    Brett Favre undecided on 2009

Brett Favre was asked about returning next season, and he said he won't make that decision until next year.

"We'll take it week to week," the Jets' quarterback said Wednesday. "At the end of the season, I'll take a look at ... I'll assess how I played this year and talk with the Jets and we'll see from there. I think it's way premature to even think about next season."

Favre, who turned 39 last Friday, said he was "really excited" about playing for the Jets. He already has 13 touchdown passes and one baby named after him - Zack Brett Mangini, born on Favre's birthday.

Favre is signed through 2010. The Jets inherited his contract from the Packers.

GETTING PICKY: S Kerry Rhodes is itching for an interception. He's gone eight straight games without a pick, dating to last season. He senses that quarterbacks are reluctant to throw deep.

"They're not really challenging me, per se, back there," said Rhodes, who had four interceptions in 2006 and five in 2007.

If teams are afraid to throw deep because of Rhodes' big-play prowess, it should help the defense. But, without gaudy stats, it's tough to make the Pro Bowl.

"Maybe it (the Pro Bowl) will come from the respect factor," he said, crossing his fingers. Rhodes is looking for his first Pro Bowl selection. He has a big fan in Patriots coach Bill Belichick. After the Week 2 loss to the Patriots, "He told me I'm the best he's played. It's good to hear that."

MILLER TIME: Could this be Justin Miller's time? Miller, inactive the first five games, practiced full Wednesday for the first time since the preseason. He dislocated a toe in the third preseason game and suffered undisclosed setbacks in limited practice, turning a one- to two-week injury into a lengthy period on the sideline.

In the meantime, Miller lost his starting cornerback job to rookie Dwight Lowery. It'll be interesting to see how - or if - Eric Mangini integrates Miller into the secondary.

It appears that S Abram Elam, who started last week for the suspended Eric Smith, will return to a reserve role.

Are you kidding me? Smith is back as the starter? I thought Elam played better in his 1 game than Smith has all year; or, at least, I didn't see Elam trip over the goal line.

Both Elam and Barrett did better jobs that Smith. I don't know what they see in him.

Smith is a Mangini favorite, so he'll start.

why don't they try and convert justin miller to a safety. guy hits like a truck. has good speed. just can't handle covering a guy off the line, so maybe he'd be better in open spaces.

I'm sure they've tried him at safety in practice, there was an article a while back where they said they try all of the corners at safety to make them understand the position's responsibilities, just like they use Rhodes at both safety positions on different occasions.

Because he sucks and gets to continue to play even though his challengers have both performed far better in the past.

Press Conferences. Mangini raves about his intelligence and work ethic, but Smith has been a liability. He fits the mold of the Mangini guy, and since there isn't much difference in talent at the other safety spot he gets the starts.

I've seen Elam and Barrett makes less mistakes over the course of this season.

I've seen them make less mistakes in a whole season than Smith makes in a game.

To me, this is bad coaching. Plain and simple.

I understand no one wants to make a decision to bench someone because of injury/suspension/etc; when that guy comes back, it should be his job and his to lose.

However, it's all the same, isn't it. If you just think of it as Smith was benched for a game to see if someone could outperform him - which damn well happened - then it's not like he's screwed over.

Whatever happened to the best players will play? I fully support Mangini, but this is his boneheaded stubbornness, and I'm really hoping it doesn't cost us a win.

Well, the Raiders aren't bombing the ball anytime soon, so his speed won't be an issue.

He's a sloppy tackler who has trouble with his reads when he is covering the man he is assigned to. Can you imagine what he'd be like at safety when he had to determine who he was covering and where based on who took which route across the defense? Not to mention having him be the last line of defense with those tackling skills?

Miller is a good return man, he has no other NFL caliber skills.

What did Elam do that was so good against the Bengals? I saw him get toasted because he was way out of position on one play but Fitzpatrick sucks and missed the bomb. If that were a good pass no one would be saying this.

Everyone's calling E. Smith the coach's pet, but last year he seemed to be the whipping boy. He was publicly criticized and benched for missing a tackle on a freak play where two DBs ran into each other. Elam got his job and kept it no matter how poorly he played.

The fact that the coach "raves" about someone in a press conference doesn't make the player his "pet". Most coaches will be positive about their players. I've seen both play in person and at camp and I will tell you that Elam has done nothing to distinguish himself. I don't find either to be a great safety but I think that you've read too much into this.

No one has more data at their fingertips to make the decision on who starts than the coaching staff. To my eye, the difference between these two players is not as big as you make it out to be. I certainly don't think that this is such a huge indictment. At least Eric Smith has one big hit (fined or not) to show. What did Elam do?

Elam is also a liability, but you said it, Smith and Elam aren't much different in terms of talent. Every time I hear Elam's name all I can picture in my mind is him laying out Revis to let Lee Evans strut into the endzone. I'm like 93% sure Revis would have had that interception and I won't forgive that cumbucket until he makes a play with the game on the line in penance for the one he fucked up. He's been given more than enough time to make amends; I say give Smith the start.
