News of Seymour's resigning today with the Pats (see below) just reinforces my belief that Williams is Mangini's #1 target.

Most everyone seems to agree that Mangini will follow the Belichick blueprint, and Bill's bible says get yourself a D lineman versatile enough to play all 4 line positions. Mario looks like Mangini's Seymour.

"Four-time Pro Bowl performer Richard Seymour, one of the league's most dominant and versatile front four defenders, on Wednesday reached agreement with the New England Patriots on a long-term contract extension, ESPN.com has learned.

"The former University of Georgia star is a great fit for the Bill Belichick defense because of his ability to dominate at two positions. Seymour possesses a rare blend of strength and quickness, can play both the one- and two-gap styles and provides the Pats a player for whom opposition offensive coordinators and line coaches must game-plan."

    Right on...

According to a source with knowledge of negotiations, Patriots DL Richard Seymour soon will become the highest-paid defensive player in the league

And you gotta love the peopla who claim we won't take Mario cuz our defense is set up in such a way that you can save money at DE....

Or the people who say a 295 lb freak isn't a good fit for a 3/4....

Anyone who has posted something like this, please check youself in ASAP.. You need to be put away so you can watch a lot more football.

    I don't agree.

I do not see Mario Williams as Seymour. I see him as a pass rushing DE kind of like Abraham with more size. Unless you think he can play OLB in the 3-4 in an LT mode, I wouldn't take him if I were the Jets.

Are you freaking kidding me? How the hell does this show that Mangini is looking more at Mario, its a different team. God damn what a ridiculous post

One thing has nothing to do with the other... but I still want us to take Mario Williams and game plan around his strengths, he is the type of player you adapt your system to fit.

Just because the Patriots have an elite D-lineman, doesn't mean we're drafting Mario. By setting ourselves up as the Patriots, that means we fill in every position, with versatile, hardworking, lunch pail guys, have a lot of depth and grab your stars in the draft. The Patriot way is not to overpay for somebody else's free agent.

I disagree - That article refutes all the people who say the 3-4 defense is a way to SAVE money on DE's when we see the highest paid player on the best 3-4 D in the league......

That article also stresses (for the slower people) how important having a Verisitile Big man who can play a few DL positions is to a team and a defense...

Very Good Post and obvioulsly people still don't get it - But, I recent;y dicovered the average age post so around here, so it explains a lot.

Um,, yeah, I'm damn near positive Manigin would like an elite QB.... The question is - Where is he...

Now what did THAT have to do with a 3-4 DE, Seymour OR Mario...

These people are from left field.

    HUH???????

The Patiots defense is hingepinned around a Big Versitile De that can play a 3-4 or a 4-3 DE.....

If we get Mario it will have EVERYTHING to do with the Pats Defense and our head coach from THAT system.

Richard Seymour makes that defense tick and THAT is why they are making him the highest paid defender in the NFL and that is why the Jets will use a high pick on Mario.

I agree get Mario but we arent the Patriots.

    Belichek/Mangin are 2 different men.

Ive always said DEFENSE wins games and MANGINI is DEFENSIVE minded head coach

We're going to run damn near the same defense and philosphy - We're going to be looking at the same tyoe of players and we're going to look to have strengths at similar positions - UMMMMM, LIKE HAVING A VERSITILE 3-4 DE!!!!

I don't seem to remember John Abraham playing any DT when he was at South Carolina like Mario did with decent enough regularity while he was at NC State. Williams is, like vilmatic said, power and speed, there is nothing about him that makes him a one dimensional passrusher.

Williams is a versatile prospect with a unique combination of size, strength, speed and agility. He may not end up being as good as Seymour and he may turn out to be better. Abe was a good pass rusher but below average against the run. He also had no ability to drop back in coverage so with a 3-4 D or even a 3-4/4-3 hybrid, it made no sense whatsoever to keep Abe. Ellis is a classic 3-4 or hybrid DE and Williams will be as well. My concern is about D-Rob and how he'll fit. If Thomas adapts to playing OLB well, all the better. Otherwise I'll be very pleased if the Jets pick Mario at #4.

Mario Williams being played as a hybrid DT/DE would be a serious waste of speed and passrushing ability.

Hmmm, why do you say that???It didn't seem to hurt his numbers any in college. That's the way Amato used him at NC State.I live in NC and I watched almost all of Mario's games and I'm telling you he is almost a clone of Richard Seymour. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if he is the pick at #4.This guy has strength and speed. He can play DT or DE in a 4-3 and DE in a 3-4.He is exactly the kind of player they want to build this defense.

Uhhh, Williams is 300lbs with the athletism of a 4-3 DE. That is what you want to see for a DE in a 3-4. Where do you get this idea that he can't stop the rush and he is a pass rushing only DE. That's way farther from the truth.
