It amazes me how inconsistent this team is. I know some will point out that except for Arizona we really haven't had a great game, however, I felt like things were beginning to come together until this week. Is it the players, or the coaching? I can't help but think of a quote I believe was said by Bum Phillips regarding Bear Bryant. He said "That man could beat your team with his players, and then turn around and beat HIS team with YOUR players". What a great way to describe just how important coaching can be in this game. I still have faith that this can turn out to be a decent year, I just wonder how great this team could be with the right guy running the show.
I don't understand it either. It's like the Cardinals game never happened. We whoop their asses, then have another solid win against Cinci and now this bullshit against Oakland....82 points in 2 games, I thought the Jets were finally ready to take off. The we lose to the Raiders...in a really poorly played game. KC is a must win. Then Buffalo and NE will be the real test to see where we are going with this season.
The Jets will lose to KC unless Favre is allowed to air it out (which he hasn't be able to do since the Arizona game). And no, throwing 5 and 10 yards dink and dunks don't count as airing it out.
I linked videos in other threads, no need to do it again. You want to know why Favre was successful last season? It wasn't time in the pocket, that is for sure. It was because the offense was opened up for him. (and, he decided to trust more then just driver). He was making the same old Favre plays from the 90's that we haven't seen in years because the offense just opened up for him. Seriously, half his completed balls were 8+ yards, I believe. Thats a pretty astounding numbers (at least, it seemed that way watching him play). This season you can tell that it's safe passing offense. Sorry, ther eis nothign "safe" about #4. Let the man air it out. When your able to crack 6 yards a run against a bad team, why are you not EVER calling a PA Deep pass? I mean, christ, it would of been open ALL GAME LONG.
The win against Cincy wasn't solid, our O has played awful football the last 2 weeks while the D has been excellent. We had great field position all day against Cincy and couldn't take advantage, we only scored 13 in 5 qtrs against Oakland. You cannot keep playing bad football against bad teams or it will eventually bite you and as bad as oak is they are better than Cincy and we were on the road. We needed to play alot better but instead we played the a similar game on O. I could buy the excuses earely in the season about Favre and the O but he's been around long enough, the new faces on the OL have been around long enough- we SHOULD be alot better offensively right now.
This is proof of the "curse". No matter how many good players you bring in, even the legendary Favre. No players are good enough to raise the level of play to overcome the curse. The curse just keeps sucking them down. All is lost until the devil has final claim on Namath's soul.
The problem is we bring these guys in years after they have peaked. So the names sound good--Brett Favre, Boomer Esiason, Ronnie Lott, Art Monk, but that doesn't win you anything. The trick is getting guys on the way up and having them establish their greatness as Jets.
