I doubt Jessica would want you anyway, Brett - especially with that ugly mug in your avatar . Not to disparage the people in this thread (including me) I agree this thread is kind of pointless. Most (not all) of the big Favre fans will say that the Jets would be 1-4, Conversely most of the pro-Pennington crowd (he obviously has his fans as well) think that the Jets would be 3-2 at the worst - and possibly 4-1. You can go back and forth and the same arguements that have been made a gazillion times over will be repeated. To think that anybody "knows" what would have happened is ridiculous. To say that this guy couldn't have thrown this pass in that circumstance is BS IMHO. It doesn't matter. That circumstance wouldn't have even been that circumstance with a differenct QB. I am dubious of anybody's ability to make logical ascertions about what would have happened when the Jets and Dolphins have actually shown an amazing disparity in their results so far (Jets beat Miami and Cards, lose to SD and Pats - Miami loses to Jets and Card, beat SD and Pats). I would imagine that most NY Jets and Miami fans are happy who they have at QB now vs. who they had at the beginning of training camp. What I find funny is that all of the things I hear about Favre (team guy, knows the game, makes players around him better, etc.) are the exact things that most of the Miami fans are saying in their groups about Penningtion (excluding the strong arm arguement of course). I'm not saying that they are not true about Favre - I'm just saying that a lot of this stuff is based on your perspective. Even though I do find this thread pointless (hey this whole forum is for speculation anyway) I will say that the Jets would be 3-2 with Pennington. I believe, that both QB's have played decently well so far this year given their circumstances. There are so many things out of control of the QB anyway. Just take a look at the Miami / Texas game and the Jets / NE game. If not for the defense giving up a last second TD, Pennington would have notched up a come from behind victory (something that a lot of people have said that he can't do). If the Jets had been able to make one defensive stop in the fourth against the Pats then their is a decent chance that Favre leads the team to a game-winning drive.
I agree with your first point, but totally disagree with your second. This year's Jets are a totally different team fropm last year. If you are going to play the what-if game then why not take what Pennington is doing this year? His numbers are actually very similar to the numbers that Favre has put up (except TD's). Pennington actually has a higher YPA than Favre and Favre has a higher completion percentage than Chad.
Favre would'nt have thrown that TD after the 2 waived TD either had it not been for the penalty giving the Jets a first and 10 around the 15. BF is better than CP by far, but my point is, CP is a good QB and can be very good and efficient with supporting cast. See the Fins...
You're right. We'd be 3-2 with or without Chad right now, though we might have had a better chance in the New England game, that one is hard to tell. Week one we probably win either way. Week two is just hard to tell. Week three we would have gotten killed either way. Week four could have been a bigger struggle with Chad possibly not being able to convert in the red zone. Week five, we win either way, but Chad might have led us to a bigger win not turning the ball over. As I posted yesterday, the Favre difference will come later in the year, when he's acclimated and playing against good teams that Chad struggles against. I'm 100% in favor of getting Favre and getting rid of Chad, but I fully understand we'd probably be fine either way through the first five games. The difference is that now we are a 3-2 team with the potential to be one of the best teams in the AFC. With Chad, we'd be a 3-2 team, but one whose upside was limited because our offense would still struggle against good teams.
I still don't see how we'd be a lock at 3-2 with Chad. Maybe if he played his best football but it's not like he's never had bad games before
The first game at Miami would have been a cakewalk for us with McCown at QB for Miami and Chad at QB for us. Likewise, this last game was interesting only because of Favre's turnovers. No turnovers and it's a laugher. So Favre is at least making things interesting.
I know this is from page one but... Have you watched Miami? As effecient as Chad has been, Miami absolutely does not win a single game this season without the running ability, and trickory be ran to, Ronnie Brown. Ronnie Brown is winning those football games, all Pennington has to do is not LOSE games. That's a far easier task then have to WIN them. Favre, while only appearing to have one standout performance.... is getting points on the board. Sure, TJ had 3 td's last week... but only 68 yards rushing. If Favre wasn't tossing the rock and getting inside the redzone, those TD's wont happen. I doubt Chad is 3-2 with this team, because the jets don't have a player even remotely close to ROnnie Brown, nor do they have a scheme in qhich Ronnie Brown would work. Just saying, the offense has been putting points on the board, and it is no coincidence that Favre just happens to be the QB when this happens. You need to look beyond the numbers: The jets offense is explosive, and driving down the field a lot in every game, no matter the opponent. That is not going to happen with Pennington, because he doesn't bring that threat, adn the ground game is not good enough to make up for it like it is in Miami.
Yeah, Chad's got one of the best RB's in the AFC and then a good back-up to boot in Miami. None of the crap they're pulling works here where guys get <4 ypc. With Chad, we wouldn't be 0-5, but to think that he could lead this team into the redzone and then effectively use our speedy WRs is borderline delusional. His 52 yarder was actually a 35 yard throw, and his 80 yarder was a screen play. Maybe the playcalling (Sparano thru Parcells realizes Chad's weaknesses and strays away from them) and the WRs aren't too bad down there?
ESPN'S 2008 QUARTERBACK RATING 1. Philip Rivers, SD 109.4 2. Drew Brees, NO 105 3. Tony Romo, DAL 103.5 4. Brett Favre, NYJ 103 5. Kurt Warner, ARI 102.8 'NUFF SAID
With the highest completion rate in the league and top 5 QB rating, Favre makes a better Chadwick than Chad does. With Penny, we'd probably beat Miami and Cinci and that's it. With Clemens, who knows. I think 3-2 is possible.. and people would still be calling for his head.
After rewatching the game I just want to add that the notion that "Favre kept the Bengals in the game" is silly. Both drives where he threw the INT's we started somewhere around our own 20 and drove the ball all the way down the field with mostly passes before throwing the INT's. If the INT's came on drives where the defense or special teams had set us up with great field position like they did for most of the game I could see that having some truth, but they didn't.
yeah this seem interesting, i wanna try... what if we had LT as our running back instead of TJ? what if we had a better kicker? what if you werent a jets fan? bleh, seriously though...#4 has made an impact, no doubt about it, but i think the biggest impacts have been made by #'s 77 and 97 , i think without them 2 we could easily be 1-4 or 2-3 at best right now.
Yeah but the Jets never had a chance at LT. The rest of your comparisons don't really make sense either. This team could've easily been without #4 this season so this "what if" (as big as it is) still makes sense.
What if BB stayed in NY and drafted Brady? What if they took Ed Reed and then Rhodes? What if they traded up and got Matt Ryan to backup Brady as his heir apparent? What if the Jets didn't win SB III? What if they took Warren Sapp? What if this team had the West Side Stadium? What if...... FUCK HINDSIGHT.
How is that "'nuff said"? Brett has played ONE good game! I don't care what his rating is. I guess you were really impressed w/ his garbage time TDs against SD a few weeks back.
Not that this stat even matters because Miami is running for their TDs, which we couldn't do for Chad or Clemens last year, but I don't think it is accurate. Only the first TD he threw on Sunday was a trick play. The second one was a normal pass to the FB who broke a long run, the two against us were out of a normal set. I'm pretty sure the other one (vs SD) was too but I don't recall it right now. Either way, this stat is wrong, another case of you seeing only what you want to see.
6 of Miami's 14 TD's have come out of the Wildcat formation. Miami ran a pro set against the Jets and Chad down the stretch with a chance to win threw 2 straight balls into Jet defenders hands. That's a fact.
He also threw two TDs against us, that's a fact. Miami used the Wildcat 11 times in the Sad Diego win while Chad threw 29 times, that's a fact. Six out of 14 TDs is less than half, that's a fact.
