Through week 11 (Don't worry, the Bills-Browns game tonight will have no effect on this, I promise) the Jets and Cardinals are tied with 239 points scored, making them tied for 2nd in the NFL in scoring. (28.9 points per game - The Giants are first at 29.2 points per game). This is one of those stats that always ends up being a good indicator of a teams success. I challenge anyone to find an example of a team that led the NFL in scoring this late in the season and didn't go on to at least make the playoffs (and probably win their respective division, as well). By the way, this stat also shows that scoring in football is a TEAM statistic AND NOT purely an offensive one. (i.e. defensive and special teams touchdowns count just as much as offensive touchdowns do. Also, Offensive touchdowns set up by turnovers and a short field count just as much as 80 yard TD passes/runs/drives)
It could have been said that the Card and Rams games inflate that number, but the Jets have not put up 21+ pts in only 3 games this year. Two of them were losses. This team can score points. And the defense can score too. Its good that they can do that, because they can run with the better teams.
Well the offense has been hot as of late. TJ found his legs, Favre is getting comfortable as is the O-Line. It's a bit surprising to see the Jets that high, but it's great to see.
I'd love to find a site where I can find offensive points and defensive points broken out. Not to mention points scored off of turnovers.
According to NFL.com we have 289 points scored; tied for second in NFL. Pretty impressive if you ask me.
what will that do for you, show that we have not scored that much? yes we have some defensive touchdowns and special team touchdowns they all count though ok.
Coming this Sunday the Jets and the second best scoring offense face the Titans with the best scoring defense. Should be a great clash.
The Jets are NOT the 2nd highest (or "best") scoring OFFENSE . . . they are, however, the 2nd highest (or "best") scorig team, OVERALL. (In other words, including defensive and Speacial teams touchdowns. This was kind of the whole point of me starting the thread - to show that scoring is a TEAM stat, not just an offensive one. Defensive and Special teams TDs count just as much as offensive TDs do)
I know of no easy way to get scoring totals after only 10 games, but the Colts in 2001 led the league in scoring and finished 6-10. The Chiefs in 2002 led the league in scoring and finished 8-8 and out of the playoffs. The Chiefs finished second in the NFL in scoring in 2004 and finished 7-9.
Yeah i saw those examples, however, if you look at them WITHIN THE CONTEXT of the history of the league as a whole, you will see that they are the exceptions to the rule.
I still don't understand how Warner can be so good some years and be a backup other years. He's outplaying Favre this year. And Pennington. He's even better than Matt Cassel.
ND, points are points ,doesn't matter how you get 'em. Plus no one else has done to Arizona what the Jets did. The Giants have had some laughers too, inflating their numbers.
I agree that while this is a good stat to look at, you need to look at the schedule to determine the "laughers." The Giants have had some, Seattle and St. Louis come to mind, and the Jets have as well (the routes of Arizona and the reaffirmation of St. Louis as a balls team). The Giants also lead the league in scoring differentials though, and this isn't something you can just look away from. This shows you are putting up a lot of points AND not letting many get scored. The Giants probably lose that stat as they are playing the toughest remaining schedule in the league, but it's nice to see for now. The Jets, outside of a few games, don't have the roughest remaining schedule and could go to the top of that list if they keep playing well.
I hate to say it, but it almost seems like Warner only does good when he's injury free and has incredible talent at wr (see this year, somewhat last year, and his years with the rams). Unlike Favre who can play well with both great and average wr's , and still play pretty decently when hurt as well, and also has never had to be a backup.
That's exactly how Warner is, his only good seasons have come when he was been healthy for the whole year and when he has talented skill players around him. Favre has put up great numbers with much less and of course has never missed a start.
