Right now, everyone here is upbeat- but a trend I've noticed is that whenever somebody credits the O- and particularly Favre- others are quick to swarm and point out that this team's success is all about Jenkins and the D. While for a good portion of the season this was true- especially early as the offense was still getting its feet on the ground and Favre had an iffy rapport with Schotty and the receivers- right now, this team is winning because of the offense, then the special teams, and then the D. And I'm going to go a step further- and I may get bashed for this- but I'm going to give Favre and the receivers 90% of the credit- not the OL, and not the running game- and I only need one drive to prove it. Our opening drive against Tennessee. True, our D forced a 3 and out, but we weren't facing a great offensive team- we were facing a fierce, tough, hard-nosed top-of-the-line defensive team. And we came out throwing. Our first drive we threw 6 times for 70 yards, and ran 3 times for 6 yards. We knew our OL wasn't going to line up and manhandle them, so we couldn't pound the rock right off the bat. And furthermore, we couldn't do long, elaborate passing plays. The ball was out of Favre's hands almost instantly every passing play, and they were all complete for positive yardage. That one drive was 100% the work of Favre and the receivers, an it put Tennessee on their heels, and made them re-think their defensive strategy- promptly opening up the running game for the rest of the game, and giving our OL the upper hand. Don't get me wrong- I love our run D- it's great and a big reason we're winning- but we can be, and are consistently passed on. The difference is that our offense consistently controls the ball, gives our D rest, and puts the opposing team in a hole. And the #1 reason is Favre's ability to get the ball into the hands of our playmakers with room, and time to run. I hate to sound like I've been watching too much ESPN (for the record- I don't have cable right now) but Brett Favre is the main reason we won yesterday, and the reason this team is looking as good as it is.
Those 5min+ drives kept the Titans D on field, wearing them down. Watching the game with my dad & other guys at the bar, there was concern about the lack of points early, despite the TOP. I said " their D has been on the field all game, this game is about to break wide open"
Not surprising to people who watched the Packers last year, looks familiar to me. Also, hate it when media says Favre is being "game manager". come on, watch the game, so much more than that. Does anyone know who leads the league in YAC now? Tried to look it up, no luck.
Favre is playing great. Anyone who doesn't understand this is either not really watching the games or doesn't understand football.
Our first drive was so freakin sweet. It was like "oh this is the best defense in the league, huh?" and we came right at them, throwing. I love that aggressive nature. And that set the tone for the whole game
I tend to disagree vehemently with the thought that the skill players are what drives winning teams. I still do. You make a compelling arguement. And being there yesterday, it's true - our quick hit passing game kept the defense on their toes, while establishing momentum. Sitting in the stands I was screaming for them to establish the run with the pass - and they did. And once they did they dominated the heck out of one of footballs best sets of lines. That said, the reason the Jets have a shot playing into January, is they look like they're growing a dominant OL and DL. Winning teams control the LOS, and the Jets are looking like a team that does that AND THEN can beat you at the skill positions. HAving a non noodle arm in the MEadowlands will pay off in the winter months too. The reason they went to the quick hit with the skill players is they were matching up against a team with top tier interior presence and weaker skill players (secondary). REgardless, excellent argument, and OMGosh, I am confident in my team for the first time in years, and with no Denver lurking, I actually feel more confident in my team's chances than I ever have!
Yesterday is was a lot of great play from both sides of the ball, our defense totally killed their offensive gameplan and Favre dissected their defense like a heart surgeon right from the start. It was a beautiful thing to see. It's not all about anything. The entire team played out of their minds yesterday. Early on this season, the defense starting clicking first, and kept us in games while the offense tried to sync up. Now that both sides of the LOS are getting their heads, this team is kicking some ass.
Its actually all about the team. Our defense makes as many big plays as our offense does. Several 3 and outs, and he fumble turnover, combine to help feild position for the O. We faced one of the great rushing offenses in the league. A team that normally spends long drives wearing out the other teams defense. We shut down thier power running game badly. Stacked thme up on third and short. Demoralized thier offense. Our Offense took advantage of a great game plan and our own power running attack did well against a very stout D on the other side. This was a total team win.
I said it last week and all year for that matter - Against the Pats people blamed the defense for letting them come back - well look at the offensive possesions at the end of the 2nd half thru the 3rd qtr and the time of possession... THAT is what happened to the defense.
40:30 to 19:30 is the story of this game. The OL and the DL are complementary. We had two turnovers, they had one. They got NOTHING on either turnover. But when Elam ripped the ball off of Chris Johnson so Bryan T could recover it, the OU went down and and scored a TD. It's a left and then a right. It's 45 yards on the ground and the big bruiser back for Tennessee is left whining "I don't care, I wasn't paying attention... three plays!!" Yeah. One run for -1 (thank you DL), and two drops (thank you DBs). Haynesworth said the truth -- "...they got so many moving parts... they kept us off balance all day..." The Titans had no idea what we were going to do on offense or defense all day. The 10 and 0 TITANS were bumfuzzled. The OL and the DL. This was a complete game. The OL smashed them in the mouth for 192 yards on the ground. The DL held them to 45 yards and 14 points. The NYJ beat the unbeaten as a total team. Arguing one side (Offense or Defense) is simply missing the point.
Just to throw this out there--- with the Defense only playing 20:00 in that game, they are less tired then they would normally be after a game, giving them fresher legs going into the next game, this is also after having 10 days off since the Pats game.... this does wonders for a defenses endurance and confidence.
Here, here! This was a total team effort. Houston, we might finally have the "chemistry" Favre was talking about in Week One.
The key is the trenches on both sides of the ball. The Jets are just dominating the pit and then winning off of the skill players ability to exploit a stacked deck. This is the first Jets team since 1982 that I feel is head and heels above the other team in the pits regardless of who the opponent is. The Jets MVP's right now are Jenkins and Favre but Favre is getting a huge assist from Mangold and his crew.
Stupid announcers... When Jenkins went down they said something like "well, when you play big guys like this eventually they wear out"... DUDE... The Jets D and Jenkins hardly played at all the whole game WTF are you talking about, come over here so I can Smack you.
I agree with the argument that the Jets are a complete package right now. To say that they are winning because of only one thing is very short sighted. The Jets are getting it done in all facets of the game, and that is why you saw a dominating victory over the Titans, and a dominant first half against the Patriots. To the OP, if I had to select a team MVP this year, it is Kris Jenkins, hands down. Then it goes to the OL after that. Then the linebackers and defensive ends. Still, I am in no way disputing what Favre brings to this team. Again, this is a complete team.
I think it was more a comment on the big deffensive line men in general (more about the titals guy that was really tired and went down the drive earlier).
