up in the 4th, right?

its interesting to see how that affects the saints overall. by resigning vilma in any way, one year or longer, they lose their 2010 1st round pick to the giants. not saying that should affect their decision in any way, but its crazy hows its all intertwined...

close but not quite as i understand it.

we already HAD their 4th in 2008.

    for 2009:
    they already have OUR 4th.
we have their 3rd which can become (not be added to) their 2nd if Vilma resigns. so we will end up with EITHER their 3rd or 2nd while losing our 4th...

    Here's an interesting hypothetical question:

Morality, Legality aside, if you're an extremely well-endowed Jets fan and Jonathan Vilma is on the hedge about whether or not to resign, do you send him a couple hookers and a bottle of scotch so that the Jets get a better pick?

    Any volunteers?

The Carolina Panthers dealt the three-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle to the Jets early Friday morning in exchange for New York's third- and fifth-round draft picks in 2008.

    more realistic:

    Round 1: 1 pick (Ours)
Round 2: 1 picks. (Saints) (2nd going to GB for Favre trade)
    Round 3: 1 pick. (Ours)
Round 4: 1 picks. (Redskins) (our 4th given back to Saints for Vilma trade)
    Round 5: 1 picks. (Ours)
    Round 6: 1 pick. (Ours)
    Round 7: 1 pick. (Ours)

We haven't received anything for Vilma yet. We did not get the Saints 4th round pick last year. Right now we are getting their 4th round pick this year. We most likely will be giving the Saints our 4th and getting their 3rd. From my understanding they made it extremely difficult for us to get the 2nd round pick.

As of right now we have:
    1st (Jets)
    2nd (Jets)
    3rd (Jets)
    4th (Jets)
    4th (Saints)
    4th (Redskins)
    5th (Jets)
    6th (Jets)
    7th (Jets)

What we will probably have come draft day if we make the playoffs:
    1st (Jets)
    2nd (traded for Favre)
    3rd (Saints)
    3rd (Jets)
    4th (Redskins)
    5th (Jets)
    6th (Jets)
    7th (Jets)

Nice. So we get rid of a nice guy who didn't fit our system, a douchebag who did, trade for the greatest quarterback of all time and still maintain a complete draft.

That Mike Tannenbaum is fucking brilliant.

i can't post link, but go to the nfl draft website and check out the 4th round. it says there new york jets (from saints through packers)...
