Don't you think signing a starter would be a good idea?

Come on man, he's a 29 year old ST player-- he was brought in to be a backup, at a position where we need starters.

You are right the holes are not fixed, But all holes will never be fixed thats the way football is. Players get old and get injured. You are constantly bailing water out the side to keep the ship afloat. These signings are not only stop gap and transition to the furure signings but they give us flexibility in the draft. IMHO our two biggest needs are OT and OLB and we will almost assurdely draft one OT and one OLB in our first 3 picks. The signings not only add depth but they give us draft flexibilty. If we want to take Mario, or even a QB with our first pick we can now do so and fill our OT and OLB needs later on.

He's missed more games in two years than John Abraham has in his career. Torn ACL two MCL's and major surgery and couldn't play after the first surgery. But he comes real cheap!

I have always said, I like the guys we signed 2 years ago-- young guys who are not big time names, but have proven that they are starters at least, and are in their prime. Barrett, Barton, and McCareins. Obviously this year was not great for any of them statistically, but that is the kind of signing I love. They all played very well in their first year with us, and they are all pretty cheap on the cap. Dyson is the closest comparison as a signing.

i dont even see the reason to why ur bitching.. you knew we were gonna suck this year. just sit back and see where this rebuilding process takes us. a guy like dyson is a good signing with the 5 yard rule small fast cbs are good to have.. we are developing this year. see who is who. next year we will sign better players.. and the year after that were gonna sign a star are two to gear up for a playoff run.. it just phase 1 in thw rebuilding processs.. you cant build a tea through FA.. remember the redskins

The opinion of The kicker and QB changed-- everyone else already had a good rep. Check out your madden 2002 on dreamcast for player rankings!!

Again, the Chiefs have nothing to do with this conversation. Go to their board, please stop bothering us Jets fans.

I dont mind signing these "hold the fort" type players. Not all of your draft picks will be starters right away. We hope they start, but it never works that way. And relying on undrafted rookie FA's, street FA's and waivers doesnt always work but those players can be relied on for deph. Just sign these so-so starters for every position we need, then draft the best avialable player and who cares about the position. Its not good to draft a guy who is 5th on your draft board cause he will start for you right away, just go for the best player.
If our #29 doesnt start right away who cares, we all know he was the number 1 player on their draft board and will start in 2007 or 08 cause all of these players we signed are basically one or 2 yr deals(expect Dyson)

Hotcoles...I can completely understand where your coming from...but theres just one thing that doesnt let me go as far as you do.

Mangini/Tannenbaum said after they were signed....doing talk shows the same day...that the Jets will build by character first.

They are bringing in guys that have one common characteristic...they are versatile. They all have the ability to play several positions. They have to believe that the glamour will be added through the draft. We do have a decent amount of quality picks this year.

I also do believe that these "stars" that you talk about...well I think they believe that some of them are already here. I think they look at an Ellis...a Roberston...a Vilma...and a couple of the young guys in the secondary as players that would prosper in the new system....and with solid conditioning.

As much as I see where your coming from...its tough for us as fans to look at this season as a test. They have to find out what this roster is made up of. You cant cut 51 players and start over.

With that said, it would be foolish to spend money this year on high quality players because you could be screwing up your cap for years to come.

I guess an arguement could be made that theres two ways to build a team...first you can sign a small bunch of stars and surround them...or you could sign good football players and add the stars to put you over the top.

There is another common thread between all these guys that have been signed...there are no potential premadonnas. They all have the "football mentality" that Mangini craves.

Dont know the answers...or what exactly the direction they are heading...all I know is every guy that they have signed so far, has been really respected by his teamates and coaching staff for the kind of heart they show on the field....and thats what MT/EM promised.

Just be a little patient and remember...these stars you talk about up in New England..for the most part....didnt come via free agency....they were molded and groomed by the Pats coaching staff.

OK- but I will say this... i remember about a month ago YOU saying that the FA we are looking at are "kinda wack" i agreed then, and I agree now, and I love to say the word "wack" myself... I figured you would be with me on this one. you can't tell me that Kimo Von Olehoffen, and his wooden shoes is a cool signing! In all honesty, I'm a 26 year old who went to Penn State, who would prefer to see 40 guys from The Miami Canes on my team than anything. I have forced myself to hate Patriots players over their SB run, and its really hard to all of a sudden like guys like that. I like players like Sean Taylor, Clinton Portis, Jeremy Shockey, Ed Reed, DJ Williams, Santana Moss ext. Signing a 36 year old slob from Holland just doesn't do it for me.

lol i hear ya. what your saying. i do agree these arent the best guys in the world. beside dyson (who i think can be good) i think the rest of these guys will be average at best. but like i said when your are rebuilding. 1st phase is development. so its about the adrian Jones, the brandon moores, colemans, millersthe rhodes, this years rookie class ect.. its time to see who is who. next year i bet you the free agent signings are gonna be much better. Were gonna suck next year but it should be fun seeing the young guys grow up.

and whats the common denominator of all those stars that the Patriots had during there run?? With the exception of Ted Washington they were all drafted by the Patriots. You build through the draft and fill in pieces through FA. We need to draft our stars and that starts April 29th..

You're right, if Teague is the reason that they don't take Mangold at #29 I will be upset. Hopefully the front office and coaching staff aren't so shortsighted to pass on a blue chip center prospect because they alread have a crappy center signed to a two year contract.

Similarly I hope that Pearson won't influence the decision to draft Ferguson. D'Brick is as big an upgrade over Jones at LT as Hawk is an upgrade over Hobson.

On that note, why do you think that the decision to sign Teague means that we will pass on Ferguson yet the decision to sign von Oelhoffen does not mean that we will pass on Williams?

i didnt say teague signing had anythig to do with ferg... and kimo is 35 and mario is the 2nd ranked player on most boards and a freakish elite player unlike d brick who comes around every year.

If we don't take an OT in the first round this year I will riot. Pearson is a complete plug, and so is Teague. There's a reason why Teague isn't even getting a million per year... He is average at best! We still MUST take Mangold if he's there, and we still SHOULD take D'Brick if he's there or TRADE DOWN. If we take a QB I will be so chapped....

Truse me, I am the most RIDICULOUS fan of the draft there is. If you have ever been to the site, draftboardinsider.com, you will see that they have a countdown to the draft... I was on there with 150 days until the draft, and have been looking up draft info ever since!! I love nothing more than drafting a player who I liked in college (Like Vilma) and watching him develop into a stud. I love our young guys, Vilma, Coleman, Miller, Rhodes, Jones, Cotchery, houston, Strait, McClover ect. I hope we can find some more late round gems like we have in the last 2 years.

And I see you are from NY-- do you throw the "R" at the end of a word ending with an "A" like mad dog? Do you say Vilmer? I do, but I force it...
