Why is this surprising? The Rams dumped two time MVP (now on his way to three?) Warner for Bulger. The Packers dumped three time MVP (coming off a season he was runner up for his fourth MVP) & ironman Favre for a guy who had never started and had 59 career attempts and had been injured in every other game he played in. Stranger things have happened.
obviously, the Brady and Jets scenerio is never going to happen- so be it. But something to really think about, and the guys at the bar talked about how Mortensen mentioned it, is next year when Cassell is a free agent, that the Jets might go after him. I personally don't know how I'd feel about that, I mean hes looked pretty good and tore us up last week. But at the same time it helps having a stellar O-line, and perhaps the best WR ever to play to throw to. But with the Jets/Pats history, it certainly would be a compelling story. Farve retires- Brady returns, and Cassell bolts New England for the Jets! Tom Brady = Bill Belicheck, the controversial, yet outstanding status quo. Matt Cassell = Eric Mangini, the young upstart question mark looking to take down their mentor. Can you imagine how pissed off Belicheck would be if he gets beat by a Matt Cassell-led New York Jets??? HAHA something to think about anyway
If Matt Cassell played for the Jets, we would ALL be crying for Chad Pennington. And we would all be right. Cassell sucks. He can't make big time throws and he runs when he is indecisive. He will take a big hit one day while scrambling and he will be through. If you watched both Jets/PAts games, you saw him miss Moss numerous times downfield. He made 1 big throw and Moss bailed him out on that one.
Idk man, I saw him miss Moss once deep on a bad throw thursday. I also saw him throw for 400 yards, put the team on his shoulders for an entire half when they had NO running game, and single-handedly drive them down the field with a minute left and no timeouts to tie the game. I don't really remember Chad ever doing that. Our first matchup he didnt do anything spectacular, but it also was his first start ever. And as far as running when hes "indecisive," we all saw how that went, he gashed us with a few big gainers and first down pickups. He was their leading rusher and really kept them in the game with his legs- hmmmm. Honestly, I see what you're saying a little bit, and I don't love Cassell that much - but its easy to say hes a bum just because hes not Tom Brady. He might actually be pretty good.
I agree. Dumping Pennington for Favre, then turning around and picking up Cassel, would be ... bizarre. The only thing that would make it make sense is if age is a factor (that same only thing that could make the Rodgers-for-Favre switch make sense)
Re: Brady to Jets The only way New England would trade Brady and keep Cassel would be if Ted Thompson became the Patriots GM.
If NE does not make the playoffs or loses in the 1st round, Brady will be no longer an issue, NE will be salivating for Brady's return. If by some miracle (it would be a miracle) that NE and Cassel go on to win the SB this year; then there is a nice problem to have - 2 SB winning QB's on your team; at that point something would have to give and a decision would have to be made. Personally, form my observation, unless Brady's injury does not allow him to be Brady anymore, Brady will always be better than Cassel.
Put it like this once upon a time Joe Montana was king of san fran and was dumped for steve young. Its just bound to happen one day specially since the pats have gotten more then the value of tom bradys selection in the 5th or 6th round = 3 superbowls 4 appearances with a shit load of afc championship appearances. The nfl is always looking for the next best thing. Just say he was release or traded and we didn't make a move or express interest would be stupid. Would you have ever considered TY Law ever being a Jet none the less twice in a career. Money Talks bullshit walks. Players are trained to hate there rivals but money succeeds all emotions in the end he would have to be a fool to turn down a deal.
If the Niners would have kept Montana they might have won two or three more superbowls. It will happen one day but that day is not now.
If the Jets signed Brady this Board would be split into the "Praise Brady" group, the "Why Didn't We Try Harder and Talk Brett Favre Out of Retirement--I hate Tom Brady" crew, and the "SB win or not, I Still Miss Chad" groupies. At that point, there will never...for never ever?...FOR NEVER, EVER...be a dull moment on TGG.
Letting the best player the franchise has ever had leave for a flash in the pan backup would be a great move.
I don't have the detais but I would think they gave Brady enough bonus money to make getting rid of him impossible cap wise...I am sure that is just stupid fans talking again.
They could but then they would have to pay him the average of the top 5 QBs in the league. I don't think they can afford paying two QBs that much money.
unless Brady's rehab somehow takes a turn for the worst....then i can see the use of the "franchise tag" being justified here.
how about a 3 yr deal paying him as the top backup in the league? That would make sense. The Pats are going to need the insurance with Brady's knee.
Unless Cassel wants to start somewhere....and there will be a handful of teams looking for his services (Minny? Det?)
