There is currently a poll on espn asking: who should the Jets select at No.4? I was a little suprized at the numbers and even how the broke down by state. The results so far: Cutler 26% Davis 5% Hawk 14% Mario 19% Young 36% http://espn.go.com
That is pretty surprising. I guess it's understandable though because for people who don't know the Jets well, our most glaring weakness is the QB position.
That is why I was surprised to see the results for NY and NJ. The regional areas where these players are from is not surprising because there is almost always a bias in these type of polls when it comes to local favorites.
They should include the possibility of Leinart slipping, just to be fair. I mean, he's not even an option to vote on? Come on. This is the only guy they should be looking to draft. And if they end up with a Mario Williams or D'Brick, that's not going to be too bad either.
39% of New York thinks we should take Young. Surprising, that's no where near the percentage on this board. I think D'Brick isn't an option because they already did the Texans, Saints, and Titans and those picks were Bush, Brick, Leinart.
I'm assuming that they have Bush, Leinart and D'Brick gone already. Most likely D'Brick went to the Titans. Just say no to dumb QBs that have awkward delivery and played in an offense where they stand in the shotgun, look at one target and then run! These voters must all be in high school or younger. They probably only know "that dude they saw in the Rose Bowl." Give me Cutler of Mario. Davis will be great, but he's just not worth more than Cutler or Mario.
Dumb Qbs are you serious Young and Leinart playing division 1 football for the likes of USC and Texas and they are dumb? Give me a break.
Who's voting for Hawk???.... The Jets need either OL or DL at #4. Taking Hawk would not make much sense in my opinion. He's good, but is he really going to impact the entire defense the way a great pass rusher would, or a top notch OT would on offense???.. I think it all starts up front, and if Mangini is rebuilding this thing in NY, I think he'd be wise to establish the lines as a strength, prior to going after anything else. The Jet OL and DL have weakened considerably in my opinion, and that's where I'd start. Just my opinion, and I voted for Mario....
Oh god No!!!!! Not Vince Young! If that happens I'm going to insert an IV to steadly numb me with alcohol until opening day of the season, and really crank it up when I watch guys like D'Brick, Mario, Hawk etc make instant contributions to their teams right away. I know of said it before but the Jets have so many needs to fill that I don't think we have time to take a project like Young with the 4th pick. Take the safe pick with D'Brick, or Mario. If we want a QB so bad I say the smart choice would be to offer up the 29th pick to Atlanta and get Schaub. That is their asking Price, from a proven west coast style, game tested QB. Why not didn't we give a 26th pick to the Raiders for Doug fricken Jolley? I never understood that move when we could of grabbed Heath Miller at that spot anyway?
If both Leinart and Ferguson are off the board I want the Jets to draft Young. He's a freak of nature as an athelete and, though he sucked up the Wonderlic, has proven that he has an outstanding on field IQ. He will not be able to start immediately, but that's what Patrick Ramsey is for. BTW greenthumb, the Jolley deal also allowed us to take Mike Nugent.
I think the Jets should stay at four and draft the best QB at that spot. However, I do not work for the Jets. It may be, and we as fans would never know this until many years down the road in some book or magazine article, that the Jets coaches and scouts hate one of the three QBs and perhaps don't like any of the three. Then again, they may also like all three. Ahh, who the heck knows.
But what if Ramsey plays well (and I think he will) and we find ourselves next offseason with the pay Ramsey or play the untested Young scenario? AND more than likely saying goodbye to any realistic playoff chance. The success of first year starters is not exactly gleaming.
We can let Young sit for 2 years and then we will be in the enviable situation of having 2 starting quarterbacks. If Ramsey plays like a superstar we can move him (ala Drew Brees, though obviously he was released because the injury tanked his trade value) or if he just plays really well we can let him become the backup (ala Jon Kitna.) Considering that we had no reliable backup for most of last season, that would be the ideal scenario with the Jets drafting Young.
