JETS RAN SELVES OUT OF OT WIN By BRIAN COSTELLO BRETT FAVRELast updated: 5:59 am October 21, 2008 The TV showed Brett Favre sitting in the pocket untouched, rolling out, hitting the open receiver downfield for the score and then . . . oh wait, that's his Wrangler commercial, not the Jets game. Jets offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer doesn't call the plays when Favre is in his favorite blue jeans. No, in Oakland on Sunday the Jets got conservative in overtime and their offense stagnated, opening the door for the Raiders to steal a 16-13 victory that cold haunt Gang GreenNew York Jets . They won the toss to start the extra period, elected to receive, then fizzled. The Jets handed the ball off on the first two plays of each of their three overtime drives, and four of Favre's six throws in overtime came on third down. The offensive failure allowed the Raiders to kick a game-winning field goal on their third drive. Yesterday, Jets coach Eric Mangini bristled when asked about the play calling. "He threw the ball 38 times," Mangini snapped. "They're running for 7.2 yards a carry. The only touchdown we had in the game was eight out of nine runs. I feel comfortable with what we did in overtime." It is true that Thomas JonesThomas Jones had his best day as a Jet. He piled up 159 yards on the ground, and the Jets had 242 as a team. But the momentum gained at the end of the fourth quarter seemed to evaporate with the conservative overtime calls. Unfortunately for the Jets, the one time they did go downfield, tight end Chris BakerChris Baker fell and a possible game-winning score went down with him. Instead of the play-calling, Mangini pointed to his team's boneheaded mistakes as the reason they are 3-3 today and not 4-2. They had nine penalties and three turnovers in the game, playing a Raiders-like game. Mangini said he was happy with the way the Jets rallied in the fourth quarter and the way the defense stopped Oakland at the end of regulation and the beginning of overtime. "All those things are very positive things, but they can't be sandwiched in with nine penalties and three turnovers," he said. "It just makes it too difficult." The Jets realized they let one slip away against the lowly Raiders, who are more dysfunctional than the guests on the "Dr. Phil Show." "We had more than enough opportunities to go out there and win that game," linebacker Calvin Pace said. "To be a team that's spoken of [making] the playoffs and doing great things . . . somebody's got to go out there, step up and make the plays. Nobody really did." brian.costello@nypost.com
Again, the fact Mangini wants to blame player mistakes, over coaching blunders, just baffles me. The proof is in the pudding - your not willing to be aggressive and it's not only costing you games at this juncture, it's taking Brett Favre completely out of hte equation. I'll say it again, first play of OT was just prime for a PA deep to one of your two top WR's. Just primed. Instead, you ran it. All three possessions. First two plays. Gaining virtually no yards and forcing third and longs. Come now, were trying to win the game are we not? Your team had the momentum... your suppose to ride that and get aggressive.
True we had so many chances to fuckin win and we just couldnt do it... We gotta kill KC next week for justice.
A -3 turnover percentage is going to kill you no matter who is to blame. As for the coaching, I would say it was the overall gameplan as opposed to the gameday play calls. Even if we wont that game it OT, the team would still be in just as much trouble, we'd just have another W. Let's remember that the division leading Bills only beat that same team with a last second FG and game up more points than we did. The difference is that Buffalo's coaches know how to put their players in the right position to make the plays that will set up that FG.
Pure nonsense...if you watched the game on several occassions Favre looked and looked and waited and waited.....it wasnt the playcalling...our receivers did not get open!!!!!!
