'PERFECT' STORM AWAITING JETS IN TENNESSEE By BRIAN COSTELLO ONWARD! Brett Favre, signaling first down in the Jets' win over the Pats on Thursday, faces an even tougher challenge in Nashville on Sunday ? as one Titan fan makes a point to show. Posted: 3:57 am November 18, 2008 Now we get to see what the JetsNew York Jets can do for an encore. After the Jets' dramatic overtime victory in New England on Thursday night, the unbeaten Titans await Sunday in Nashville. Tennessee is 10-0, and feeling invincible. Jet coach Eric Mangini has had a few extra days to look at the Titans since Gang Green (7-3) last played, and he's been impressed by what he's seen. "I think they play complementary football, and they're talented in all three phases," he said yesterday. "They're well-coached, they score a lot of points in the second quarter and the fourth quarter, which makes you believe that they're very well-conditioned. They don't make a lot of mistakes. They haven't turned the ball over much offensively, and they've been able to generate a lot of turnovers defensively." The Titans nearly stumbled Sunday in Jacksonville. They trailed 14-3 at halftime before rallying to win 24-14. The Titans have done it with a stout defense, a strong running game and the resurgence of former Giant quarterback Kerry Collins, who has thrived since replacing Vince Young. With each victory, their confidence has ballooned, and after Sunday's game, a few players sounded as if they think they can pull off a perfect season. "If we play Titan football, we can't lose," receiver Justin Gage told The Tennessean. Fellow receiver Brandon Jones echoed that belief. "We feel like we can't lose," Jones said. "We have a refuse-to-lose mentality." The Jets are feeling pretty good about themselves, too, after Thursday's drama in Foxborough. All of it adds up to a showdown between two unlikely AFC leaders. The timing of the game might benefit the Jets. If they were facing an also-ran, there might be some room for a letdown after the emotional victory over the Patriots. But with an unbeaten team in front of them and a playoff berth in their grasp, expect a focused Jet group Sunday. "Each game becomes that much more important," Mangini said. "A lot of things are decided over the course of the next six weeks, obviously, so you're looking to play at as consistent a level as you can and work as hard as you possibly could to avoid a letdown in any situation." The Jets and Titans have similar strengths. Both are in the top 10 in the NFL in running the ball and in defending the run. While Kris Jenkins clogs the middle for the Jets, Titan tackle Albert Haynesworth may be the best defensive lineman in the league. He had seven tackles, a sack and a forced fumble Sunday vs. the Jags. Haynesworth is a big reason the Titans are allowing just 13.1 points per game, best in the NFL. "He's got great size, he's got great short-area quickness, he's got excellent explosiveness," Mangini said. "He's a big man that can move, and combines that size with great natural strength and power." * The Jets' Nov. 30 game against the Broncos at the Meadowlands has been moved to a 4:15 p.m. start.
Titans are a very good football team. But theyre not a 10-0 team. Our short passing attack has to be clicking and we need to avoid the deep ball from Collins. I like our chances. PLus the Titans are due for a couple big turnovers late. Jets win 19-14.
Favre needs to be on, they need to protect him, and please, CS, find a way to get some PRESSURE on the living statue that is Collins.
While I respect the Titans immensely for their record, they did fall behind 14-3 in the last game. I'm sure we're looking at that game film very closely and then how they got back into it, because that's a perfect blueprint for how to avoid that kind of trap. We've got a shot at this. Not saying our chances are great, but here's my prediction: Jets 24 - Titans 20
Everyone says that but yet no one has beaten them. They are a very good team and if we go in even thinking anything close to they're not a 10-0 team we will be win No. 11 for them.
They are good but in no way, shape or form are they last year's Patriots. They will not go undefeted and we may as well be the ones to break their string.
"We feel like we can't lose," Jones said. "We have a refuse-to-lose mentality." And THIS is why i am glad they won Sunday. Keep that attitude, sucka!
It seems every game they do what is needed to win, there is no crazy blow outs, just, ok guys, we need about 9 more points to win this game and they get the 9 points, It reminds of the Pats back in 03, it seemed like they could dominate every game, but they just get by and win, and win they did, The 4th quarter is where we need to be perfect and thats what we need to bury these Titans
They have squeaked by in 5 of their wins winning by 7 points are less. All of those teams were not as good as we are. If they beat us badly then it's the CS who is to blame. Why do you think so many people pick them to lose every week? Like I said they are not close to the dominant team the Pats were last year.
I don't know who is picking them to lose every week. Apparently they suck at picking games because lo-and behold they are still undefeated. They are averaging 24 points a game and only giving up 13. They are not just squeaking by.
Its going to come down to which Jets team shows up and in addition, which gameplan the CS develops. If they allow Collins all day to throw by dropping into that stupid assed prevent D, we'll lose. If they run Jones into the pile on 3rd and short everytime? We'll lose. If they use just a little imagination, only a little bit? We stand a chance. If they allow Brett to audible when the OC makes like an frightened armadillo, we stand a chance. The CS can't coach scared or be overly conservative. They can't be stupid either. They have to find the right balance of being cautious and ballsy. So far this year, they've been either/or. Now's the time for Mangini and Co. to show us what they got. We damned near gave NE the game. We can't do that anymore period.
I agree with you wholeheartedly. If they go consevative on D like they did the entire second half of the Pats game, Collins will sit back in the pocket and pick them apart. Let's just hope Mangini and crew are feeling ballsy on Sunday. Can you say, "safety blitz"?
