hopefully vernon has a sophmore breakout like these fine pass rushers http://sports.espn.go.com/espnmag/story?id=3672569
funny a thread about how he may come around gets zero attention in the board, if this thread was titled gholston sucks it would have at least a page worth of replies by now. i think this part speaks to what gholston is going through the most right now. "I think pass rushers are like running backs in that if they have the raw ability, teams will get them in the lineup as soon as possible," says Joyner. "One reason they often don't make the jump in year one is that they have been used to facing lesser physical talents in college. In that environment they don't have to go full speed on every play to get top-level production, but you can't get by like that in the NFL."
Let's hope this article has atleast a smidgeon of truth to it; Gholston has been more dissapointing than Schottenheimer's gameplans.
I'm not sure I feel like researching the validity of every player they talk about, but Abraham was doing great as an outside pass-rusher in his rookie year until he got a sports hernia. He only played in 6 games.
True. But KC Joyner is pretty credible; if anything, he usually supports his claims with factual evidence. As the article indicates, he's essentially a football scientist. But you're right about Abe.
Fuck all these lame articles. We all watch the dam games every week. We can judge for ourselves when or if he is getting better or if he will ever be a relevant player.
Well, this is more about predicting based on history, stats, etc. Sure, we can judge with our own eyes, but this may provide some insight to those who want to call him a bust already.
Only if you don't understand a thing about football... ...and I just made a post in a similar vein as this article in one of those fool Gholston sux threads.
Abraham was purely a pass rush WLB his senior season in college. Contrary to popular belief, he was a DE for most of his college career, and converted to rush LB for his senior season. From that standpoint, he really didn't have to learn a new position in the NFL his first season because he almost exclusively played 3rd downs and only rushed the passer. He looked absolutely dominant as a rookie until he got hurt 6 games into the season. It was clear from the beginning he had "it". Gholston right now is not even in the same league. A top-10 pick that has not made a contribution after 7 games, without any serious injuries as an explanation, is a valid concern IMO.
Well, so far the indications are that he sucks. For one who had no interest in drafting him (I saw him as Robertson II), I could care less that someone thinks the #6 pick in the draft might be good in a year or two.
Anyone who thinks gholston is a bust is a foul. We knew he was raw going out of the draft. It takes a 2-3 years to judge a player
I was going to make the same statement - you judge an NFL player after 3 years. NFL games are a completely different pace than college games, the competition is much better and everyone is supremely talented. Add a position change to that and it is near impossible to have an impact in your first NFL season. Give him some time.
dont have enough time on here for my own post. Trying to be a 1/2 full jet fans. I would like everyone in here to tell me honestly at 1-2 with az, cincy, oak and kc coming did you expect bettter then 3-1 - I doubt it we hoped for it but doubted it- we just played a 1/4 of season 750 ball and we are all jumping off bridges. The league today- IE giants you just don't beat all the bad teams.
'in a way teams can almost view playing that many bad teams in a row is a bad break how many 4 game winning streaks have taken place this year. giants, tennessee, carolina
I like your analysis re the difference in talent and competition. Former number pick overall Steve Entmann (Colts) was once asked by a college football player what he (Steve) thought the biggest difference was between college and pro football. Entmann said "Think of the very best guy you EVER played against in your 4 years of college football. Well, in the pros there are 11 of "those guys" on the other side of the ball every week."
Couldn't agree more. Look at Brick for example; I don't think too many people were calling him a bust after year 1 because they knew it would take time. I also think he will continue to get much better also. And you noting the position change makes it easy not to jump the gun on calling Gholston a bust.
