Yeah, Lou Holtz and Charley Winner didn't do him any favors, either. Maybe if he had a decent team he wouldn't have been so bad, but like I said, Favre right now is reminding me of that. You see who he is and expect greatness and he keep forcing bad throws.
That Boomer was prone to bone-headed INTs are not a part of this discussion. The fact of the matter is, Brett IS throwing stupid prayer type of passes way too often. I don't quite think Brett is that stupid in any way, but if he is struggling to get down the nuances of the offensive gameplans (and plays as well) why don't you simplify the offense? We need Favre at his best, not worst. No? Believe it or not, Schotty might have been calling lights out - it might be just that Favre couldn't execute it. Whatever the case, don't you think you should adapt to the strength of the player, instead of forcing the player into the system? It's the players that execute in the pitch on every Sunday after all.
I think they have taken away a lot of the pre snap shifting and things to adapt it to Favre, at least it looks that way. Regarding Boomer, if anything his own playing history lends more credibility to his comments, not less. If anyone can relate to where Favre is at it's him, how many ex-MVPs have come to the Jets late in their careers to play QB? Boomer and Favre, that's it.
Namath did throw a lot of picks and you've hit on the reasons, but defenses were very different back then, mainly man to man. Namath's problem later in his career was that teams started playing more zone and he simply wasn't used to it. Hence he threw a lot more interceptions. And of course, all that drinking to help him deal with the pain didn't help either. Namath and Mantle are my favorite athletes of all time. It's a shame they both got messed up by injuries at a time when the technology we have today just wasn't there.
Charley Winner was Weeb's son-in-law and was a terrible coach as was Holtz, whose claim to fame was making the team sing the national anthem, were not in Kansas anymore Dorothy, were in the NFL, and then he quit after the 13th game that season....yuck!!!!
