1981 and 1982 teams...I don't bother separating them, maybe because the 82 season was abbreviated, maybe because it was just a beautiful era. The best thing about that team was you didn't mind when the offense left the field because the defense was even more exciting. I was at the 81 finale vs Packers. I was 20 years old and my aunt scored two tickets for my cousin and I, and we were stoked. Freezin' cold in the parking lot, but we hooked up with friendly tailgaters who were roasting a pig on a spit and drinking vodka and coke. Then the game started and the cold just energized you, it felt great. When the final gun sounded we went nuts, stormed the field as we always did anytime we got to go. I remember standing under the closed end goal post, shortly before it got pulled down. It was crazy, with all the pushing and shoving and I started to think I'd made a mistake. Suddenly, the "seas parted" and Abdul Salaam appeared directly in front of me, trying to get to the exit. That calmed the crowd down a little and I was able to get out of there. ------------------------------------------------- In terms of a TV game, I won't call it the absolute favorite, but I loved the start of the Parcells era in Seattle when we romped. Talk about getting your hopes up! John Hall hitting a 50 yard field goal, and the Jets going 5 wide on the opening drive and Chrebet making one of his trademark tumbling TD receptions! I've never felt more optimistic about the start of an era. Seems like a long time ago now.
I wish I had seen those teams of the 80s... My favorite had to be 98, and after the disappointing start to 99 I can only wonder what would've happened had they started Lucas earlier rather than that Mirer scrub. 99 was extremely disappointing, but considering what that team went through I was still proud of that team. I just wish Parcells gave us one more year.
Very few people who actually saw that team are regular posters on the internet, Champ. I still bet the '82 team would take them head to head!
What you posted is exactly why threads like this are VALUELESS since most of members NEVER saw 60s players play. As for 68 vs 82 nah IMHO the 68 team was better & remember I saw them both play
I was stationed out in Washington state at the time and scored tickets to that game. I remember going in thinking we were going to get our butts kicked. I also remember cheering as the Jets got a touchdown and making the little kid in front of me cry. Great times.
Great story, I loved that game. First time I ever saw the Jets make the playoffs. Green Bay had no chance that day, even with Lofton and Jefferson. Todd hit Walker for an early TD, I remember the Packers punting out of the closed end early and it either being blocked or the wind knocking the ball down. The Jets sacked Lynn Dickey about 8 or 9 times that day, it was an awesome game to watch. I'll never forget it. I was at the Colts game about a month earlier and the Jets dominated, 25-0, Freeman McNeil's first career 100 yard game, another 8 sacks for the NYSE. Your title does say "Favorite All-Time Jets Team". Did you think champ was going to come in with anything different to say? For a guy who claims to have seen more than everyone here, he offers the least insight of anyone here.
They werent great teams but the 88 and 89 teams. Those were the first teams I followed in my lifetime. We had a ton of offensive skill talent(KOB,McNeil,Toon,Walker, Shuler) unfortunately we had an underachieving O-line and an inconsistent defense. But those teams were always fun to watch and of course were my first memories of jets football.
Wow, is Champ the only poster who saw the Jets from their early days to now? That's pretty sweet. By the way, you're lucky you actually saw them win a SB. Bah.
There was another guy, Allentown Ernie, I think. He saw it too and wasn't nearly as bitter and narrow minded as champ.
Champ, what did you think of the 1920 Columbus Panhandles? Didn't see them play? You see, that's why your opinion is VALUELESS because you NEVER saw the old teams play so you can't possibly know anything about football.
My wife (who is not a sports fan at all!) met him at some sort of weekend getaway resort in Connecticut years ago. She mentioned that I was a huge Jets fan and he offered to have his picture taken with him. He was always one of my favorites (Leon W. reminds me of him) and he seems like a really super guy.
he really does, if my dad wasnt a huge jets fan i would have thought he was just a really nice guy... its nice to see a guy who a lot of jet fans liked is just a down to earth guy and really appreciative of the fans... thats a lot to say these days
